1. Hi All,

Have you got any recommendations about Buddhist movies/cartoons suitable for young children?

I live in rural Ireland with my wife (Thai), we have two young children age 3 and 5. We want to bring them up in the Buddhist faith. I am looking for any good child friendly material could be used to educate our children in the Buddhist faith. What are your recommendations?

    Regards,

    Jim

PS. Currently there are no Theravada Buddhist temples in Ireland.

  2. "want to sell my home and move to thailand with about 60k=3 MILLION BHT

and with monthly income of approx £600 from uk rented property."

Consider renting your own home in the UK to add to your monthly rental income. Or sell it and buy another property in the UK for renting. This will increase your monthly income and give you a chance to try living in Thailand without losing you assets in the UK. If it does not work out you have the option to return to the UK.

All the advice I have ever read about living in Thailand suggests renting in the area you would like to settle in before you buy.

    Best o f luck,

  3. I do not think this man was the MD of the Red Bull Gmbh Company. I doubt he was high up in the Red Bull management structure, there is no mention of him on the Red Bull website. They are talking about the Red Bull Cliff Diving Qualifiers on the home page but I don’t think he was a contestant.

Does anyone know if this man was the MD of the Red Bull Gmbh Company or the MD of some branch of Red Bull.

I apologise if I am way off the mark here, but when I see posts thanking him for all he has done for extreme sports and I cannot see any strong links that he in fact was the MD of Red Bull, well I have to question...

  4. Hi All,

I like shopping in Bangkok! I like that when I buy a book in a good bookshop they offer to wrap it in a protective sleeve. I like that I can pop into Robinsons and get an instant personal shopping assistant that will carry my purchases and go get the bill ready when it is time to check out. I like that when I stop at a service station for some fuel I get service, I can get the tank full and pay for my purchase without leaving the car!

Contrast that with the service or lack of it I get in many Irish stores. You have to fight to get the shop assistants attention. They are too busy texting their friends or updating their facebook profile to be bothered to assist you.

Compare ordering a drink in a Thai night club and an Irish / UK nightclub. The only thing in common is the drink.

I do not live in Thailand just visit from time to time, but I like it when I do visit.

  5. Hi Thanyaburi Mac,

I just finished reading the PDF at the link you provided. It would appear that if Miss A did get a conviction through the criminal court system, there are good grounds for appeal.

Points A, C and D below look like good grounds from the information that I have at present.

What follows are several examples of Supreme Court rulings in which criminal convictions under the Act have been unsuccessful.

Issuance of the check was for the purpose of a guarantee and not for payment of a direct debt or obligation.

    (Supreme Court Case 988/1970)

Issuance of the check was for payment of a gambling debt, which is an unenforceable debt under Thai law.

    (Supreme Court Case 2493/1984, 1052/1986)

<C> Issuance of the check was for payment of a loan unsupported by a loan agreement.

    (Supreme Court Case 862/1969)

<D> The check was issued without properly dating the check, thereby making a determination of the date of payment uncertain.

    (Supreme Court Case 2039/1980, 1934/1984)

As in the above Supreme Court examples, if the payee is not entitled to pursue a criminal conviction against the drawer due to the failure to satisfy prerequisites under the Act, he or she may still have the right to pursue a civil claim against the drawer.

Having read the article I am feeling a little relieved. It is possibly not as clear cut as Bad Cheque = Criminal. For sure there are issues to be addressed and I will be in contact with a lawyer Monday.

Great that fellow members of Thai Visa can shine a light in what has been a dark 24 hours in our home because of my wife’s worry about this and the possible consequences.

    Thank you.

  6. Hi Lads,

A sincere thank you for your informative replies.

Looks like the next step is to get a good lawyer to do a search make some enquiries and ascertain what the actual facts are.

I do know that the bank account was closed before she left Thailand four years ago. We have been back a number of times since with no difficulty, she was there this time last year.

At the time the cheque was undated. So presumably Miss A presented the cheque for payment in the last year or so.

Thanks to your replies, it does look like it is a serious matter and I need to get all the facts regarding the whole case from the start.

There have been no legal or other type of documents sent to her home regarding this or any other matter. She is in regular contact with her family and they are not aware of any outstanding matters. Her address at the time was not her family home address. In the “tabien baan” her address is her family home address.

    Thanks again,

    Foggy

  7. Hi,

I have used two companies to ship similar goods to Europe, first company was a disaster P. Grace Enterprise Co. Ltd. Part of the load went to the USA, I did get the contact details of where our goods went to in the USA and had to pay the shipping costs to get back the important items from that part of the load. P. Grace Enterprise Co. Ltd. Was paid in advance and did not care.

The other company I have used a few times is Conair who also have a office in Jatujak. Each time they have delivered as promised.

  8. Sorry if I did not make it clear my wife was an investor in the scheme.

That is she lost her money in the scheme when the operator of the scheme disappeared with all the money from the investors. Her problem was that she borrowed money from her friend to invest and was not able to pay it back when the scheme collapsed.

So she was not involved in running the scheme. She was duped by it!

Yes she was naive, even greedy. If you would like to read how people become duped by such schemes just Google Bernard Madoff.

To the best of our knowledge there has been no court action regarding this. And for sure nothing to do with criminal charges.

  9. Hi All,

Thai wife’s passport renewal problem with Embassy apparently because of old personal debt in Thailand.

About 8 years ago my wife borrowed some money from her friend (Miss A.) to invest in what transpired to be a Ponzi Scheme.

This money had been borrowed / returned with interest and borrowed again and reinvested over a number of years. Each time getting a good return from the scheme organiser and each time upping the investment.

Miss A. was aware where the money was been invested but did not want to get involved directly herself. She was happy to get the high return from my wife’s investment.

At the time she gave her friend Miss A. an undated cheque for the amount she borrowed. The Ponzi scheme organiser disappeared with the money. My wife told Miss A she would pay her back when she could.

My wife did pay some of the money back to Miss A. This all happened before I met my wife. We married and now live outside Thailand. She did not continue to pay when she left Thailand.

My wife applied for a new passport at the Thai Embassy. When she did not receive the new passport within the usual time frame she contacted the Embassy and was told there was a problem renewing her passport because of the cheque she had given to Miss A was not honoured by the bank.

I do not have the funds to pay back this debt.

Can someone get a passport renewal blocked in Thailand because of a personal debt?

Any advice on how to proceed from here would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Foggy

  10. Hi All,

Thank you for your replies. Just to clarify a couple of points. I am not trying to teach the older children to speak Thai. My wife speaks very good English, she does not speak English to the young children.

We live in a rural town in Ireland with only a few Thai / Irish couples in the area. Those that do have children are not interested in teaching them Thai. There is no Thai temple or monks in Ireland, some come to Dublin from the UK a couple of times a year.

We have Thai cartoons on dvd and some other kids educational stuff but it is not great. Last trip I was hoping to find something like a Thai “Sesame Street” but no luck.

If anyone knows of any good dvd type Thai educational material please let me know.

  11. <deleted>, <deleted>, <deleted>,

There are at least 4 four types of internet viewer / contributor.

Ego heads- who just want attention and post any drivel to get attention.

Those who genuinely share and want feed back.

Those who don’t post but want to learn or at least get a point of view.

All others, for whatever ever reason.

On some forms I just read because I want to learn, on others I feel confident enough to post.

I am reminded of the quote “It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt”

Scams, Sin Sot, Falang Word, Mia Thai Etc The 1% rule,

    <deleted>, <deleted>, <deleted>, AGAIN

Why do you throw this lot together? Sin Sot is a local curtail issue.....

I ask myself is there any point in me arguing the point.

    Foggy,

  12. Hi All,

I am looking for any tips / advice on helping my children living in “Farang-land” speak Thai.

My wife speaks only Thai to our two children age 2y 8m & 1y 3m.

My wife does not work outside the home, so she is with them 24/7.

I speak English and the little Thai I know to them.

My two children (age 21y & 14y) from 1st marriage who live with us speak only English.

They are exposed to English and Thai TV.

What are your experiences, have you any advice?

    Have a happy,

    Foggy

  13. Hi,

Having furniture made in any factory is a hands on task. When you find a factory willing to make it for you it is important that they make a sample piece for you to sign off on. This will usually cost you a lot more than the unit price. Then you will be expected to pay a deposit for the manufacture of the units. If you are local to the factory you may have the option to inspect the production and check that they are indeed making them to your specifications. The problems arise when production is finished and it is not exactly what you ordered. You have paid a sizable deposit and it appears something got lost in translation!

You are always better of finding a factory that already makes what you want and buy from their regular production.

In the past I bought a lot of furniture in Thailand for export. It is not as easy as it seams. Many companies in Baan Tawai are not licensed to work with and sell native hard woods. And all containers have to be fumigated and certified before leaving Thailand.

I did deal with a company in Chiang Mai called Thaweephan phone +66 53 297436 it has been many years so I don’t know if they still exist, but they were good and did deliver what was ordered and on time.

If you are in BKK go to the Thailand Furniture Mart.

“Thailand Furniture Mart in total is 11,780 square meters in area, and includes 74 exhibiting rooms on three floors, the exhibition space totalling 6,100 square meters. There are at present 72 companies represented.

Thailand Furniture Mart is in the Ninth Tower, 33/2-3 Rama 9 Road, Bangkok. Service hours are:

Monday-Friday 09.00-17.00 hrs. (business negotiations and ordering only)

Saturday 09.00-18.00 hrs. (open for walk-in buyers)

    Telephone: 66 25116020 to 30, 66 25137070, 66 25131909 to 15 extension 707, 717, 719 “

    Best of luck,

    Regards

    Foggy.

  14. Hi All,

Thanks for your replies, especially those who “got” what I was on about.

In my original post I said I let him know in no uncertain terms that kind of talk was not acceptable. What I did not say was that he apologized for his comment. He rents a property from me and is usually on every few weeks looking for some small thing or other, I don’t expect to hear from him for some time now and he knows he won’t get much cooperation from me for a while to come.

If he was ten or fifteen years younger I would have considered hitting him, but as it stands I would have more to lose if I did assault him.

By the way there is not a significant age difference between me and my wife but even if there was it does not give anyone the right to pass such comments.

I do believe that if someone disrespects my wife that I should not let it go or just laugh it off as if they have a right to do that because she is Thai.

This is the first time this happened to me in 4 years and when I thought about it after I was curious to know how some of you would react.
