I think it should be the same as I was trying to learn English language and all my teachers told me that we should find more opportunity to use English.

You can learn from books as well but you need to choose ones having CD/DVD.

I think Thaivisa website is good for people who is studying Thai language as well.

So I'm in the barbers chair and the กระเทย is cutting away, and I'm being forced to listen to that horrible music called American Country Music, anyway, so to start our chit-chat off, I ask

1. คุณชอบลุกทุ่งฟรั่งไหม - and all I got was a confused look, should I have used เพลงของคนชนบท? What should I use?

2. After finishing with the hair cut I'm off to Tesco's for some shopping, and come across a family walking and one of their children is sitting in the shopping cart. I of course can't resist and come out with

ขอโทษครับดัวนี้(pointing to child in cart)คุณซื้อที่ไหน - all four of the family, including grandma, stopped and had dead-serious looks on their faces. Guess that humor didn't go cross-culture. I backed away humbly.

For the second I think u is trying to play with the kid, ตัวนี้ is for things and animals. we don't use it for human.

You can use "เด็กคนนี้"( Dek Khon nee) - this child. it's better.

You can ask like "เด็กคนนี้ซื้อมาจากไหนครับ"

sedation = use drug to clam someone = การทำให้สงบ, สงบประสาท

sedate = ทำให้สงบ

I learn Thai since I was young because I'm Thai.

When I learn English, people told me that it's good to find opportunity to talk with native English speakers.

However, if I cannot find one, there are some meterials like listing to news, movies, cartoon and so on in English.

I think it does work well.

there are some books teaching Thai as well.

If you want to learn Thai, just try to talk some Thais in your workplaces or we can be friend.

You should enrolls an English lesson for her. She will have her friends and homeworks. If her english is not good, she might get the basic or elementary class but it 's much better than staying at home and no improve in her english skills.

I think if your wife is not so quite and shy. she can ask information like where is thai video shop or thai community in there from every Thai restuarant.

Actually, Thai nickname has given by the parent and relatives when the kid was born. It can mean anything in Thai word such as ปู - poo(crab) นก-nok(bird) ไก่-Kai(chicken). I have some friends called "Tieng"- เตียง(mean a bed). someone is back but the parent call ขาว Kaw(white). Some use English words such as Apple, Bird, Nut, CoCo, Cheery, Mint.

However, many people change nickname when they grown up and in School. My friend named หมา (i don't know how to pronounce in English but it mean "a dog"). Many friends was laughing at his name everytime he said so he change it to be "Chai"(from his name - Chatchai). Then friends call "Chai" while his parent and relatives still call หมา

One of my friend name is Nitthaya. She said her nickname is นิต -Nit. so I asked her to check the name in English dictionary. She changes to write her nickname is Nith since then because as u know that "Nit" mean Egg or young of an insect parasitic on mammals especially a sucking louse; often attached to a hair or item of clothes

many Thais are shy to speak in English. my family and friend dont' speak with me in English as well. One of my English teacher teachs me like that as well coz it's the way to get more opportunity to use English.

so i change to watch TV, VCD, DVD and news in English version and repeat some sentenses after listening. recorder is still work too i think. just record when we speak and compared to the sentense that we hear from tape or CD.

most of Thais scared to speak English because they are stick with English tense and English gramma. just scare to make mistakes.

i went to study in Australia so i think finding opportunity to use English skills as much as we can is the best way. My teacher said just keep talking if it's wrong today. u remember and make the right one tomorrow.

It's correct. the word "วิเศษณ์" works as adverb or adjective in English. We don't have the the word "คุณศัพท์" in Thai gramma. คุณศัพท์ is use for the translation of adjective in English-Thai dictionary.

In Thai gramma, we have only วิเศษณ์ (a words or group of words which is used as adverb or adjective

if วิเศษณ์ works as an adverb,we can called especially กริยาวิเศษณ์

I thought Richard mean about about the different between verb and adjective, not adjective vs adverbs.

The two bookes u use are good reference for Thai gramma.

Verbs and Adjectives in Thai language are not the same. However, I accepted that many Thais use them incorrectly because most of Thai speak Thai only. We don't use English is our first language.

In Thai, คุณศัพท์ kunnasup mean adjective and กริยา kriya mean verb. It's diferent.

As in English "beautiful" is adjective, in Thai, "สวย suay" is adjective as well.

As in English "like" can be verb, in Thai, "ชอบ chob" is also verb.

when u want to say " i like beautiful women", u can say " chan/phom chob puying suay"

chan/phom = I

chob(verb) = like

puyin(noun) = women

suay(adj) = beautiful.

but the point is normally we don't use "is" or "do" in Thai sentense so some Thais don't know how to use it.

For example.

I'm beautiful girl = chan phen khon suay

(chan=I, phen= is,am,are, Khon = human, suay = beautiful)

this sentence is the same stucture as English,right?

however, u can said I'm beautiful = chan suay

For this sentence, u will see that no "is" in the Thai sentense.

so I think Thais who don't use English or practise it oftenly can get confused how to use "to do" and "to be".

ทะเยอทะยาน (tayer tayan) mean ambition. ขยัน (kayan) is only hardworking. Some people are "kayan"(working hard everyday). Just for life but not have ambition.

u're right, Sabaijai. We use a lot for a non-present third party. but becareful about ur lovely friend(the second party) hehee. she might told the third party like, " Aiy Farang wa ther ting tong" mean "the foriegner said u are Ting Tong" lol. sorry for my impolite sentence.

for me,it seem impolite as well. However, we use oftenly with very closed friends(for agree with something they said) or some boring persons(for get them stop talking). It's up to how to pronouce and what is the speaker's mood.

However, it's not a word that a nice guy should say to a woman(in my oppinion)

I'm looking for Thai or western foods. Italian food is ok as well because one of my friends is Italian. the restuarant might be in Kaosan Road or sukhumvit areas. It can be others where we can go by car and have a car park.
