At last a news article which calls the new rules by the correct name, ie a Regulation of the Ministry of the Interior. Other articles called it a law or an edict or perhaps some other incorrect names.

The law, ie The Land Act, and Ministeral Regulations as required by the law have existed for decades.

The law also states that every individual application by a foreigner to purchase land must be approved by the Minister. This means that even when an application meets all requirements stipulated in the Ministerial Regulation, the Minister still has the authority to disapprove the application.

The Land Code (1954) Governing Foreign Ownership of Land

    2)    Acquisition of land by virtue of Section 96 bis of the Land Code

A foreigner may acquire the land under the following conditions :-

2.1 Acquisition of land for residential purpose not more than 1 rai

2.2 Acquisition of land by investment of at least 40 million baht in accordance

with the conditions concerning the period of investment and the location of

land prescribed by the Ministerial Regulation

2.3 Acquisition must be approved by the Minister of Interior

I've been told, and by some Thai real estate lawyers, that US citizens can own 1 rai of land as a result of an agreement/treaty made between Thailand and the US during WWII. Has anyone else heard this or know anything more about it? ????

Misconceptions re Amity Treaty between Thailand and the US

It is commonly thought that this treaty allows US Citizens the right to own land in Thailand. This is not true and is specifically excluded in the treaty. In brief under the treaty, Thailand restricts American investment from the following fields of business:

    1.   Communications

    2.   Transportation

    3.   Fiduciary functions

    4.   Banking involving depository functions

    5.   Exploitation of land and natural resources

    6.   Owning land; and

    7.   Domestic trade in agricultural products.

If that merger will go on, I will go elsewhere from Dtac.

Don't want any business with True.

I wish that were possible. True no longer support satellite and if you have a problem with it, and you want to retain True Visions TV, then you are forced to change internet provider to True which is a disaster. We have been more than happy with 3BB for years and are now constantly on the phone to customer support.

I only knew him from seeing the fabulous musical revues he produced at the Tawan Daeng German Brewery in Bangkok, but Thai friends who went to Chula deeply respected him as a well-known professor and performer. He wasn't widely known internationally, but was quite famous in Thailand for decades.

I know him from Tawan Daeng as well but he was also a great help when we put on the Koh Samui Blues Festival many years ago. A very talented musician and performer. A sad loss.

The claim in this news is false. I've been fully vaccinated and downloaded Morprom application. No problems to register. When you get vaccinated you get your 13 digit code (it starts with 600000******) on A4 paper form and you simply enter it instead of Thai ID. It works. The problem is that no one has mentioned that when I got vaccinated. Lack of good instruction is in Thailand unfortunately usual.

Yes did the same - downloaded the Morprom ap from Play Store, registered with the Vac Number and it found me straight away. Needed some Help with a couple of the questions in Thai but having done that both my vaccination details are up to date, including today.

  7. Yes indeed.

    Jimbo,

Is that Koh Haa, in the south of Samui or Koh Tae Nok opposite KP (North West)? The latter one may be the one SBK is referring to.

sbk - educate me please - I always thought sailing round these islands was a regular tourist thing. We were on a large boat with 30-40 other people and a Thai crew, so I am not sure why we were in danger.

limbos - these are the Five Island off Talling Ngam. The names on my map are Ko Thalu; Ko Din; Ko Chet Mun; Ko Mae Thap and Ko Malaeng Pong.

Ko Tae Nok is north of Samui near to Koh Phangan, according to my map anyway, and we were nowhere near there.

Ko Haa is not on my map so I am not sure exactly where that would be.

  8. If you have Google Earth go to

    52 degrees 20' 10.93" N

    0 degrees 11'43.26" W

This is a Lancaster Bomber from the Battle of Britain Flight over Huntingdon.

Has anyone come across similar, or not to be expected, images on Googel Earth?

  9. If I was you I would go and check the reading on your meter to make sure they have read it correct. 1600, although obviously possible, looks like a little too round a number for me. If they overread it, it should correct itself on the next reading - but check it! There are of course other possibilites but check that first.

  10. That's right - come and have a look first.

Hospitals - one governement in Nathon and four private - Bangkok Samui and Thai International are the two newest with Samui International and Bandon having been here for a few years.

We have Lotus Tesco and HomePro and Macro and Big C are under construction.

Restaurants of every kind to suit your choice.

There is a lot of construction without a doubt but there are still beaches you can go to from the busy Chaweng and Lamai to quieter places in the south but also along the north coast.

  11. I think the question is this -

"If you are the guard who lies, which gate should I leave by?"

The truthful guard will tell him to leave by the wrong gate.

The lying guard will want to tell him to leave by the wrong gate, but as he is being asked to be the truthful guard should tell him to leave by the right gate - but he is the liar so will tell him to leave by the wrong gate.

So, he must leave by the gate opposite to that which either guard tells him.

I don't follow you. The truthful guard can't even answer the question, because he's not the guard who lies. Likewise the untruthful guard cannot answer because he is required to lie, but by answering the question, even if the answer regarding the safe gate is a lie, he is telling the truth with respect to being the untruthful guard.

Ok - then presumably we have to turn this round

"If you are the guard who tells the truth, which gate should I leave by?"

The truthful guard has to tell the truth.

The Lying guard has to tell a lie therefore he has to tell two lies - firstly that he is the truthful guard and secondly which gate to leave by. A double negative which causes him to tell the truth - even inadvertently.

Therefore (and I am dead already as I got it wrong the first time!) leave by the gate they say.

  13. Does anyone anywhere, but in particular on the ring road between Bangkok Samui Hospital and Tesco have the same problem we have everyday.

The voltage to our building keeps dropping to the extent that the fluorescent lights flicker, dim significantly and sometimes go out. Our UPS’s are constantly beeping for the same reason. Our Air Conditioning slows and almost stops. This is constant throughout the day.

Talking with the PEA they say we have a problem in our building – these fluctuations are nothing to do with them. All our wiring is new and we have had our electrician check it on numerous occasions and internally everything is fine.

If other people in this area are having similar problems maybe we can make them accept that the problem is theirs. Please let me know.
