  1. Well, my Thai wife and I are pregnant. Due in July 2009. We are currently in San Francisco and will travel to Bangkok in May to finish out her trimester there. We think we may give birth at Thai Nakarin Hospital in Bangkok. We have a home in Bangplee, but will likely rent a serviced apartment near the hospital.

We then will return to USA in October (I need to return to work, though we are building a house in Khao Lak).

    SO>>>>>>>> :)

We hope you will have advice on what to expect regarding healthcare, prenatal care, what to bring with us that we can't find in Thailand, stroller or NO stroller, infant formula from US...and just about anything you can think of.

We are quite excited (our first baby!) and like all parents, hope for the best.

Please fill this topic with anything that might help...and even just a 'hello' would be great!

    Thank you!

    John and Roong

Go to Bumrungrad ... its the best hospital in Asia Pacific... have been there and wouldnt go anywhere else, service 100/100, Doctors 200/100, all up best I have ever seen better than anything in Singapore or Australia (I am Australian) .....Good Luck.....

Developer's throat slit over B2m debt

    Published: 13/05/2009 at 12:00 AM

    Newspaper section: News

A Thai-Indian property developer has died after his throat was slit when a man raided his office in Sukhumvit Soi 13, police say.

The man, who was captured by a security guard yesterday after the killing, claimed he was owed money by Anand Singjirakul and acted alone.

Mr Anand, 38, the owner of a company involved in luxury housing projects in Sukhumvit and Thong Lor, suffered deep cuts to his neck.

Police claimed Wanchai Jete, 44, told them Mr Anand owed him 2 million baht for a job he was hired to do.

But police and Mr Anand's relatives rejected the confession.

Two female office workers were injured in the attack on the ninth floor of the Sukhumvit Suite Building. They were treated at nearby hospitals.

Witness Pinkaew Pratan, a cleaner, said she saw Mr Wanchai near Mr Anand's office. He asked her where the toilet was.

When she heard Mr Anand had been assaulted, she screamed for help from security guards who grabbed Mr Wanchai after he ran down a fire escape. Police alleged he was found with a 38-calibre pistol and a short knife.

At Lumpini police station, Mr Wanchai admitted he killed Mr Anand over a 2 million baht debt for agarwood from the North. He had to borrow money to buy the wood, but Mr Anand refused to pay him back.

Police claimed he said he only wanted to threaten Mr Anand with a pistol and a knife, but killed him when he resisted.

Lumpini police chief Somprasong Yentuam said officers did not believe Mr Wanchai's confession that he acted alone as his mobile phone received a short message asking: "Is the job done?"

He believed other people were involved as it concerned a lot of money.

Relatives of Mr Anand also rejected the confession. They believe his death may be associated with his property projects at the beach resort of Khao Lak in Phangnga province, a family source said.

  5. A 'wye' is Thai and we don't do that in England. We shake hands. In Thailand I wye people, in England i shake hands. Respect other people's culture. No player in the premier league salutes the chairman on the football pitch before a game. Whether it be by 'wying' or dancing a jig. (unless you feel the need to do so out of respect)

You're 100% right - Wying is just like shaking hands or any other type of greeting. But at the end of the day, it's a mark of respect, and if you've never been to Thailand it would be completely alien to you.

    NOT WYE is a Wai

  6. Phuket Film Festival cancelled

PHUKET: -- Phuket Film Festival scheduled from June 4 to 11 will be cancelled.

The festival organiser sends press release to call off the festival on Wednesday. They fear that the tight security led to the government Asean Summit in Phuket might discourage filmmakers and film lovers to participate in the film event.

Despite the Asean summit being postponed to October, next month's Phuket Film Festival will still be cancelled.

Tight Security.... is that the same tight security they had at Pattaya...... sure.......

  7. The following 'Letter to the Editor' was in Nation newspaper, April 30:

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

An Indian traveller was detained in Bangkok for [allegedly] stealing a box of cigarettes from a duty-free shop at Bangkok International Airport. He had paid for chocolates and a carton of cigarettes. The cashier put a packet of cigarettes into his bag and he thought it was a free pack. He was arrested for shoplifting and the Thai police extortion price was Bt30,000 for his release. He spent two nights in jail and paid Bt500 for an air-conditioned cell, Bt200-300 for each visitor, and Bt11,000 for his final release. The police shared the money in front of his eyes. On top of that, he was charged in court and fined Bt2,000 by the magistrate and handcuffed and escorted to his plane. His passport was stamped "Thief". While in jail, his relatives requested help from the Indian Embassy but were told the embassy was unable to assist.

The man shared a cell with a Singaporean on the first night, who paid Bt60,000 for his release. On the second night there was a Malaysian national who paid Bt70,000. Many Asians are victimized similarly daily, and letters and phone calls to the Thai authorities are ignored. This was not in a shop in downtown Bangkok but in a duty-free shop at Bangkok's international airport. Be warned.

Welcome to Thailand, I am sure the Chief of Police is making his cut too, as well as the politicians......

  8. A lot of very negative replies here.

I think that this is a great idea & should be encouraged. The free flow of capital in global markets is of paramount importance in todays economic climate & the redistribution of wealth from the richer nations to the poorer is vital for social equality in the modern world.

Besides, you are going to make some lucky lady very, very happy. :D

The important thing is to have an exit strategy & be prepared to implement it as soon as your lady friend takes possession of her prize.

Maintain your dignity at all times.

Return to TV for sympathy. :)

Hey your advice is sound......the exit strategy is when this guy gets thrown off a building and is the next statistic... sorry to say all the negative guys here are 100% right DONT DO IT !!!!

  9. Any members seen anything about their return to Thailand?

I noticed that a decision on Pojamans appeal is due within this or next week.

she wasnt charged, who cares where she is, she has nothing to dso with Thaksin, they are divorced....leave them alone.....

  10. POLITICAL RECONCILIATION

    PM open to amnesty idea

    By The Nation

    Published on April 20, 2009

Abhisit, however, rules out pardon for those involved in criminal acts

The government will push for political reform as part of the healing process following the recent political mayhem, although any amnesty would only extend to political offences and not criminal violations for provoking uprisings, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday.

"I remain open-minded about amnesty for political wrongdoing based on what many say are unfair laws, but will definitely draw the line on criminal violations, such as inciting riots," he said.

All political parties have been asked to submit their reports within two weeks outlining issues to be covered in the charter rewrite, he said.

Politicians of all stripes should work together to improve the political system instead of casting suspicion on one another, he said.

Before the turmoil, the government tried but made no headway in launching the reform process because opposition lawmakers were doubtful about the political neutrality in selecting the charter writers, he said.

All stakeholders were promised a say in the reform process, he said.

The coalition partners have also been applying pressure on the Abhisit government to embark on amnesty legislation and political reform in order to solidify political stability and prepare for a fresh general election later this year.

This came out of a meeting between Abhisit and key coalition partners at the home of Niphon Phromphan, the secretary to the prime minister.

Spurred into action by the political turmoil, the coalition partners would like the government to work on a pardon for politicians banned by the Constitution Court after their parties were found to have been involved in election fraud.

The meeting agreed that all parties should try to keep the government moving so that the fiscal budget could be passed before any new election is called later this year, probably in September.

Direk Thungphang, a senator from Nonthaburi, said the Senate would convene today to discuss how to end the political impasse and ways to reform the Constitution, which is the root cause of the current crisis.

"We have sent a message to the prime minister that he should not be stubborn in his resolve to tackle political instability. He should aim at rewriting the Constitution,'' he said.

Asean secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan also called on the Abhisit government to accelerate the reconciliation process so that Thailand could successfully host the Asean Summit.

Never before has the Asean Summit with dialogue partners been postponed for political reasons, he said.

The Thai government must invite the ambassadors of the 15 member countries of Asean and its dialogue partners to consult on the new date for the summit, which had to be postponed from the week before due to the red-shirt protests.

Meanwhile, Sondhi Limthong-kul, the target of an assassination attempt last Friday, has been recovering satisfactorily and has been moved out of the ICU unit at Chulalongkorn Hospital.

    - THE NATION -

Of course Abhisit rues out a Pardon, he doesnt have the "Gahonnas" to Charge anyone... Looof at The airport Fiasco, the ASEAN SUMMIT....... what a bozo...

  11. Was shopping yesterday at Chatuchak market and was approached by a 25 - 35 year old white male(eastern european), he was wearing a a large sun hat like indiana jones style, shorts, t shirts and carrying a rucksack.

This was outside where the Banks /Toilets/Admin offices are.

He asked me if i am European too which i replied yes English and he then rattled off a long story about just arrived in BKK from Koh Samui and was trying to get cash from the ATM with his HSBC card which has been locked because of it being use in BKK - he has spoke to HSBC and they confirmed this but couldn't unlock it till Monday and all he had was his Czech passport and 2 notes of Czech money (passport / HSBC card / passport) are all in his hand to confirm each part of the story. Two Czech notes think they were a 100 and a 50 or 1000 and 5000 not sure as didn't want to touch them to extend the conversation.

Then the hit happens "They will not change my Czech money in the Bank its like they have never seen it before and it doesn't exist, its worth about £50 can you give me the Baht equalivent and you can change this when you get home"

At this point i said "sorry I live here and will not be going home for a long time -best you go to Khao Sarn road and i'm sure you can get help there"

Then i walked off - he wasn't there when i walked back through 30 minutes later.

I don't know if it's a new scam is starting in JJ or if it was genuine but if any of you are hit upon like this then its a new scam and you have been warned.

if its genuine I hope the dude is okay.

GOOD CALL>>>>> Tell the bozo to change them at a money changer or a Bank....

  12. I've read on the papers that lately has been some troubles in thailand... Unfortuantely news were pretty generic so I don't know for sure why people are protesting and what will happen, but I read that many riots and shootings were involved...

I'm coming this august to train in Muay Thai but I'm worried about the bangkok airport being blocked again or me getting shot by cops/demostrants, since our local embassy forbid to travel to thailand for now....

Do you think that my embassy concerns are founded, or shall I come to thailand without problem?

Its ok now but that may change in the future.... and very like it will......

  13. Well it would seem to me what with all the political problems at the moment i.e. reds yellows blues etc.The eye is off the ball where the economy is concerned. So time to devalue the Baht say 30% and this should give the economy a needed boost.

This would give the Tourism industry a well needed boost as the thought of a cheaper holiday would sway many away from worrying about the possible dangers of comming here.it would also give exports a well needed boost making exports cheaper from a overseas buyers point of view..

Ok imports would be more expensive but these are not always the average man in the streets purchase anyway.Yes I know fuel would be more expensive but this would surely be outweighed by the positives.

The downturn is hitting Thailand hard and will hit harder in the comming months so surely its better to act now and at least have some forign currency comming in?

    Your thoughts TV.

I am surprised Abhisit hasnt started printing more money ! along with all te other great ideas he has..........

  14. I wonder if the airline is safe. Moral must be at an all time low with change of board, political intervention and share price at an all time low. Also, bonuses smallest in living memory according to pilots and crew, and for many non-existent.

Airline's financial situation is precarious with the airline having fixed prices for fuel at more than US$100 per barrel for a year. Govt. had to help extend debt for the company.

Recruitment halted. Benefits taken for granted are being stopped, such as cheap passage for family and insurance schemes. Thai is also falling behind on its pay structure going from one of the best paid in the region to the worst.

Most maintenance is done in open air hangers, and this heat can't be good for the workers.

THAI Airways MUST be going broke, posting a 30 BILLION Baht Loss.... god how do you have a successful small company in Thailand......... Start out with Thai Airways HAHAHA

  15. She either loves you too much or doesn't trust you out and about......

Mine won't ride with me any more so I don't have that problem. She got tired of me ignoring her frantic pounding on my back when we were going 'too fast' and my extremely large bladder and not needing to stop every 20 minutes for food.

Its a trust issue, like <snip> thai girls

  16. Why did you leave her alone her in the US, away from family and Thai speaking friends?

How do you know that? Did I miss something? I dont remember the OP saying that she had no Thai speaking friends in US.

who cares it doesnt matter, the question was about divorce.... FOCUS!!!!!!

  17. I just found out by email last night that my wife wants a divorce. I work in Iraq while my wife, she is Thai, is living with my father in the U.S., she was working on her permanent resident card. She thinks that I am cheating on her but I think she is using that excuse because she wants to go home or is tired of me. Oh well not much I can do from The Sandbox. I tried to convince her by phone and email but to no avail and she knows that I can't leave work now.

My question is this: we were legally married in Thailand, paperwork and all, and so can I use a thai lawyer to draw up divorce papers? Any ideas on that from anyone? I am flying her back to Thailand next week so I would like to get this ball rolling. Any ideas about where I should look for such a lawyer. Any advice is welcomed.

We were going to buy land and start building a house in September but that idea seems to have been shot down. I even wanted to own a small business there in the future one day. I will probably have to stay away from Thailand for awhile, which is a shame. Oh well, to be a bachelor again. Don't know what I would do there just being by myself.

Again, I will take serioisly any good advice and only half-seriously bad advice. Thanks

Contact The US Immigration and let them know so you can block her getting the residency card in USA......

  18. Talking about "Red Terrorists" and the like just makes you look silly.

What would you call threatening to blow up a gas truck in a residential area? What would you call throwing molotov cocktails? I wonder what the family of that young boy murdered by the red shirts at the street market would call them. Probably not terrorists. Probably MURDERERS.

I prefer to be seen as "silly" than a lackey for Thaksin.

so you supported the blockade of the airport... ??? Of course no one should support terrorism, be they blockading an airport (holding a country to ransom) or otherwise for political gain..... I sggest you focus on policy, all yellows and reds should be arrested.... what they BOTH did is wrong...

It should be a crime to congregate with any yellow or red shirts in gatherings more than 5.... I understand the issues re the King etc..... but any gathering that is not supporting the King, hat is politically motivated should be better dealt with than the ASEAN SUMMIT and the blocade of the airport...

  19. Malaysian court sentences two Thais to hang for drug trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR: -- Malaysia's High Court on Wednesday sentenced two Thai nationals to death by hanging for trafficking almost 20 kilograms of cannabis five years ago, a news report said.

Sureeya Wuttisat, 45, and Asan Tong, 47, both from Thailand's southern province of Narathiwat, were detained in April 2004 at a petrol station in the central state of Pahang, the official Bernama news agency said.

The two were caught with 18.75 kilograms of cannabis, believed to have been brought in from Thailand for local distribution.

The report did not state when the men's sentence will be carried out.

Malaysia's tough drug laws prescribe a mandatory death sentence by hanging for those found guilty smuggling most types of drugs.

What a disgrace... Most first world countires dont think of Grass like these draconian countries.... you would be lucky to be incarverated for more than 1 year......

  20. I realize offcourse that there is no such thing as a perfect break up. And the way people break up varies a lot depending who we are and what circumstances etc. Anyway, here goes...

I find myself in a, for me, totally new situation. My mind is set up on breakin up with my thai girlfriend. I just havnt done it yet. I would appreciate any help you can give me in this matter.

Some background. This is my first thai girlfriend. We meat about a year ago in the bar where she worked. She is 19 and has worked in a bar for about 5 months total. We didnt become a "serious" couple until a few months ago, ie when I came here to Thailand for a longer visit. We have been living together since. I know she loves me a lot. I have met her family and we all got along very well.

The resons for breakin up is not that she has done anything bad or that I have found someone new. The reasons are purely cultural. We have tried to overcome cultural and educational differences but it doesnt seem to work. You can call me impatient or whatever but this is how it is. I can not change what I feel and I am not willing to put more effort in it than I already have.

There are however a few things that makes it difficult for me to break up. She is young, thai and a former bar girl. I can imagine some of the reactions and I fear a little bit what might just happen. Also, I genuinly care about the girl but I do not feel the kind of love for her that I think she should have from a boyfriend. I worry that she would go back working in the bars again. Offcourse I realize it is highly likely and that I cannot do anything about this. But I feel bad about it though.

What would be my best approach to break up? Are there any things I should be aware off? What kind of reactions should I anticipate? All help is appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Concerned Zorne

it depends if you give a shit about the person you are breaking up with..... if not a fax, sms, or send an email......
