I just finished a 1 month course at Text and Talk and it was the English school from hel_l!
the evaluators for the practice teaching would each tell you something either different or directly contradictory. And you would be graded on that basis.
you couldn't get a straight answer from the teacher, when you could hear him.
they had 13 people in the class and it was complete chaos.
many of the students were complaining, but not so any teacher or school offical could hear them.
be aware that you will receive a grade for the course, which goes on your TEFL certificate. The head of the school told us today that 85% of the students get a "C" grade. Also, if you have no teaching experience, that goes on your certificate as well.
one caveat, their is an official there by the name of Leigh (don't know if thats spelt correctly) who is absolutely great. the first day i asked about a cab route and by the end of the day he came back with hand drawn maps and thai text to show the driver. all of my experiences with him were similiar. he seemed very, very out of place there!

Sam, just for other Bangkokites information, does this vet make housecalls just in certain areas? Hows his English?
Sounds like a great vet, I believe animals can sense a sympathetic soul.
Sorry, I didn't notice your post until I came in to look at Sheryl's post.
I'm not sure exactly where he makes house calls, I would think its anywhere.
His English is excellent.
To me one of the most important aspects of a Vet is how they relate to animals.
Also, the animal hospital wanted to all kinds of tests, he could have said the same thing or something similar to make more money. He didn't.

What is the status of veterinary care in Thailand? I know that standards of animal care are a little different there than in the US/Aus/western Europe, but are there many good vets? Will they make house calls? (I'm probably not going to have a car for a while). What can I expect to pay for a visit?
a few weeks ago i found a very good vet who makes house calls: Ari Pet Hospital, Matee Tangpanit. DVM. 02-271-3182. i first brought my cat to Thong Lo Animal Hospital, and they wanted to keep him for a week or so for all kinds of tests. also, this particular cat is very high strung, and completely freaks out when ever i take him to the vet, let alone leave him there.
i was lucky to find the above Vets # and he came to the house (along with 2 assistants). he also informed me that the cat needed special cat food, water and some vitamins, and did not need a whole battery of tests, or a trip to the hospital. the cat is now back to his old self.
also, i should mention that when the Vet came into my apartment, the cat was out on the balcony, and when he saw Mr. Maytee, came in and walked right up to him. which was unusal for him. and then hung out near him while we were talking. hope this helps anyone looking for a vet. i spent 2 exausting weeks looking for one.

Some feedback. I went to Bumrungrad for PT. There is one particular therapist who is extraordinary. In the past, many doctors had mentioned knee replacements to me. This therapist, Miss Rungnapa had a miraculous effect on my knee. In only 1.5 weeks the pain level has gone down significantly, even with a reduced level of pain killers (I used to take 2 Alleve 2 times a day, now I take 1 pill 2 times a day, or only 1 pill a day). However, there was another therapist I saw there for one visit who was fairly ineffectual.

I think this is one of these Thai situations I'll never unravel entirely. They are farmers from Issan. I finally talked to the doctor myself last week. It turns out that the father did have a serious kidney problem (he's 74), which was very treatable with medication. The letter called him back to the hospital for that. As for the cancer, the doctor had told them he was pre-cancerous (a high blood reading) (he's a smoker), so maybe the family was trying to scare him into not smoking. I think the doctor was trying to get their attention with the pre-cancerous talk.
Whew!
As the Thais say, "Mai phen lai".

it gets stranger and stranger. got the father to Bunradgrad along with his son's wife, and another son. after we checked in at the doctor's station on the 2nd floor (he had seen us 2 weeks earlier), the Thai medical secretaries looked up his name, and then started to inform me that there was nothing wrong with him. Of course I figured this must be the usual Thai-Falang misunderstanding so I started politely giving them the 3rd degree. They show me all the reports, and especially, the radiology report. the father was normal. No cancer.
Then I had them ask the family a series of questions. Seems no one thought the father had cancer, and no one had told him he had cancer. No one knew of a letter sent to the family from the hospital regarding cancer. The good news was my ex-father in law, a farmer from Chaiyaphum, did not have lung cancer. (I've known him for about 15 years and have grown very fond of both him and his wife. The bad news is it appears someone in the family was out to get some money. This is going to be an interesting mystery to unravel.
Anyone know of a reliable private investing company?
Also, I apologize for wasting everyone's time, although I have to admit, I'm very glad he doesn't have cancer.

Actually, I took him to Bungradgrad for their comprehensive checkup 2 weeks ago, and we are suppose to go back there tomorrow for a first consultation about their diagnosis and treatment plan (I just got back after 2 weeks in the US tonight). I am familiar with Cancer, and will probably use Bungradgrad as the second opinion. Later I'll take him to Samitivej, maybe even also to Bangkok hospital later on for an additional opinion. Lung cancer is one of the worst, and from what I have gleaned so far, it all pretty much depends on how early they caught it, and of course if it has matasticized. If it is advanced, then we'll just focus on making things as comfortable for him as possible.
The whole family met me at the airport tonight, and the father was there, pleasant, friendly and smiling as though he didn't have a care in the world.
Again, thanks for all your help. Your information has been extremely valuable, and you may very well have saved many years of his life, or at the least avoided alot of discomfort, pain and suffering for him.

Never heard of one offered in Thailand in English - interested to know if it's possible though.
I know there are many computer programs for BA and Masters taught in English in Thailand.
Tomorrow i'll look for the links to many Thai universities that teach in English.

I was in an apartment in Ruamsuk condo, in Sukhumvit Soi 26 (next to the golf driving range) and was allowed to keep cats.
Thanks for the information. It looks a little expensive, 100,00 Baht/month.
are you in IT?

Its amazing how character asassination happens on websites. If you went to Dr. Maytee for all this time, why would you bring your pet to see someone else there? My cats are like my children, and he is the only person there I would think of seeing them. He saved one cats life when an animal hospital, that I will leave unnamed, wanted to take the very old, high strung cat in for a week of observation and tests. I don't think he would have survived. Dr. Maytee made a house call and told me to feed him certain cat food and give him vitamin paste. That was a year ago and the cat is fine. Also, when he comes to see them they all go right up to him. (Even one time after he took one cat's blood).
I love the "other little incidents". Powerful arguement there. There were many times he could have done many other services which I asked about, but he said were unnecessary.
