  1. This thread got me laughing. About how naive people can be...

Falang come to a Junta-led 3rd world country with no due process and try to mix in the politics?

    An online petition! ????

    Screaming "Me! Me! Me!"

    And expect what?

Falang who follow all the rules and cause zero problems are barely tolerated as it is.

Those who stir things up and poke the hornet's nest, well, are behaving rather ignorantly if they expect to not get stung.

This depends if the comparison is with places such as Italy and New York, or with other countries regionally. The best pizza I ever had was some very inexpensive street pizza, topped with the freshest tomatoes imaginable, near the train station in Naples. But as long as we're not making unrealistic comparisons, Thailand can certainly hold it's head up in Southeast Asia. Standards in Pattaya are largely driven by those in Bangkok, where there are many excellent expat chefs who pride themselves on importing the right ingredients.

Alright, since we are gonna be diplomatic about it, I'll admit I might have a tendency to make unrealistic comparisons regarding food... and I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to cuisine.

I've had fabulous pizza in Chicago and NYC but my fav was in Boston (Reginas), until I got to Italy...

I was disappointed twice in CM with pizza and gave up looking.

Next time I'm in BKK I'll take a look, thanks.

    Shouldn't worry, there are many.

While there are many, the OP is looking for good ones, which narrows it down considerably.

    To close to zero.

Why would an American wear the Maple leaf?

So you do not understand that Canadians are also Americans? They live in North America. Argentinians are also Americans, they live in South America.

    Get it yet?

Let me guess: you are from the USA, so you think the world revolves around you. Either you haven't travelled much, or you don't interact much with others when you do, is my guess based on your words.

    Everybody likes Canadians.

Does everybody like those from the USA? Not so much. The response is radically different, in fact, depending upon which country you say you are from.

I happen to be from both countries, but long ago I started wearing only the maple leaf, to avoid unpleasant political conversations, arguments, accusations, and worse.

    Try it. You'll be amazed.

But in Northern Thailand vehicles aren't the problem...

If you believe that, I dare you to get in a songthaew and travel the ring road that follows the moat in CM. Let's see how long you can take the fumes, gasping for air, before vehicles start to smell like a problem to you.

My guess is you wouldn't last one circle around the city...

    Vehicle emissions not the problem?

Go stand in front of Airport Plaza for a few minutes and breathe in that traffic.

Let's see how many minutes you can, before understanding that vehicle emissions are indeed an issue...

  6. Well, 6 years and not much substance here.

The best pizza is to be found in Italy.

Do you go to Italy seeking Thai food?

Try the Thai food when in Thailand. They really do it justice. Seeking good pizza in Asia is 'counter-intuitive' at best...

    Def a troll, confirmed.

I'm baffled by the number of seasoned members here that continue to take this kind of bait.

You must be seriously desperate for conversation.

I've got some advice for the OP/troller tho:

Think the smog has affected the brain. "one of the worlds most popular cities" ? . Chaing Mai does not even come into the reckoning on this list of best cities.

CM is definitely one of Thailand's most popular cities. It's a fabulous place.

If only the air wasn't lethal...

  9. Ok, so you don't yet understand that prostitution is illegal. It already is illegal. Got that? Next...

Booze? I don't see how it benefits the country. One favorite thing about Malaysia is the lack of drunk tourists. So go ahead and ban liquid stupidity, all good with me.

I'm weary of all the never-ending immigration hoops to jump through and will visit less as a result.

The tougher immigration gets, the less I step foot in the country.

But the country needs more of certain laws that are actually enforced.

Like the burning nightmare in the north.

No (enforced) laws against those who pollute the air guarantee I won't be back there any time soon...

Even someone who is not "capable with computers" can immediately earn money online. It might not be much, but getting enough money for food and digs is not an issue.

This guy is claiming that, as an American, as a native English-speaker, he is unable to pick up work writing marketing articles? Or talking to Chinese students on Skype?

There is simply no way that anyone calling themselves a digital nomad would not know at least a hundred other digital nomads desperately in need of content - the perennial problem is that they generally don't have the budget to pay the 20 cents and up per word that a good native speaker would charge, but they would all leap at the chance to pay 10 cents per word to someone who is not an Indian.

The amount of work that the American economy alone is spinning off right now is incredible, I've never seen anything like it, it seems as if every business there is expanding as fast as they can, and that means every girl running her marketing business from Chiang Mia has more work than she has writers.

Even if he never actually gets out and socializes with other DMs, he would surely have seen all the posts by chancers on the Chiang Mai DM and expat Facebook groups offering writing gigs for 5 cents per word, or teaching English over Skype for $10 an hour.

Again, none of this will make your rich, but even morons on their first day in Chiang Mai are inundated with offers of shit work. There is a whole eco-system of scumbags feeding on newbie idiots or don't realize what their education and time is worth.

I have no idea what "capable with computers" means. Does he mean that he knows how to use a Web browser? Or that he can edit photos? Or design logos? Or fix a laptop?

So, "a few years", presumably enough time to pick up the sort of skills that an experienced DM would find useful. Does this mean he is able to write code?

I mean, if he even knows how to install WordPress plugins he could pick up any amount of "web design" work paying at least $20 a work. Actual coding of almost standard would earn him $40 - $60 per hour.

Wow. I find optimism in this worthy if not snarky read.

I spent months in CM and saw a few "cyber work spaces" but had no idea there was such a demand.

Makes me wonder if I could take a stab at it?

My capabilities are few but text editing or maybe teaching English online could work?

Years ago I took a couple computer science classes in college, so I am somewhat familiar with editing code in Dreamweaver, not that I want to build websites...

Thing is, I don't need much money, just some.
