Just for the record, I am NOT bashing Thailand.
I am simply seeking to find out what it is that the vast majority of younger Thais are so proud about being born here. As they cannot seem to give me a distinct answer, I thought I would lay the question to TV members who have (presumably) lived here a long time and could perhaps shed some light on it.

It is nothing less than Indoctrination.
They don't know why..........they just know.
It is a result of the fundamental nature of the Socio-Political order.
Which was established in 1938/39, but subsequently re-branded and re-launched (with a different advertising campaign) just after WW2.
It's good when people know what they are talking about.
Kinda restores my faith in humanity.

Why? If you don't like it don't read it. Simple.
Are people not allowed to express views that aren't 100% positive about Thailand?
What are you afraid of?

Most of their traditions were invented in 1900's by the dictator Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram.
This is true. Well pointed out.

Wasn't this due to the fact that Britain & France decided that Thailand should be left neutral to allow free trade between Europe & Indochina?
Not really something to be proud about when your fate was decided by two other nations.

When this girl said what she said, I immediately (internally) tried to find some redeeming qualities about Thailand so I could agree with her - but I found myself struggling.
At the moment there seems to be nothing here that resembles the word pride. Everything points to the contrary. I hope that in the future I myself can become proud of Thailand too, but I wont hold my breath.

just sounds like an excuse for thai bashing from a 'new' member.
suggest this topic is closed.
I'm sorry if you think I am bashing Thailand but I am not.
This is a point that arose when I attended a dinner over the weekend with a team of young Thai girls, when one of them all of a sudden stood up and exclaimed that she loved her country so much, before raising her glass to cheers with the entire table..
It just got me thinking, what does she love?
This isn't an isolated incident, it has happened many times before in a similar setting.

Is a phrase I hear regularly from many young Thais (mostly between the ages of 20 & 40).
My questions is, what are these people so proud about? It seems to me to be a kind of forced statement when they say it, particularly after a few drinks, and none of them seem to be able to back it up with any substantial evidence..
Is this something that is drummed into the Thai psyche from birth? That they must be proud of their country, even though they haven't really achieved an awful lot?
I can count on one hand the number of Thai inventions, scientific or otherwise, that have benefited humanity as a whole. In fact, one hand seems to be too much, they have invented nothing, everything here is just copied from somebody else. Are they just plain lazy or is it a lack of education? Are they proud of being ruled by the military? Is it the wealth gap between the rich and poor? The pollution in the cities? I'm struggling to find what it is these young Thais are so proud of with regards to their country.
Maybe someone here can help.

This seems to be a rather accurate set of statements. Thank you for your input, the truth is definitely out there!
