  1. Thanks everyone for your replies.

Does anyone know if the Ministry of Education (I work for the Department of Formal and Non-Formal Education) imposes any limits on working over 60?

I know of at least one Thai teacher in this locality who is still teaching in a government school after the retirement age.

Why dont you ask the MOE or the Thai teacher you mentioned

    1. I think you are right in saying that I should ask the MOE. However, if you have ever experienced asking questions of officialdom, you never get the same answer from two people!

    2. I don't know the teacher persoanlly, only from students that she teaches.

    Looks like path 1 next.

  2. Renewed my work permit last week for two more years.... Teaching.

Hope it is the last work permit I renew.

    Turned 67 last June.

    BAYBOY.

Thanks for the quick reply and the encouragement it has given me.

As a matter of interest, are you working for a private school or government school?

And, was any mention made of age when issuing your contract of employemnt and/or work permit?

    Thanks again.

  3. I am 58 years old at present (59 in October 2012), and have had yearly visa extensions and work permits continuously since 1994. I work as a volunteer for a government office (NFE). My current contract of employment / visa / work permit expires in May 2013 and I expect to continue my volunteer work with NFE for a further year at least.

My concern for the near future is: Is there an age limit for volunteer government employees with regard to the issuing of a contract of employment by NFE, and thence a work permit from the Department of Labour (i.e. do I have to 'retire' at 60 the same as Thais)?

I cannot find any mention of age limits in the 'WORKING OF ALIEN ACT, B.E. 2551 (2008)'.

I am still very fit and active and would like to continue until I am at least 65 years old, i.e. October 2018.

Any advice, or links to where I can obtain advice, would be welcomed.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Thanks kevjohn. Just as I thought - the Thai standard is do whatever you like.

As an example, my friend's house was wired with all switches switching the grey cable which was neutral (the black cable was live). Therefore the light fittings had live wires running to them at all times!

My rented house has the live feed through the grey cable and neutral is black - the opposite to my friend's house.

How is it that there are not more people dying through electric shocks or whatever?

Having read the link you kindly gave, it seems that there is a standard but that no one follows it. In the link, those quoting IEC standards are wasting their time as there is no earth connection in a 'normal' Thai house and the colours are different here anyway.

  5. I would like to know which is correct in Thailand - should the positive single-phase cable be the grey cable or the black cable?

I have checked electrical outlets in several different homes and it seems that sometimes grey is positive and sometimes black! Is this Thai electrical standards?

    Thanks.

  6. I have just moved to a new four-storey building here and would like to know the correct method for calculating the BTU rating for an air-conditioner. The room is north-facing and so receives very little sunshine (only early morning). The room is approximately 5 metres long x 4 metres wide. I have heard that the way to calculate is to multiply the floor area by 700 for a room that is not affected by direct sunlight, which gives me a rating of 14,000 BTU. Having checked online (e.g.BTU Calculator), the size required appears to be only 7,800 BTU.

Can someone please give me correct advice on this matter please?

  7. "especially from young Thai people who don't read anything longer than 40 words at a time."

This says a lot for the so-called education that the elite offer to the young of Thailand.

I have worked in the system for over 17 years now and it is dreadful.

Example: One of my ex-students has just begun studying dentistry at a small college.

One of her tutors demands food and gifts from the students or he refuses to teach.

How are the young of this country going to get an education in a system that allows this type of behaviour from the teaching staff?

This country will never fully develop, it will only become further retarded, while governments such as the present one rule the roost.

Nice to see so many comments disagreeing with the post from the crazy Nation.

  8. the news in thaivisa seems very "yellow press" and it is important to look for other sources of information too

This forum is run by The Nation newspaper, so why are you surprised that it is so yellow?

Be careful what you say - a ban will be issued for anything 'anti' - about the elites and government.

They never did anything wrong but the Reds do nothing but wrong according to this forum.

Hence thaivisa is "yellow press" - mostly one-sided.

  9. Can somebody ask Thaksin supporter where is Thaksin now

You seem to be missing a very important point. No one really minds (or cares?) where Khun Thaksin is:

“I think it’s moved beyond taking Thaksin back to Thailand. It’s become very clear during the past three years,” says Buapun Promphakping, a sociologist at the University of Khon Kaen.

Khun Buapan obviously understands the situation a lot better than you.
