For those of You following this. T9days update is he has found work and is going to earn what he needs to get home and he hopes to be home by Xmas. He's said the police are no longer looking for him. I suspect the real story is he did something wrong at work, got the sack and had no money to get home and no means to make the money. So he's ramped up his woe is me tale to encourage mum to beg borrow or steal to get him home.
Thank you to everyone that gave advice. It really did help her knowing all the options available.

I am female with my own family. I've even mentioned my own husband having a car accident which is why I have no available funds.
Where have you got this lover situation from. As stated in my op, I am his mum's friend nothing more.

I’m sure the authorities would prefer him doing that if it gets him out of the country

He was working for a language school under the radar. When he was accused of stealing the owner found out and sacked him.
It sounds like he is now pretty much staying indoors to avoid the police.
There's been no contact today, so for all we know the police could have found him. His mum has decided if she can get any money together it will have to go through the embassy because she doesn't trust him.
For those thinking I'm a scam see my above post. I came for nothing but advice. For those calling me a troll, a visa forum isn't exactly the most exciting place to troll ????

Now, I do realize that times are dire in Brexitland, but still, that isn't really a large amount. What if he had had a motorbike accident instead? No insurance, I'd bet.
Coming from such a poor background, he probably shouldn't have traveled to a far-away country in the first place. Now that he's there and kind of stuck, I'd try to get to the bottom of that police matter first - if he's wanted, any money spent on a ticket out just goes to waste.
Life happens my husband almost died in a car crash so finances are tight. Like I said while I want to support my friend, I'm not prepared to get into debt to do so.
Had he not burnt a lot of bridges in the UK there would be others that would help him, he can't go back and unburn those bridges now though.

One advantage to working through the British Embassy is that, while they will not provide money, they will be able to verify his situation and actual needs. I find it very suspicious that he refuses to contact them.
In normal circumstances I'd agree with you but I did find a comment from him on a blog when googling basically asking if the embassy would get him home. So I do believe in this instance at least wants to get home rather than <deleted> it up the wall.
For those saying sell sofas, tv's ect, you don't know the family circumstances. The money isn't there, even if the house was stripped bare. £800 might not seem a lot to many but to others it really can be.
I do a lot of voluntary work with homeless people, I've known people end up on the streets because they haven't been able to get a couple of hundred quid together.

How is it the kid doesn’t have the return airfare ticket portion? Aren’t they still good but have to pay a fee change? Or did he mess that up?
He didn't have a return ticket so he messed that up too.

Sheryl you're summery of him is 100% accurate unfortunately. I also agree with you about the stint in a Thai prison and IDC.
We've no idea if the police just want to speak to him or if there's a warrant for his arrest. He isn't the most truthful in the best of circumstances.

He must now go south of Bangkok to the seaport at Laem Chabang. Sneak onto a British freighter and stowaway until home. Will have to survive on rats and rainwater for 30 days transit time.
I'm half tempted to give him this advice but then he was too lazy to go to border hop so the chances of effort from him are slim ????

The info wasn't available when I originally posted ????
Why am I not mum's friend...because I refuse to put my family into debt for her son? If I wasn't her friend I wouldn't have posted here or even found this forum to figure out what the options were and I certainly wouldn't have left my warm house to dive to her this evening to go through them all with her ????

Mum is my friend but I'm not in a financial position to help, not that it's any of your business. I really don't like her son, so I'm certainly not going to get into debt to help him.
His friends in the UK won't help, he left owning most of them cash. I've since found out a gofundme was set up 2 or 3 days ago, not one person has donated.
The police are apparently looking for him, hence his sudden urgency for money to come home. He was apparently accused of theft and the police were informed. He claims he's innocent but he's lost his job and didn't save any cash from the job.
As it stands with the new information there's nothing she can do because he's refusing to get advice from the British embassy. He thinks he can turn up at the airport, pay the fine and board the flight home. We don't think that's going to be a option now.

Tell her to contact the British Embassy. At one time they would issue a secured loan. I don't know if they still offer it or if they will offer it if he isn't yet in IDC.
Thank you, I wasn't expecting them to cover the cost of his flight and him not pay it back. We'll be contacting them tomorrow anyway. I'm not even sure she has the full story from him so I am hoping I can be there when he next makes contact.

Overstay not as easy peazy as it used to be.
Tell him to stay put where he is, don't get arrested, book him a flight home. Borrow 20,000 Baht (equivalent) and send to him for potential max fine on the way out of the airport.
It's the borrowing the 20000 baht and flight money that is the issue. His mum simply doesn't have it and isn't in a position to borrow it, there is nobody else he can ask (his father passed away when he was a child). For me I'd just leave him where he is to deal with the consequences of his actions but his poor mum is beside herself with worry. I'm just trying to get a idea of all options to figure out in the circumstances which is the best one/cheapest for his mum because ultimately even if she has to save for months that's where any money will come from.

Those long term stayers are there because they dont have travel documents and cannot get them or dont want to leave , rather than not being able to pay .
I do believe that every day you spend in IDC, 200 Baht gets taken off your overstay fine
From what I have read the 200 baht is taken off the fine for every day you spend in prison then you move to the IDC.

Hi all, my friends son went to Thailand at the end of last year to work. He's kept in touch and his life there seemed great. He's been in touch this week and told her he has in fact overstayed his visa by more than 90 days (we're not sure exactly how long or what kind of visa he even had but I'm guessing he foolishly went there on a tourist visa). He has asked her for £800 to pay for a flight home and his fine. She simply doesn't have that kind of money nor can she get hold of it, it would take her months to save. His friend is currently feeding him and giving him somewhere to stay but I get the feeling he has asked for help now because he has out stayed his welcome.
I've read a thread on here from 2014 regarding handing himself in and getting a reduced fine in court, is this information still correct? We're hoping that is a option and she can cover the fine but we need to speak to the British embassy too to see if they help with a deportation flight (even if he has to pay them back on his return).
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give.

He had a friend already working for the school/agency (I'm not sure which it is) he originally worked for. He was foolish ever getting on that plane!
