  1. Good work...clap2.gifjap.gif Keep it up...

Last week there were three very young elephants begging in the streets of Lopburi during King Narai Festival. They were there every night from 6 PM to 12 PM with their very young mahouts, lying on the ground in the noise and the crowd.

Policemen were in great number aroun but.......

So why is something legal in some places and illegal in other places?

These babies elephants have been around here in Lopburi for months, so who to contact?

  2. Have you sent this recording to the Thai media (TV)? It seens the anchorman in the morning news on Thaitv3 likes animals, maybe he could help?

At the same time, every night, in Lopburi, 3 elephants cubs (very young) with their (very young too) mahouts beg for money among the crowd who goes to King Narai Palace for the last 5 days. This with dozens of policemen around. Is that still legal? The noise there and the crowd there is hard to describe and they spend hours there, lying on the ground or moving from one leg to the other. they really look stressed as they are young cubs. Anuthing to do with them?

  3. And both of these animals are much safer and more efficient than the Baygon spray that people use and all its toxic components.

I don't mind these animals at all even if the ones that live inside the house leave some tracks I have to clean up. Even the noise the geckos make doesn't bother me, it's part of the noises of the night, just as owls belong to the noises of the night in Europe

  4. These animals aren't all rare. For some it is fine to trade them within a country, but when you try to trade them internationally it is illegal. There is no shortage of monitor lizards in the country, but it is still illegal to trade them internationally. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, which Thailand has signed, includes animals that are not currently threatened, but could become threatened if international trade in them were allowed to go on. So you can buy some of these at Chatujak, but if you try to take them out of the country you can be arrested.

Thanks a lot. That's a very clear answer :) Just one more question if I may? So how can you know if it is legal or illegal to buy some species of parrots at Chatujak for example? Is there a list of animals you can't trade in Thailand? I'd love to purchase a parrot, one of the Invictus specie, f.e. how can I know it's allowed here or not?

  5. You should know kindergarten teachers have to put a lot more effort and thought into getting the lesson topics across to young students. Do you think because your students are older, maybe near adults that you should be getting paid a higher wage?

Not at all, I have a great respect for Kindegarten teachers. You got me wrong. I just wanted to stress the fact that some Thai universities do not offer high salaries, unlike some Thai schools.

When did I ask for "higher wages" than K. teachers?

  6. Hi, I am always surprised by the difference in salaries in this country. I am a full time teacher at Rajabhat University, 150 km.north of Bangkok.I The job is great, the students very friendly but the salary is only 27,000 THB. How come a kindergarten teacher can make 35,000 to 40,000 THB a month?

  7. I know what works with some people won't work with others. But It's been a year and a half since I haven't smoked a cigarette. I tried several times with different methods, including acupuncture, Zyban,ettc... but I only made it with Quomen which I bought in a pharmacy near Silom. I followed the indications on the leaflet, removed all the ashtrays from my house, threw the lighters away, washed the ashtray in the car and bought new sitcovers. In a way, I tried to remove everything that could remind me of that habit I had had since I was 18. I was 50 then.

No side effects, no nausea, no dizziness, a little bit of insomnia but I watched some old movies, no influence on my mood. The only drawback, a gain of weight around my waist which I can't lose. I got 7 kgs in 2 weeks...and I caughed for a while then it stopped after a few weeks.

So if you are ready, give Quomen a try and maybe it'll work with you.

PS If anyone can suggest me how to lose those extra kgs around my waist.... there's a gym near where I live but I really don't know what workouts to do and what food I should eat or avoid. If anyone can help me?.... Thanks

  8. I read last week about the Indonesian guy who was arrested at the airport trying to smuggle endangered species. I wonder why he was the only one arrested.

What about the Thai guys who supplied the animals?

The same weekend I went to Chatuchak in the pet area. There were hundreds of animals for sale, a great many of them belonged to these endangered species, dozens of very young wild birds, owls, baby hawks, dozens of reptiles for sale, turtles, monkeys, etc... (the young birds who hatched a few days before will certainly die within a few weeks)

How come there was no policeman walking around? They were busy harassing the T.shirt sellers in the market.

Who is the most dangerous? The guy who sells Tshirts or the one who sells animals that are now on the verge of extinction?

I just saw one, in a shop, discussing with a guy who sold marmosets.

How come there is a stand in the market for the defense and the protection of wild animals with tiger hides and ivory and that no one sees that no animals from endangered species are sold at the market?

Is it all about teamoney and bribes?

PS. The general condition of kittens and puppies for sale on the market is poor. Many of them show early signs of lethal problems that will end with death. Beware if you buy them! Some have clear symptoms of contagious diseases. Beware!(Saw a dead puppy in a bin, as well!)

  9. I was so scared about posting about this on this forum. I always hoped that a forum like this could be somewhere that people who had real problems could get some heartfelt advice. I have doubted this many times over the years. You have all have proved me so wrong. Thank you so very much for your support. I have some of the best friends you could ever imagine. Sometimes you just can not say what you really want to say with the 'bestest' of friends. Kdude your reply and pm was so nice........I thought about it all the time this morning on my drive to work, and ever since. Frenchtouch..... I promise I'm staying strong and positive. Prothaiexpert...thank god it's just not me. I was wondering if there was ever another happy (sic) ending!!

He's doing OK today. 'What did the Doctor say?' I asked. He said 'Let us all prey that you don't have cancer' Here, here from me. What a strange thing to say. The nurses are so 'A: typical. I worked in the Uk health service years ago. We always said there were two types of nurses. Dedicated..totally and the IDGAF types. (I don't give a......). He's got the IDGAF. It's not a cheap hospital. He told me today the nurse came in and said 'Oh, your saline is nearly finished' . And his saline did finish after 30 minutes. Two hours later the nurse came back. 'Why didn't you press your call bell to tell me your saline had finished ?' <deleted>?

I have to say though that despite all that, the treatment at the hospital and the staff, in general, has been very good.

I helped him shower again today. He hasn't eaten for three days so his stomach is quite flat. He said 'Look at this, ...can you see a difference?' And I could. The right side of his stomach looked really flat, but the left side looked almost swollen. 'Feel it' he said. So I did. There was a lump the size of a small egg. So my silent imagination went wild.'Oh that's the diverticulitus' I said. Not with a lot of conviction.

We did laugh though. There's this poor old man opposite who insists he is Thaksin Shinawatra and demands bed baths at 4 o'clock in the morning. Then complains that he's too cold. Today, he rang his call bell. The nurse came. 'What's the matter Mr Blahblah?' 'I need to speak with his Majesty on the telephone' he said..'Why' said the nurse. 'I have yellow shirt people living under my bed and they come at night to photograph my penis' he said.

    Thank you all again.

At least you haven't and won't lose your sense of humor...Very good! Besides, if your partner's neighbour is too much "off his rocker", why don't you get your friend a private room where you could stay at night. As someone said before, it's very common for family members here to stay overnight with their relatives. I have even had a picnic with at least 5 other people on the floor of his hospital room while I was visiting a friend... It was a bit surrealistic...

Don't focus too much on the IDGAF nurse and as you know since you live here, people don't like to lose face especially if it comes from a farang, so avoid all remarks about her lack of professionalism, she'll just hate you more and her attitude will worsen. Play the other game even if you'll hate it. Be nice to her, talk to her in a sweet way, buy her some "kanom" and who knows, her attitude may change in a positive way.

These silly souvenirs that Thai people like to offer to their colleagues when they visit another province, well, I bought a few each time I travelled and they have helped me a lot with arrogant or distant colleagues in my job. Now, LOL, they "love" me.

The good point is the the general health situation of your friend hasn't worsen. That's a good point. Now you have to wait for the exams and the results.

You may wonder why people take time to write to you even if we don't know any of you. Well, I must say I read your 1st message a few minutes after you had written it and it was so desperate for a word of compassion and understanding...but I was in a hurry and didn't have time to reply and I kept thinking while I was driving to work too "Someone needed help this morning and I didn't even take a few minutes to send a few words of kindness" I replied as soon as I got home later that day. Just the way I'd like someone to do it if I were in the same situation. That's all.

    Take care, both of you.

PS Sorry for my broken English...

  10. Hi there,

I've just read your message and feel sorry about what you and your partner are going through.

But you have to be strong and patient. If he is in a good hospital, Thai doctors know their jobs and will do all they can to help your partner.

Spend as much time as possible with him, try to always have a positive attitude whatever happens.

Buy him those little things he likes to eat (if he can eat them), get him one of these portable DVD players and bring him his favourite movies so that time doesn't seem too long, ask him if he 'd like massage. People who spend days in bed love to be massaged. Get someone to do the massage if you can't, you know how relaxing they can be.

He needs you now, more than ever and from your attitude depend his moral and his strength.

Keep faith and never lose hope.

    All the best!

  11. dam_n! its back to using plastic food bags then........

    that's exactly what i was thinking. 5555

but i think the plastic bag story was about junior high students in Issan, right?

surely students in bangkok have moved on to... i dunno.. saran wrap or something else by now?

yes, it exactly refered to Mattayom 1 students who used plastic bags. Matatyaom 1 students are 12 years old, right? Isn't it a bit early to have sex?

As for the condom machines, it's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard just after they discovered more than 1000 foetuses in a temple. Who were their 'mothers"? A great number of them were probably teenage girls!

  12. -"Simon says"usually works well even if the audience is a bit old. That way you can check whether your group understands directions or not.

-Prepare a list of easy questions, about countries,(What's the capital of...., what colour is the flag of....)vocabulary ( can you name 5 animals livig in Thailand, fruits,etc....) general knowledge (When did the tsunami hit Thailand?....) Then give one of them a ball to give to the person next to him, play some music, when the music stops, the one with the ball has to answer the question. If he can't, ask him/her to perform the Monkey or Chicken Dance!

    - Start with an easy word like "RED", the next person must find a word beginning with the last letter, D, i.e DOG then the nex one with G and so on, words can be used only once.

    Enough?

  13. For those who read Thai see the comments under the attached link, if you don't read Thai get a Thai friend, wife, g/f to read them for you.

What the Thais have to say about this

So what do you think will happen will the 2 girls driving the car be prosecuted or not ?

Could someone explain what is going on with the girl who was the driver of the car? Is there some kind of cover-up because she comes from a wealthy family? Is that right or are these just rumors?

  14. I just came back from a few days in rural Cambodia. Guess what? Most people wear helmets, and farmers in Cambodia are certainly not richer than those in Thailand. Another thing that struck me was that most kids walked or used bicycles to school. In Thailand, not even the poorest farmer would risk the physical damage to her children as a result of walking a few hundred meters to the local learning institution.

The laziness in this country is beyond description sometimes.

Absolutely true. I just come back from Indonesia and Bali. I don't think Balinese are richer than Thai. However, everyone there is wearing a helmet, a real one, not a salad bowl, strapped under the chin. Driver and passenger. And only two people on one bike. Are Balinese more intelligent than Thai?

Last week, I saw a family of 4 on a bike, father, mother, young son standing on the seat, and the woman was sitting side-saddle..... breastfeeding the little one. That on a very busy road at rush hours!
