  1. Watched the fight here in the Philippines. Needless to say, the Filipino people are ecstatic over the PacMan's resounding victory. I don't think anyone really anticipated the ease with which Manny would win this fight. But he is an incredible fighter, with great hand speed and an unorthidox style that allows him to throw an amazing amount of power punches from different angles. Hatton is a fine fighter. But after the fight, Pacquiao's trainer, Freddy Roach, said they saw on tape that Ricky "double clutches" (draws his hands back) when he throws a power punch. And that is what did him in...Manny saw Ricky draw back his right hand and he avoided the punch and then landed his vicious left cross that ended the fight. Pacquiao is a national hero in the Philippines and this victory probably will vault him into a powerful political position after his fighting career is over. Compared to other stooges who have been political leaders in this country, he might not be a bad alternative.

  2. Long story but I have been talking to this checkout girl at my local 7-11. We always joke around and sometimes if its not busy

there i will buy a beer and we will sit there and talk about everything under the sun. She looks 20ish, stunning looks, lek and real nice

    personality.

SO we were talking the other day and she was complaining she only makes 8,000 baht a month working graveyard shift 60-70

hours a week. So very jokingly i said "be my girl and and i take care you". She thought for a minute and says "OK".

So i laughed it off thinking she was just joking as we always do.

I go in today and she corners me by the beer cooler and says "When u make me girl you?". Again i just laughed but she said "no laugh i

no joke you". I look down at her and the bad wheels in my head turning. Then i said to myself no she is just joking so i said "I dont believe." She comes over close and holds my hand and says seriously "me no joke". Then the bad wheels in my head start

spinning wildly and i almost dropped 2 big bottles of singha on the floor. We talked more and I said let me think about.

    Well should i

    A) go for it

:) start shopping at Family Mart

    C) start shopping at my local Wat

    D) Become a Monk

    E) Move to Koh Lan and sell trinkets on the beach

    F) Get on the Dr Phil show

    G) Double my Meds

Since you have already established that you are a prick, you might as well use it for something useful.

  3. Thaksin's interview on CNN showed a man who was evasive and at times really pathetically inept at framing his responses. He looked old. While the CNN anchor who was handling the interview did a very poor job, I'm not sure she could have done much different since Thaksin refused to answer her direct questions and instead just continued to jabber that he didn't want violence (although he told his followers that he wanted a revolution). The sum of the interview was a total embarassment for him.

  4. There is enough turmoil already and this crisis will not benefit from the interference of do gooder outsider influences.

I would like to see the photos of these Farangs, if they live in Thailand, circulated around all Immigration departments and these clowns deported.

There are some people who are just professional agitators. They might be just tourists, but when there is a good riot (or demonstration), they show up. We had them in the anti-war movement in the USA back in the 60's and 70's. Funny thing is I have never heard of them going to China to demonstrate against government abuses in Tibet or showing up in Tehran to protest against the treatment of women or gays.

  5. I don't want to get into a taffy pull about whether the red shirts or the yellow shirts or the blue shirts are acting in a responsible manner...the bottom line is that Thailand has received a devastating blow to its image that will not be soon overcome. As a former resident, I am greatly saddened by the events over the past six months. It appears as though the country is on an inexorable path towards civil war. For my loved ones and friends still in Thailand, I am terribly concerned.

  6. Songkran alcohol ban canned, crackdown on alcohol postponed to April 16

BANGKOK: -- The Thai government has postponed the proposed alcohol ban during the Songkran festivals. The National Committee for Alcohol Consumption Control yesterday canned the no alcohol ban during the traditional Thai new year from April 13 to 15.

The committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart, found that a alcohol sales ban during Songkran would further harm the tourism industry.

"The meeting decided the ban would have a bad impact on tourism, particularly on Songkran day, which draws over 150,000 foreign tourists," Maj Gen Sanan said.

Alcohol crackdown to start April 16

The Committee has become alarmed at the deterioration of family values and family unity. One of the main evils of this problem is alcoholic beverages. The new proposal will require bars, convenience stores and entertainment centers that serve alcohol to adjust their closing times as follows:

All bars, shops and entertainment centers will closed based on a sliding window. Mondays close at 1:00AM, Tuesday 12:00 Midnight, Wednesday 11:00PM, Thursday 10:00 PM and Fridays at 9:00PM. Saturdays, Sundays and all official holidays, alcoholic beverages will not be allowed to be sold.

"The sliding window will reduce the problems with sudden alcohol withdrawal and allow family members to be able to spend more time with each other. Saturdays and holiday closures will improve Thai tourism and family outings", says Boonlert Sukaparpraeng, consumption controller at the Department of Culture.

The sliding window could be different in various provinces allowing the creation of many jobs for coach and minibus companies to ferry foreigners around to the correct province to fit in with the well established pattern of Immigration decentralized offices, recently enforced by the Immigration Bureau.

Foreigners holding a valid work permit or residency will still be able to purchase alcohol in so called Mom'n'Pop shops during the prohibited hours.

"This is typical for the Democrat Party", says Somchai Duemlaukaeng, Deputy chairman at the Consumer Protection board. "Thai people has one of the highest alcohol consumption pattern in the world per capita". This will only increase the sales of Lao Khao in the provinces."

    Massage parlour minimum age

On April 16, another controversial law is being enforced. After that date, massage parlors can no longer employ anyone under the age of 40, and are required to register all employees as such. This will minimize the request by customers for "extra services" which can cause problems with marriages and minor wives.

George, you are such a naughty boy.

  7. This tragedy eerily reminds me of the fire in a New Jersey nightclub about 15 years ago that also killed several hundred people. The cause of that fire was fireworks that set a stage curtain on fire. So it just doesn't happen in Thailand. But in the United States, at least, laws were enacted to prevent this from ever happening again. We will see if this follows suit in Thailand.

  8. How do the philippines compare? Naturally I have an extreme love of bars, so cost of drinking, cost of living, cost of women :D:D:o

I was hoping to get a few peoples insight of a comparison (pros and cons) of the two on the bar level AND on the other stuff. Aswell, if anyone knows the visa situation in the phils compared to Thailand?

A lot depends on where you live in the Philippines. It is an archapelago with 7,500 islands. If you live in a major city like Manila, then you can expect major city problems such as high crime, heavy traffic congestion and higher costs for lodging and food. But it also benefits such as a very good nightclub scene. The Philippines is cheaper to live in than Thailand right now. The exchange rate on the dollar is 47/1. You can get whatever you are looking for in Manila.

I live on the island of Mindanao, which right now has three different insurgent groups creating unrest. We had 11 people killed in Christmas Eve mortar attacks and bombings in central Mindanao. Still, most of the island is safe, especially the city of Cagayan de Oro. Cost of living is low on Mindanao...my four bedroom beachfront home on 1/2 acre cost the equivalent of $75,000 USD.

The major benefit of the Philippines, other than the cost of living and the friendliness of most of the people, is that English is spoken by most people. The major negative is that the Philippine cuisine will never be world class, especially when compared to Thailand. Still, I like the food here because you have an unlimited supply of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. Also don't expect to be living in a First World country. The Philippines infrastructure is terrible...roads are a travesty and many buildings are decrepid. The tap water can't be consumed. Electricity is subject to frequest brownouts. And the government of the country is terribly corrupt.

Still, I love the Filipino people and wouldn't live anyplace else now that I have been here for almost a year.

As far as visas go, if you are from the major developed countries, you don't need a visa. You can arrive on your passport and will have a 15-day tourist visa. If you want to stay longer, you will need to go to the Department of Immigration and apply for an extention. This usually involves around 30,000 worth of tea money. I have a lifetime visa by virtue of work I have done on behalf of the government of the Philippines. For Americans there are 50 lifetime visas available annually and these are usually subjected to heavy under the table payments. Plan on spending upwards of 300,000 pesos (about $6,350 USD) in tea money to get a lifetime visa and at least 150,000 pesos for a one-year visa.

I won't get into the cost of bargirls in the Philippines. As in Thailand, that is subject to your own tastes and needs. I can assure you, however, that Filipinas are some of the most beautiful women in the world. But like any other Asian country, the women here look at all foreigners as their personal ATM.

  9. I use TV mainly for crucial information in these troubled times. I respond to breaking news alerts seeking to be informed, but find that I have to plough through page after page of vitriolic ranting comment. There has been so much anger on the pages of late, often along tribal lines, that it sometimes causes me to despair. Its rather like being in a bar and you're the only sober one there while everyone else hurls abuse at each other.

Lively debate? Sure, but there are times when we can practice a little moderation, follow the 'middle path' and at least be civil. I do not envy the moderators in their most challenging positions - it must be extremely difficult to police this site. At least we can tune out, they cannot.

Perhaps the best way for Thai Visa to handle its reportage of published news stories vs. opinion posts is to separate them. Have the media story as the lead item and then a sub-forum on responses to the story. This would separate the wheat from the chaff, or in most cases, the bull from the bullshit.

  10. Trick answer with American/Canadian. There is no such thing as a distinct American or Canadian cuisine. Rather it is a blend of many influences, the product of the different immigrant's own cuisines. The result? Variety and compositions that challenge the pallet. Don't snear. There's the fine shellfish of the east coast, hearty meals that keep yoou warm on a cold day courtesy of the First Nations and early european settlers, the light fish of the northwest, the spicey delights of TexMex, the zing of Southern BBQ, great beef from the midwest, fusion or basics of the central plains and innovations along with asian from the west coast. Why settle for one type when you can have the world :o

That's exactly why I also voted for American/Canadian, Geriatrickid. I think many of the uninitiated might think American/Canadian consists of McDonald's, KFC and Canadian Bacon. Little do they know....

  11. Hes a dead dude and nobody is really sure from what side but by us discussing it we lower ourselves to the callous Samak remark. It doesnt matter what side he was on. He is dead. RIP. Condolences to the family. Lets leave this one here in relation to the dead man.

    He was a CD member.

    Collateral damage.

Gee, thank you for your deep, sincere condolences. Life is sure easy when you are a jerk with a keyboard and monitor in front of you.

  12. First night of emergency state passes with no violent incident for PAD

The People's Alliance for Democracy continued its demonstration in the Government House throughout the night without any violent incident.

But rumours spread throughout the night that either pro-government protesters or security officials would raid the Government House to evict PAD demonstrators.

When the morning came, the tension apparently eased and many protesters left the rally site while many others had breakfast provided by the PAD.

It's positive note that there was no repeat of this....

...and in this topsy turvy world, if we can't depend on four photographs posted by one of the only non-partisan members of this forum- what can we depend on?

    I agree!

Think People...the above are pictures of DAAD, the PPP sponsored (and paid for) group that violently attacked the peaceful PAD protest at Government House. How can anyone still claim that the PPP are the good guys????

.... and if we can't depend on four pictures posted by one of the only really non-parisan members of this forum to give us a clear understanding of the conflict- what can we depend on?

While it's true, I am not from Paris...

I and everyone posting here is voicing their opinion.. you have yours and I have mine.

As stated earlier, anyone is free to post opposing views, be they text or photographic.

SJ, there is a fine line between opinion and propaganda. I'm afraid you have crossed that line too many times for you to have preserved your credibility with me. I am truly sorry to say that.

  13. Samak interview in which he threatens CNN's Dan Rivers when he's confronted with a lie...

"You don't use this word to me, eh? Don't use this word to me again. This is an insult to me", said in a threatening and menacing tone while pointing his finger at the interviewer...

Did we watch the same video? Samak pointed his finger at Rivers after Rivers said some people consider him a puppet of Thaksin. It was not while he was confronted with a lie. At least that is what I saw on the video on my screen.

Perhaps you forgot the part where Rivers reminded Samak that in their last interview, Samak claimed that there was nothing wrong with being Mr. Big's puppet.

No, I didn't forget it. But Samak didn't react to that. He got mad at the follow-up question. Perhaps he was fuming at the reminder and then reacted when Rivers wouldn't let the subject drop. But SJ said he got mad at being confronted in a lie. I didn't see it the same way.

  14. Yes, there is nothing that get's my blood flowing fast than a good riot and blood in the streets. And if the troops and tanks are rolling in the streets, I'll have a woodie that will last for weeks.

    -- George S. Patton --

Anyone who thinks that this civil unrest won't affect tourism is kidding themselves. Tourism is already down because of the economy. People are staying closer to home. And now we have the spectre of riots and possible military intervention. Will the sex tourists still come? Maybe. But the humping they will get might not be worth the humping they will get.

  15. Did anyone see the Samak and Sonthi interviews by Jonathan Head on BBC World this morning?

Samak was extremely odd to say the least considering it was for an internatioanl audience and Sonthi very calm.

  16. Have any of you considered that the principle was trying to help the gay students find partners?

Have you considered buying some land in the Nevada desert that I have for sale?

    Address please :o:D:D

:D The address is: Inthemiddleofnowhere, Nevada 30744. Hehehehe. Unfortunately, I just sold the land to a sheik who was homesick. But I do have a nice bridge in Brooklyn that is for sale.

  17. Geriatrickid, you can dress principal's stupidity up in any gown you want...it is still a hamfisted approach to the problem. I could care less whether she is an award-winning teacher or whether she is black, white or purple. But then I'm not politically correct...she screwed the pooch. I just know when someone has acted in a manner where she has created more problems than she has solved, then her judgment is questionable. She should be reassigned. There are consequences for stupidity, especially when it involves someone in authority over young people.

  18. The state of emergency also prohibits news publicity in a way that terrifies the public.

Doesn't that mean this order is in violation of itself? Obviously Samak has only concern for himself, and have no clue what a HUGE negative impact the declaration of a state of emergency means to the rest of the world, especially investors & tourists. Samak's short-sighted efforts to save his own neck will be at the expense of all of Thailand.

Samak obviously intended and wanted this to happen. He & the PPP paid for buses to bring their supporters in from the North so they could deliberately start a fight and cause violence.

The PAD have been demonstrating peacefully for weeks and continue to be peaceful.

100% of the trouble is due to Samak & the PPP who organized and deliberately intended their supporters to cause the recent violence that now gives them the excuse to attack the PAD.

    Samak Ow Pai!

If you expected that Samak would go down without a fight, then you are delusional. He will do anything and everything at his disposal to save himself and his government.

  19. This is one of the most irresponsible actions I have ever seen a person in authority take...and a school principal at that!!!! It is inexcusable and the principal should be fired immediately. If I was the parent of one of the students I would be seeking legal remedies.

  20. If you know of other countries that allow this, Yabbit, I would be most interested.

you might want to read this

    http://www.tsroadmap.com/reality/birth-certificate.html

according to this web site http://www.transgenderzone.com/library/legal/7.htm it is possible to obtain new documents including passports, National Insurance cards and driving licences in a new name and gender.

i did not read every thing in details, it seems it is not 100% clear.

Yabbit, I like in the Philippines right now. But I'll have my son in Colorado check on the validity of changing a birth certificate. I am highly suspicious of this. My wife was almost deniend entry into the USA because she was a transsexual. But if I am wrong, I will be most happy about it. Unfortunately, it will not change my wife's legal status in Thailand.

  21. Yabbit, you can't change the sex on your ID in the USA since the Patriot Act went into effect.

that is new to me, strange. how would this have any thing to do with being patriot or not.

The Patriot Act federalized state-issued drivers' licenses so that they must all comply with federal mandates. One of those mandates is the accurate reporting of an individual's natural gender. The U.S. Government, by the way, requires the original gender of a person be listed on passports. So I don't know where you got your information, but I'm afraid you are wrong. Wish that wasn't the case.

As far as I know, only the Netherlands allows transgendered individuals to put their transgendered sex on their official identification cards or passports. If you know of other countries that allow this, Yabbit, I would be most interested.

For those of you not familiar with the Patriot Act, it was passed after the 9/11 attacks. It provides sweeping federal legislation that allowed government eavesdropping of telephone calls and internet transmissions. Among the myriad mandates, it tightened the issuance of identification cards so that they must now be uniform accross the country.
