    HI all experts!

I have a big concrete fish pond. from around 20M3. Mostly Tilapia in it.  Around 6 big ones (30cm), 30 medium sized ones (10cm), and a few hundred very small ones (2cm)There is also some duckweed and waterhyacints in it.

I have already a long time an hydroponic system, we mostly grow Morning Glorie (Pak Boon) in it.

Now I placed the hydroponic system in my fish pond, and circulate my pond water through it. I started with around 25 plants. It looks like there is not enough food in the water to keep the plants happy.

Ph value is around 6.8. Is there a way to give fertilizer to the plants without harming the fish? Or should I wait till the small tilapia are bigger? Any other ideas?

    Thanks for reading!

    Arjen.

I know this is a fairly old post but I have a little bit of input that might be useful to have on the record here in this thread.

First of all this NFT system you have here is not really recommended for Aquaponics because of the solid waste from the fish. If you have a really good filter system then you can get away with it but otherwise any particles of fish waste passing down those pipes will get stuck in the roots and go nasty.

Also you have highlighted the aquaponics problem of having loads of nitrogen but little else, this has been a particular frustration for weed growers who want to grow aquaponically. Because you cannot add nutes without poisoning the fish. There is actually a way of doing it but it's a bit of a pain. Maybe worth it for weed, probably not for lettuce. Essentially the roots are split into 2 zones, half of the roots go in the aquaponic water and half into seperate hydroponic water (with the supplementary nutes).

  2. Hello all, I have read the entire thread and found it to be very interesting. I'm looking into setting up an aquaponic system in Cambodia (around Phnom Penh).

On the facility side of things I am well suited as I have a technical hydraulic background and have good building/plumbing experience having done some major DIY building renovations as a hobby. I'm much weaker on the farming side of things as I have little experience of plants or fish. So lots of learning needed.

I'm starting right from scratch with few resources around here apparently. So any pointers or guidance from your more experienced guys would be gratefully received. My rough plan is to just get a smallish system started so I can learn lessons as I go. Then make a big system if it goes ok. Could do with getting something running asap just because the nitrogen cycle will take ages.

My first priority is to decide on location. I have various parcels of land I can use but each will require some effort on getting water power. My other option is to put a small system in beside the house in town but I'm not sure if there is enough direct sunlight for plants to grow. Can anyone offer any advice on sunlight and growing? I notice in pictures that people seem to actually be putting barriers between the sun and their plants.

Also any local lads than can give info on local aquaponic suppliers that would be great. I can see there's a place called Kannika farm that sells AP supplies so I plan to pay them a visit.

  3. I am planning to go there with my wife and kid on Monday but I can't tell how thing work logistically, could anyone shed any light on things please?

Is it like a normal waterpark where there are lockers and then you walk around all day in your swimwear? Do we need to take anything?
