And she has a 12-year-old son to take care of. These are desperate times for so many Thai people but the millionaires and billionaires of the Thai establishment don't care one bit about people like her and her son.

What's even more criminal is the fact that dad isn't required to help his family.  Deadbeat dads left off the hook far too easily here.

    - no punishment, an old woman ran into me when I was on my bike. Even though I'd already stopped, it happened in a soi, so the vehicle is always wrong. In the end I only got a 4000 baht fine, but once you're waiting for an appearance you cannot cross borders, and immigration wouldn't do anything to help.

makes sense - for here that is.

Unless parents have plans to send their child abroad international schools are a waste of money. They won't give the Thai student a rigorous grounding in Thai language.

Therein lies the reason for sending your child to the best international school you can afford.  Unless you want the child to graduate and head to a top school in Thailand like Chula, Mahidol, etc. - no thanks.

And some do give a rigorous grounding in Thai language.  For some, Thai language is a mandatory ECA in the early years.  That, together with an emphasis on Thai at home (which IMHO is about as equally important an educational environment as school), gives an effective rigorous grounding in the language.

the school my child goes, knows we will change

suddenly when school fee is paid for this semester, they came up, if you want a chance to study next year (no we don't) we - they told me child, not me-  to pay NOW for next semester...

mhhhh... not stupid ... on their own crappy outdated facebook page states, semester 1 (for next year) only have to be paid in May

the class of 25 students my child is in, will have 8 students left ????   woehahahha

"international program" my <deleted>... teachers bored to tell stuck up students to be quiet ...  management that let extravert bully type children to run the school as they please....

You get what you pay for as far as schools are concerned here.  Don't be surprised with mediocre or poor results if you can't pay the piper.

They had 40,000 Canadian dollars in a bedroom stolen. The wife said they were waiting for the poor exchange rate to improve.

Why did nobody pick up on this?  The THB is still near a five year (if not longer) high against the Canadian dollar (.042 dollars per THB, not far off the high of .044).  A few years back you'd only get .036 dollars per HTBB

There are an awful lot of lower class white people in the US, who are very scary people and capable of nearly anything. It seems like a high percentage of the mass killings are perpetuated by them.

It might seem like the case, but the statistics don't support it.  Over 50% of homicide victims are black, the vast majority of whom (90%+) are killed by other blacks.

A visit to your local walmart will expose you to lots of very scary "lower class" white people, but after a few visits you will find that they are harmless.  Try doing the same thing on the streets of Baltimore, St. Louis, Detroit and you'll likely come to a different conclusion.

The infections may be higher bringing the mortality rate down.  Many have recovered from WuFlu after having only mild symptoms and have not reported for treatment and therefore not counted.

Maybe they'll start checking everyone for antibodies to identify how many have recovered.  Of course, I'm joking.

Just to say, because of the varying degrees of infection, we don't really know the actual figures.

researchers in HK have estimated that tens of thousands have already contacted it, bringing the mortality figures much more in the range of normal flu.  this is based on thousands of people who have mild to no symptoms not being diagnosed, people being turned away from overcrowded hospitals and not being diagnosed, and those who just stay at home and don't even bother reporting.

monday we will move to a new news item of the week.

erm seasonal flu (which large parts of the population have antibodies for) has a infected mortality rate of 0.1 %

Hey your only out by a factor of 10..

erm depending on the flu season, the range is all over the place (but I will grant you that it is never near 3%).  as for the 3% figure being thrown about, you're seeing that drop as the days go by (more infections but fewer deaths).

see you here next week when I'm sure this thread will be alive and well - not

World Health Organization Western Pacific update China

The total number of confirmed cases of the 2019 novel coronavirus reported from mainland China to date is 7,711. This includes 1,370 severe cases and 170 people who have died.

the more we learn as time passes, the lower the mortality rate seems to dip.  I wonder what will be the news of the week next week?  anything new on Mr. Golf?

Sure, let's put things into perspective.

8,000 deaths from the flu in the US from 15,000,000 people who contracted the flu.  That's a mortality rate of .05%.

Coronavirus mortality rate is indeterminate but is estimated at roughly 3%.

      Does that help your perspective?

Not much really, but thanks for the effort.  The same sense of pandemonium occurred during SARS which (since we are talking about perspective) had a mortality rate of nearly 10%.  The containment efforts for SARS were laughable, even in the west, yet a vaccine was never discovered and nobody to my knowledge has died of SARS in over a decade.

I love how people are wandering about wearing their "surgical" masks thinking they actually are doing some good.

carry on as usual folks, just be a little more vigilant with hygiene and you'll be fine.

  11. this will be pretty much forgotten next week.  during the time of this coronavirus, multiples more people have died of regular old flu.  the coronavirus has a mortality rate of 3%, whereas flu has a mortality rate of 1%.

last week at this time everyone was ranting and raving about the lopburi murderer, mr. golf.  now, there's no mention of him, at least on the first pages of TV.  the news cycle these days is incredibly short, sad to say.

And it's part of the reason why things are so screwed up here, and ordinary Thais seem unfazed/undeterred by all kinds of violence.

Because that's what they've been put through as children, and so as adults, engaging in the same behavior against others is simply an extension of what they've already endured.

If that were true, then it would not be newsworthy.

Yes, I am sure the robber has licensed the firearm, has a gun license etc. I just hope he has updated his address details so police can drop around.

Unlikely, but the individuals who hold the licenses could be asked to account for their firearms.  For those who no longer have them, then the police may be able to follow a trail to the gunman.  a remote possibility.

  14. Before people move too far away from your actual question by discussing things like facilities and location, the pastoral care and support at Patana we've seen over the past three years with our son's classes has been very good (he started in nursery).  The school seems to put extra effort into making new students and their parents feel welcome.  It is a very big school and can feel overwhelming at times, but the school seems to recognize that and does a great job.  The few times I take the bus with my son to the school has shown me that the students seem to enjoy each others' company and they get along well (much more different from the sullen rides in the school bus I remember as a kid).  The staff keep a close eye on this as well, including bus monitors.  My guess is that NIST is just as attentive (no complaints about pastoral care and support from the few parents I know with kids there), so you really can't make a bad choice based on your criteria.

Interesting that home schooling is available in Thailand - I wasn't aware of that.  It could possibly provide a solution to something I previously gave up on. Maybe someone could advise?

Take a look at the immediately preceding post - the poster does a great job detailing the issues he faced when getting home school approval.
