be smart and educate yourself on what YOU can do for your body when you get sick...

you don't need chemicals all the time and thailand is known to give antibiotics for a cold (not helping) to whatever.... they love to add useless and even dangerous pills to make you feel NOTHING...

what about cough medication that suppress a cough so badly you stop breathing ... just a side effect ...

but the cough will be gone

always read or look up side effects of whatever you get prescribed and then decide if it is worth the risk ...

rabies ?  well... you can get the vaccination (would not recommend).... guess why :  when a dog bites you, you will need a FRESH SET OF INJECTIONS / VACCINES for rabies ...

you get it ?   if it would be ok to get a vaccine and to get bitten by a stray dog, than you would not need to have 3x painful injections again ...

you a bit all over ... you speak about birth control, followed by having kids, kind of opposite ...

use CONDOMS and don't poison your body with XENO-ESTROGENS ... cancers love to grow fast with estrogen overload... and there is nothing that raises estrogen more than those pills

but hey, up to you, I am just an alternative person that does believe in 1 medical stuff:  EMERGENCY ROOM ....  you have a car accident, a dog that bites, you got cut, by accident or a thief / robber  .... sure  ... ER and nothing else...

You are very kind to reply with such comprehensive advice.

dont where you went for blood pressure meds mate but i have high blood pressure and my meds usually 10ml cost 25baht for strip of 10 .   three months would be about 225baht quite reasonable.

So you get a prescription from the doc and then can you re-use the same prescription or do you have to keep going back and forth to the doctors every 6 months?

There are very few GP in Thailand - you directly see specialists in hospital outpatient clinics setting.  That said first doctor will often, if asked, act as a primary doctor and send you to other specialists as needed.  There will be clinics for children.

As for medications will let other replay but are you sure of spelling on BP medication?  Not Votum?

Thank you. Hospital outpatients it is then.  Seems strange to go to hospital for a checkup.

Yes it is Votum.  That's the brand name in Germany. It's called Benicar in the US and Olmesartan Medoxmil is the closest generic I believe.

  4. Hi,

I'm brand new to Thailand and in the process of getting settled. I hope some kind people will be able to answer some of these questions.

If I am not pregnant do I need a seperate GP (general practitioner) and gynaecologist or does the GP do pap smears/breast checks etc?

Do I need a seperate paediatrician for my kids and a adult GP for me or do we all just sign up for one doctor?

When I go to the pharmacy they only seemed to offer me birth control pills called Yazz (this is the combined pill).  Do they sell mini pill varieties there or was I just unlucky?

Can I get Votrum (European blood pressure meds) here?

Should I get my kids innoculated against rabies?

    Thank you in advance.

  5. Ok, I'm new in Thailand (like today).  I'm female (for context and visualization).

So, the bum gun.....I understand the use and value of the bum gun as a woman when peeing, indeed I think it's splendid and now I use the paper for drying my bits only.  However there is one thing that concerns me...pooing.  It seems to me that to blast ones back bottom with a bum gun would result in an unhygenic spray back.  I'm talking about microdroplets which would hit the back of the toilet walls, my skin..everywhere.  This cannot be right.  The alternative would be to wipe with paper and then finish with the gun but then I can't bring myself to put poo paper in a bin. It's horrible

I don't know what to do

    Help

You haven't arrived yet, and your biggest concern is a drink of water!

Worry about visas, money, accommodation, transport and the local women, water isn't a problem.

Haha, not really.  I have small children and I am the main organizer so I move from country to country with military precision to minimize stress for the family. So small things like knowing where to buy big water bottles with ease  or knowing the exact pronouncation of Tesco Lotus so I can jump in a taxi on the first day and not end up in some random place is part of it.   Visas, money accomodation etc is bigger picture stuff and already clear in my head.  It's the small shit which adds stress during transition.   Were I alone I'd be chill.  With kids it adds an extra layer.

I really appreciate your detailed response, very kind of you

  8. Ok i've found S.P.A drinking water company but rather irritatingly they don't have prices on their site.  I'll drop them an email.  I should probably google more effectively before posting.

Thanks Muffy and Stevenl for the tipping bottle info

  9. Hi all,

I've not arrived or secured accommodation yet but as I understand it I need to buy water.  I've read on here that there are several options -white slimey bottles or blue opaque bottles and they taste differently and vary in price.  My questions are:-

    • Do you cook with the water that comes out of the tap or use the purchased water?
    • Will Tesco deliver these big blue bottles? Someone mentioned it here years ago but I can't see them on Tesco Lotus online.
    • Where else can I buy the big blue ones? (I will probably live in the Kathu area)
    • Where do I get some sort of water dispenser system?  i.e something as simple as a wire device that 'tips' the bottle?

Apologies in advance if this has already been asked and dealt with.

  10. If I was in Thailand (which i'm not) and you brought that into my office I'd unscrew the back cover, remove the hard drive, plug the HD into another mac device via a SATA cable and see if I can repair it via another machine. If you can access the HD via another machine you will know that it's not the HD that is having the problem but the data cable.

If you are confident with tinkering with electronics you could google these things.  A data cable is easy and cheap to replace, a macbook repair kit and a SATA cable are cheap too. I'm not 100% sure that is what it is though.  Depends whethe this stuff is fun to you.  May be easier to just drop it off at a repair shop.  I always find that Apple technicians outside of Apple stores tend to work harder to fix it. A Apple Store person would just say "sorry your HD is <deleted>".

  11. Two important questions"

Do you remember password protecting your firmware?

Do you remember whether your encrypted your disk?

Regardless, try this -put the mac into single user mode like this........

...turn your computer off, then press and hold Cmd + S when your computer boots.  What you will now see is a black screen with lots of white text running down the screen.  If you've password protected your firmware it will not allow you do this so and there is not much I can do either.  If you have no firmware password the white text thing will start and you should wait for approx 4 minutes for it to stop doing it's thing

NB: If you’ve encrypted your drive, you’ll need to select the relevant user account and enter the encrption password you set to decrypt it if you don't see a request for a password you're ok.

Now type fsck -fy  Type it exactly like I have written in bold with the space between fsck  and -    Once you have typed it press return it will throw up more text when it looks like it has stopped you may see a message which may something like:

**The Volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.**

    ****The volume was modified****

    or it will say:

**The volume Macintosh HD was repaired successfully**

    ****The volume was modified****

Once you see one of those messages reboot your computer.  If I remember correctly typing reboot  or exit will reboot it.  If the message was **The Volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.**  Then start it again in single user mode and repeat the process. There’s no harm in trying multiple times, since the process makes changes to your drive on each pass. If it gets to 4 times with no luck, I'd give up.

Do you have another mac in the house? My next option would be to attempt to start the drive from another device and trying with something like Disk Warrior.

If you took your device into an Apple Store right now they will tell you that your HD has failed and that would be that.  We can try a few other things before giving up

  12. Do you still need help with this?
Your preferences or plist could be corrupted
Open System Preferences, go to Bluetooth, and delete the device profile from the preferences list by selecting it, then clicking the little “-” icon in the bottom.

    Restart

Now re-add by clicking the “+” icon, go through the setup process, and re-sync the device.

  13. Could you also tell me what version operating system you were running (if you can remember).  There are some things we may be able to do in single user mode with UNIX commands. It would also help to know the model of your device i.e roughly how old is it?  You say Macbook Pro-is that one of the new Mac Pro's or an older model?

If it helps to re-assure i'm an Apple Certified Mac Technician.  I do this for a living.

  14. Sorry for the delay in responding.  I believe you tried to start the mac in recovery mode by holding down Command+ R at startup?  When you then tried to repair the disk it said the disk was locked?  Is my understanding correct?

    If so do this:

Startup from your Recovery HD again (Command R.) After the Utility Menu appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu item in the screen's menubar. Paste the following at the Terminal's prompt:

    mount -uw /

Press Return. Quit the Terminal then restart the computer.

    Let me know
