  1. Hi,

I'm looking for some advice with regards to the water heater in my bathroom. It's right next to my shower and a socket. There was exposed wiring, so I asked my landlord to send an electrician round to sort it out. The attached photos show what it looks like now, but I still don't think it's safe. There seems to be a blue wire behind the water heater and I also don't think the wire from the extractor fan is safe either. Any electricians out there who could take a look at the photos and let me know your thoughts?

    Thanks,

  2. I used to live in Thailand in 2006. My ex-wife and I registered a 1 million Baht company, but this company never traded. I have not been in contact with my wife since 2009 and have no idea where she is. How can I check if the company is now closed? I do not want to have a surprise of any charges related to the business in the future. I've tried calling the Ministry of Commerce, but their help-line is only in Thai and they do not respond to emails. I have the name of the company in English, but not in Thai script. I have no other details.

Could there be any outstanding charges on this business that I am liable for?

    Thanks,
  3. I have been in this situation 2 times. The first time I was ushered through with no problems and the second time I was charged the 500 Baht 1 day fine. It is totally up to the mood of the officer at that time. There is no law that states any over stay of 1 day or of any kind is exempt from the fine. Un like the 90 day report which allows you to report 14 days before and 7 days after your due date.We are talking about 16 bucks here. Is it really worth the time to write about?

More worried about being blacklisted than the money. Thinking of coming back to work here next year and don't want any problems.

    Cheers,

  4. Hi,

My mum's sent my daughter a dress for her birthday from the UK. The dress only cost about 700 Baht and cost my mum about 1,000 Baht to post it to Thailand. I went to the post office in Pattaya to collect it today, but they said I need to go to the post office in Banglamung tomorrow and pay almost 1,000 Baht in tax.

Does anyone have any ideas why the tax is so much?

    Cheers,

  5. I work in Qatar and the place is full of Filipinos working here and earning good money just because they can speak English. 1.7 million people in Qatar with around 300k of these Filipino. Surely it would be good for Thais to learn English as they do in the Philippines so that they to would have access to these jobs.

  6. I was there on Sunday. Over an hour to get through immigration and then 671 Baht for 2 pints of beer and Pad Ka Pow Moo Kai Dow. Last time I was there I went to the same restaurant and it had free wifi, but this time I was told I had to walk 15 minutes to the information centre and register to use the internet!

  7. That's great. I can't be much more specific because I am not allowed to give away the name of the school because I have mentioned how much their housing allowance is. A Moo Ban is exactly what I'm looking for. Do you have the name of the Moo Ban then I can Google it?

    Thanks,

As mentioned before, you need to be a little more specific in relation to what area you will be working in. I rent a three bed townhouse in Lad Phrao, in a very quiet Moo Ban which is close to MRT and easily within that price range.
  8. Hello,

I've been offered a job at an international school in Bangkok, but the housing allowance is only 17,000 Baht a month. This is fine if you are single, but I am married with 2 kids and need a minimum of 2 bedrooms.

Does anyone know of any housing in this price range? I am in Bangkok for a couple of days before I return to my current job in Vietnam. I am looking for somewhere that my 4 year old son can ride his bike around in the evenings, etc.

Also, my son is half-Thai, but he does not see his mother anymore and my wife now is not Thai. I would be taking a pay-cut to come here from Vietnam, but I think it's important that he learns Thai whilst he is young - so I am also looking at Thai townhouse areas of the city. Does anyone know of any within sensible travelling distance of the Sky Train?

I previously lived in Pattaya and rented a Thai style townhouse in a Thai area for about 6,000 Baht a month (I know it will be a lot more in Bangkok), which was great because my son had lots of friends to play outside with - but I can not find the same sort of house/community in Bangkok.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

  9. Hello,

I am going to be divorcing my wife soon and my friend in the UK has recommended a lawyer to me on Soi LK, but he can not remember the name of the company and a Google search has come back with nothing. Does anyone know the name/website of the lawyer on Soi LK. He can only remember her name is Sue or Su.

    Thanks,

    Graham

  10. I taught in Thailand for 2 years with a BA and TEFL qualification. I am currently in the UK doing my PGCE and really appreciate that now I have been told how to teach rather than just the knowledge of language that I learnt on my TEFL course. Now that I have the PGCE I would never work in Thailand again, for the simple fact that the salaries are too low considering I have been to university for 5 years and at the age of 26 I am 1 million Baht in debt due to student loans. I went to a lot of interviews in London a couple of months ago for jobs in Thailand starting August 2008, but the salary is just too low - between 70 - 90,000 Baht per month, so I've accepted a job in Vietnam where the salary is equal to more than I would earn in the UK as a newly qualified teacher, 150,000 Baht+ a month.

  11. My lawyer has just told me this:

"There is one exception, for a lease OR

for a usufruct, when a contract is made between spouses while married,

this contract can be void by the court at the demand of a spouse. (section

    1469)

Can be void while married or when you divorce.

But I've never seen one case using this clause. People don't know about

this clause and nobody will tell you because they want you to do business

with you. I will show it to you when we will meet."

So what is the point of having an usufruct or a lease?
