  1. I have seen for myself in Bangkok, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok etc. how few people wear helmets while riding. I have a suggestion to reduce this horrendous road toll. It would be cheaper for the Government to give all riders a helmet. Then start fining them 500 baht if they don't wear one when they stop at traffic lights
  2. Interesting discussion. So Smoke Free rooms should return at BKK. There used to be one at about Gate 30 on departure and halfway in on arrival. I was a non smoker until I was 28 in 1982 when I met a smoking gal in Munich. Then I married a heavy smoker 10 years later. I gave up again last year in May, mainly due to the cost of $30+ (or about 600B) for 20 cigs, after travelling to Japan for a ski holiday. Smoking rooms such as in Taiwan in transit and all throughout Japan both at airports and rail stations, are a great boon for the smokers and avoid passive smoking. There is even one at Niseko ski resort! Even better is the outdoor areas such as at Changi. There's even one in Sydney tucked away at near aisle one but not once through security. Nobody mentioned that at Suvarnabhumi every smokes just outside the terminal even where it says No Smoking 5000B fine! Not sure where the 100% SmokeFree label came from other than AOT and TAT - like so many things in the Land of Smokers! Sure Smoke Rooms will cause some to smell like an ashtray but can't see much difference between smoking before security and after for that smell to be evident. It takes hours to dissipate.
  3. Have you met my wife? Sex once a month 555 My trial period was great until she got pregnant 😞 Why do I stay? I have a 5yo boy who was my 1st child at 65!
  4. As a rider and driver with 50+ years experience driving in many countries and conditions I know exactly why this happened. Ignoring the legality of the bike's use of the road - you have to be extraordinarily unlucky to get booked in Thailand!! 1. The driver did not check the mirror and turn head before the lane change I am always aware what is behind me on the right - so this driver was careless 2. the rider was riding the line between the 2nd and 3rd lane as this is where the gap is but if you do that you have to be acutely aware of the movement of cars around you and watch for the signs of change 3. if lane splitting at speed you have to move back quickly to the centre of the lane after the overtake - doing this would have avoided the collision but he was slow and imprecise in the movement on the video assuming all the cars would stay in place The moral of this is if moving through the traffic like this you have to have 360 degree radar or you will get hit Drivers should watch their mirrors for bikes coming from behind Although some of the idiots I have seen on bikes in Thailand go so fast to overtake it is a miracle they survive My opinion is both were at fault and the rider was very lucky indeed
  5. We went to Chiang Mai/Rai a couple of years ago and although not as bad as this year it was uncomfortable. This year in Khao Kho where we live, a long way from Chiang Mai, the sun turns orange from 4pm due to the smoke from everybody burning. This starts in January and continues until the rains come in April/May - still no rain to date! The only solution is for farmers to plough last season's crops back in as we do in Australia. But the small farmers can't afford such luxury as a tractor and the big Agra farms say why should we bother - everybody else is doing it! Solution: fine/tax big Agra and donate a tractor to the small farmers allowing them to avoid burning
  6. Yes the statistics published are conveniently prompt with little connection with reality but rather a PR exercise. We did a lot of crawling at 10-20km/h on route 4 south as it's under construction for 20 years I'm told! Having driven on Wednesday from Khao Kho to Bangkok and then on Thursday to Prachuap Kiri Khan (past Hua Hin) I was horrified at how many near accidents occurred. 1. because idiots insist on cutting right from the left lane because you are waiting in line with other cars but they are too important to wait so they try to hit your left bumper to make a gap. I am good enough to avoid a collision and give up in disgust but I'll bet many are not prepared to give in resulting in accidents 2. because the "roadwork ahead" signs are none existent! Travelling at 100-120km/h in traffic past trucks the last thing you need on a bend is traffic almost stopped before the merge left sign with no prior signage to indicate a roadwork hazard is approaching.
