  3. The threshold of $50,000 or $600,000 depends on whether you have foreign financial assets and either living in the U.S. or outside of the U.S.:

Form 8938, Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets

Specified individuals living in the US:

    • Unmarried individual (or married filing separately): Total value of assets was more than $50,000 on the last day of the tax year, or more than $75,000 at any time during the year.

    • Married individual filing jointly: Total value of assets was more than $100,000 on the last day of the tax year, or more than $150,000 at any time during the year.

Specified individuals living outside the US:

    • Unmarried individual (or married filing separately): Total value of assets was more than $200,000 on the last day of the tax year, or more than $300,000 at any time during the year.

    • Married individual filing jointly: Total value of assets was more than $400,000 on the last day of the tax year, or more than $600,000 at any time during the year.

  4.   If you are a taxpayer living abroad you must file Form 8938 if:

    • You are filing a return other than a joint return and the total value of your specified foreign assets is more than $200,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $300,000 at any time during the year; or
    • You are filing a joint return and the value of your specified foreign asset is more than $400,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $600,000 at any time during the year.

  5. I'm not sure why, maybe it's our local post office's fault, but I never got any of the first nor the second notices of 7162 last year. Hence, I decided to just fill out a blank form and sent it to Wilkes Barr first week of December last year.  That surely didn't work.  On Wednesday (Feb. 01), I received an email from FBU Manila informing me that SSA have not received the barcoded form that they sent me last year, and that I had to fill out a blank form and sent it to them, that's FBU Manila ASAP, to avoid suspension of my benefits.  I hurriedly filled out one and sent it via special courier service yesterday.  I was worried that I won't get paid this February because I knew that suspension of benefits for non-receipt of the form by them starts on February.  However, to my surprise, my monthly benefit was deposited today when I checked my bank account online.  I guess, they must have changed the deadline before suspension is done for this year because some of us really either got the form very late or not at all.  SSA can also be merciful after all.,,LOL!

Got my first 7162 on August 5th and it was dated June 27. I returned it completed to the Thai post office in Chiang Khan, Loei on August 9. Paid 48 baht for an air mail stamp. Got my 2nd notice of the 7162 on November 22. It was dated October 27. This time I sent it back with a tracking number for about 300 baht extra and the post office told me that it would take 5 weeks to reach the states which puts me past the 60 day deadline.

However, I never received either the first or the second 7161 forms for my wife who is designated payee for the SSI benefit for our 15 year old daughter. I sent a request for assistance with the FBU Manila office and here is there reply from 2 days ago.

Our records show that you are scheduled to receive the reporting form SSA-7162 / SSA-7161 this year. The form was initially mailed out in June 2022, and a second mailing went out in early November 2022. If you still haven’t received the form, you may complete the blank form attached to this email and mail it to the appropriate address below.

Woud you be kind enough to give me the blank 7162 form that was attached to your email.  I also have not received form as of today.  thank you.

Just got off the phone with social security. They didn't receive my first form I sent or they think it wasn't scanned into the computer yet. So they recommended to send it again and made a note on my file that I called. So it may help to call them

May I know what was the phone number of SSA you called?  Thanks.

Just FYI, I still have not received my forms 7161 and 7162 here in Khon Kaen.

This is the first time in 7 years I did not receive my forms. I am very concerned.

Any other people still missing forms in Khon Kaen? Thanks

I haven't received mine either.  It also happened to me in 2019.  I did not receive the first notice, but I got the second notice mid October of 2019.

SHOCK!! I just went to the get my payment site and there it is as well. Scheduled to be paid Aug. 19th.

Hope yours now shows it as well.

By the way, what group in FB are you talking about? Guess it's all those missing checks in Thailand from April 24th to May 1st. That obviously was a bad batch that was sent. I know there were also some from May 8th and 15th as well but not as many.

'Glad you got your payment date as well.  'Hope August 19th is the real deal for us.

  11. This is what happened to me as regards to the Stimulus Check:

    1.       Filed my tax return for 2019 with no tax due, so no direct deposit information required

    2.       Tried to access Get My Payment Tool earlier on, to no avail, due to having a foreign address

    3.       Finally able to access Get My Payment Tool after many weeks but too late to provide Direct Deposit information because a check was already mailed to my foreign address on April 24th.

    4.       Have not received any check or letter so far

    5.       Decided to call  1-800-919-9835 at exactly 7 pm which is 7 am in the USA (est) hoping to be the first caller on August 6th

    6.       Was able to get someone (very courteous) on the phone immediately and told her my case, but was transferred to another person who seemed to have the right answer

    7.       Was told that there’s no other option but to initiate a payment trace which would take 6 weeks to process

    8.       Was also told to try calling again before the end of the 6th week (Sept. 17th) to check and see if there’s any result of the trace

    9.       Got into Get My Payment Tool 3 (three) days after my call and the site asked for my Bank Account Information which I provided successfully.

    10.   Got into Get My Payment Tool again today, August 15th and the result is:

  12. IF you're living outside of the US and are able to successfully change your address to a US address and avoid receiving the Form 7162, you, most likely, may NOT avoid receiving summons to appear for jury duty. If that happens, what reason/s can you give to be excused from performing your jury duty?  And again IF you're able to get an excuse ONCE, that doesn't mean you are excused forever.  I would like to get someone's "two cents" on this.

  13. This is the reply I received from US Embassy Manila regarding Form 7162 for 2020:

    FBU Manila <[email protected]>

Thank you for contacting the Social Security Administration's Federal Benefits Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Manila.

    Greetings!

The SSA Questionnaire (Form SSA-7162 and SSA-7161) this year is delayed. You may follow up with us by end of July 2020 for any guidance that may possibly be already by that time.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and enhanced community quarantine in the Philippines, current operations in the Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) are significantly limited. This includes, but are not limited to our telephone system, appointments and mails.

Please be aware that you may have to wait longer than normal for your request to be attended. Please direct all correspondence to [email protected] and avoid sending multiple emails, as this will cause further delays.

    Thank you.
