Ha it's the usual story of the good old Farang ATM. Doesn't much matter whether the Thai is male or female they have come to believe that farang has so much money he can never run out. The vast majority of Thais that I have met have no understanding of responsibility when it coes to money, course neither do many farangs. But certainly the phenomenon seems exagerated in Thailand. I'm afraid best advice is you take care of bills in advance personally before you go.

Hi Gammy, may I ask what type of visa did you apply for and where there any special requirements. I am looking to spend 6+ mths possibly 1yr in Thailand am not too close to retirement.

PREM R, I think you answered a question for me before,but just need to confirm. I hope to go to Thailand for 6 mths+ from mid October. When you applied for your visa in Birmingham what exactly did you tell them you wanted, did you tell them the duration you wanted to stay etc. Just want to make sure I ask for the right thing and say the right things.

You may find that you can get a 3 entry tourist visa (TR) from the Thai embassy or consulate in Australia,(in the UK you can get as many entries as you require) each entry would be valid for 2 months which would cover your intended stay of 6 months.  

   

Hi PREM-R, are you sure about you facts here (hoping you are). The reason I ask is because I was hoping to do this as I had heard it was possible. But I recently submitted a question to this effect in the "Issues and answers" section of the "Phuket Gazette" Simply asking that as a tourist I would like to stay in Thailand for 6-9 mths extended holiday, did they know how I might go about this. This was the reply,

“No visa covers a stay of six to nine months for a tourist. You can ask for a tourist visa that will permit you to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, and you will be able to extend the visa for another 30 days. After that, you will have to leave the country. ”
