  1. Read somewhere that Nation newspaper got informed that all telecom (only international or domestic too?) and Internet would be cut off "within two hours" by the military.

Probably to prevent anyone from watching or hearing Thaksin's address.

Can't find the quote anymore, it has scrolled out of view.

are you sure?????????i not find this news is true,i look everywhere but not find this very bad news for normal people

i hope is not true :o

I'm sure I read it as a copy/paste from the Nation web site to the 2bangkok.com forum, but I'm certainly not sure that's true.

I wouldn't be suprised this happens at least during Thaksin's address to the UN anyway.

I saw it quoted on this page:

    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...&sec=nation

hopefully that won't happen now that Thaksin has cancelled his speech at the UN...

  2. From what I understand, you can do 60 days, go to the immigration office and pay (1900b) to extend another 30 days. You could then pay again to extend 15 days. After that I think you could do a couple of border runs but not 3 of them.

Why not 3, surely that would be my 90 day quota???

oh yeah, my mistake. I think you could do 3 at the most at that point. After that, you'd have to stay out of Thailand for the 90 days or get another visa in your passport.

  3. I am so confused, I am coming to Thailand on sep 26th. I want to stay for 6 months. I have a 60 day tourist visa which (I think) I can extend for 30 more days, I (think) I can do 3 border runs and get 3 x VOAs hence giving me 6 months.

Can I stay for 6 months?

As a previous reply said, it would be best to have paid for more than one entry when you applied for that visa. Maybe you still have time to change it and pay a bit extra to get another entry on the tourist visa.

  4. a lot of requirements are needed to get a tourist visa.u can't just get one when u need one. if i remember correctly they are asking for a proof (bank account) that u can really afford to visit thailand. and that's where the problem lies coz most of this guys are regular chaps. even when i used to cross aranyaPT they were asking for a 20,000 bahat show money...

When I have applied and received tourist visa's from the Los Angeles Thai Embassy it has been very easy in the past. I just filled out the one page form and included my payment and passport. 2 and a half years it's been very simple. No proof of bank account info or anything. Last time I applied for it was in April '06. I remember I saw they had added requirements in April this year but i just sent in the same things I had in the past and it worked. Maybe I got lucky. I now see on the tourist visa page on the website they have added more requirements including a comforting statement:

"***Regulations Are Subject to Change Without Notice***"

  5. Yes, multiple entry visa is the way to go for frequent travellers to Thailand.

But I visited the Thai Embassy website for Los Angeles and it states clearly, "*** Non-immigrant visas will not be issued for such purposes as tourism, seeking employment opportunities, looking for a school for teaching or studying purposes, etc." Yet in the link you provided it shows a sample application with "Purpose of visit: holiday". So who is right? Or is there a different Non-immigrant visa available elsewhere that can be used for tourists?

You can apply for the tourist visa with each reentry costing $25.00 from the LA embassy.

What I have done for the past two years is when I am in California, I fedex'd my passport with visa application form, money order etc. to the LA thai embassy. I applied for a tourist visa with 3 reentrys. It cost me $75. Last time I was there I got it back with a new visa in 3 days.

When I got back to Thailand, after 60 days I went down to the immigration office and paid 1900baht to extend 30 days.

After that I did a border crossing and came back with a fresh 60 days and one of my reentrys crossed off. Extend for another 30 days and then I could squeeze one more border crossing in there.

After that the visa is used up and expires after 6 months anyway. Then it is back to California to visit family and get a new one or do some monthly bus rides until I was ready to go back. Hope this helps.

edit: who knows how much longer this plan will work though...

p.s. kudos to sunbelt for helpful and timely info.

  6. Im sick of the attitude that some people are showing here. Its almost like they are very happy that some of us will now have problems. Rediculous

I agree, for a lot of people this is going to cause (already causing) much stress and inconvenience. Others should consider that instead of saying som nam na.

The following is copied from Wikipedia:

som nam na, can be interpreted as "you got what you deserved," "serves you right" or "I'm laughing at your bad luck."

In German it is called schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude is also referenced in the Simpsons episode "When Flanders Failed." Lisa accuses Homer of feeling schadenfreude when Homer gloats about Ned Flanders being on the verge of bankruptcy. Lisa asks Homer, "Dad, do you know what Schadenfreude is?", to which Homer replies in a sarcastic tone, "No, I do not know what Schadenfreude is. Please tell me because I'm dying to know." Lisa then explains "It's a German term for shameful joy, taking pleasure in the suffering of others." Homer responds with "Oh, come on, Lisa. I'm just glad to see him fall flat on his butt! He's usually all happy and comfortable, and surrounded by loved ones, and it makes me feel...what's the opposite of that shameful joy thing of yours?" "Sour grapes." "Boy, those Germans have a word for everything."

Taking pleasure in other suffering is so not cool. Best of luck to all types of visa holders, investors, etc.

  7. Check out the Thaniya building attached to the Sala Daeng BTS station. 3rd floor. MacDonald Golf shop. They have a lot of clones there. My friend bought a set of Taylormade clone irons from there. I got a nice driver for about 4500b. I'm not sure on prices for sets but they have a good selection. Good luck. I'm very happy with my TaylorMade clone driver. it hits very nice. Choice of graphite shaft was included.

  8. Yesterday my wifes 07 did not work... yet my 04 number (which the wife is using also) worked.. :o

    totster :D

Well today (Saturday 10:15am) I sent an SMS to myself and got it right away! So it looks like it is getting better. Unfortunately, I tried to call my mobile number from my landline and it is still busy :-(

  9. Hmmm, I wonder if it's certain groups of numbers, my phone (and wifeys) have been working just fine (making and receiving calls).

Not noticed any breaks in service.

I have AIS and as of June 1, I couldn't get any incoming calls or SMS. It seemed to begin in the afternoon on Thursday June 1. Today June 2, I still can't receive calls or SMS. I can dial out to most numbers ok and I think I can send SMS ok too. Hopefully this will clear up soon. Right now, if I call my number froma landline it has a busy signal. I have often recieved "network busy" in the past calling some numbers, but that was due to congestion during peak call periods (I think).

This new problem is definitely annoying! :o I put my girlfriend's DTAC sim card in my phone and it worked fine last nite. Stupid AIS!!! Grrrrr.
