  1. ... they might also sell yeast, also saw brewers yeast tablets in a health food shop somewhere.

That yeast is probably already dead.If you are planning on actually drinking home made cider you really need to use a decent ale or wine yeast.Have someone back home mail you some dried yeast from a homebrew shop. It's cheap and easy to mail.

AVOID BAKERS YEAST LIKE THE PLAGUE!

  2. Iran is made into a scapegoat by the US, just like Iraq was a only a few years ago. They have the rights to develop nuclear power as any other coutnry on Earth, inlcuding Thailand, and if they want to keep the US at bay, they'd better develop a bomb, too.

I feel like I wandered into the backpacker forum :D

Why would a country that has more oil than they know what to do with want to go through the trouble and expense of developing a peaceful nuclear program.Oh wait Iran already announced its nuclear weapons program to the world.

"if they(Thailand) want to keep the US at bay, they'd better develop a bomb, too."

Wow! You need to lay off of those happy shakes, turn off your computer and get out of the house more :o

  3. Research shows killing doesn't work. If you find factual evidence to the contrary, please post it.

Is voodoo a big problem in Thailand?

I have never had to kill any dogs in Thailand but the ones that I've killed in Laos, Vietnam and Texas all remained dead after I killed them.

That's right folks not a single animal came back as a zombie.

Neutered animals still BITE, SH*T, and EAT GARBAGE. Those are still facts.

As for the animal friendly studies that claim dead dogs are as troublesome as live ones,

I can show you research linking instant coffee to global warming :o

  4. I'm in Chiangmai and have thought about kickstarting a campaign that might help clean the air,

If you are serious about this you should try and find some locals that are interested in your cause.

That way you won't come across as just another farang telling Thai people how to live.

    Just a suggestion....

  5. Please take the time to read the original post, or do a little research, you will come to find why that wont work. It has been tried, and failed. Sterilization has been proven efffective.

I read the post and I have to disagree.

The dogs have to be captured to be sterilized.Once they are captured the can be killed.Once they are killed they are no longer a nuisance or a health hazard. The money earmarked to make mules out of stray dogs can used to capture and kill more dogs.

I've done the math and my calculations show that dead dogs bite less adults and children than fixed dogs.

Also dead dog are considerably less likely to spread diseases such as rabies.

You are obviously a compassionate person who wants to help animals and I congradulate your good intentions.

I just think that a country like Thailand would be better off using it's limited resources taking care of it's human beings

    (children in particular).

  6. I recently read "An Inconvenient Truth", One of my American friends dismissed it as "Pinkie Propaganda".

Look at the facts over the last 50 years...

I agree with your friend it's propaganda.

You can't cherry pick data and call it science.

As far as the the last 50 years go, well there is this new science called geology you should look into :D

I mean what, the earth is 5 billion years old, and on it's third atmosphere? We came out of 400 years of global cooling

that ended in around 1850 so I would expect a slight warming trend after that. It's interesting that temperatures

dropped from 1920-1940.Over the past 100 thousand years the earth has experienced at least four abrupt climate changes.

To look at the "facts" over the past 50 years and assume that disaster is looming is absurd.

Global warming is a crack pot theory based on tabloid science. If you hand pick your data and intentionally ignore all of the

inconvienent truth you could claim that the earth may have warmed 1 degree over the past hundred years.

Twenty years ago the eco-facists were predicting we were on our way to a nuclear winter from all of the air pollution.

You people should really make up your mind :o Are you aware that Anartica is getting colder? With the exception of one ice shelf

(about 2 percent of Anartica) that has been melting for the past 6000 years.

I suppose that you believe cavemen burning their fires in caves ended the last ice age?

Or perhaps that musket fire in the American Civil War ended the 400 years of global cooling that ended in the 19th century?

Don't get me wrong I think reducing pollution is a good thing. All I'm saying is that there is zero evidence that we human beings can change the earths climate. If global warming is such a such a sound theory why is there no hard science to back it up?

  7. I lost almost thirty pounds on my version of a low carb diet, so I understand your dilema.

The best thing to do is to cook your own food.

You can eat a lot of stir fry items, just skip the rice.

Or have a a bit of brown rice instead.

    Pad Thai is right out

Drink liquor and wine and avoid Gods gift to man (beer).

When I was in Laos I made friend with a family that owned a restaurant. SInce I ate there almost everyday they were willing to altered menu items at my request. The would make me a small batch of brown rice and they would use the cooking oil that I supplied. In addition to my loyal patronage I also taught them how to make A-2-fay and gumbo.

You can also look at a Thai cook book and you can make your own modifications.

If you are going to be in LOS for a while you might try going native.Eat nothing but Thai food.Cook with brown rice and enjoy noodles sparingly and TOTALLY AVOID farang food (soft drinks especially).

  8. Instant coffee is pure concentrated evil.It funds terrorism and causes global warming.

All fatal accidents at NASA were the result of astronauts consuming instant coffee

There is compelling evidence that the Khmer Rhouge atrocities were fueled by instant coffee

    Hitler drank instant coffee.

But Seriously: If you have hot water for brown, vile, instant, coffee flavoured swill, why not use a coffee press?

  9. Has anyone tried to grow Jalapenos in Thailand?

    Barry

Many moons ago back when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

Peppers do very well in SEA.The strains grown in Vietnam tend to be hotter than the ones grown in the US.

Since there isn't any serious cold weather your pepper plants will not die in the winter but will keep growing.

Avoid planting and replanting where you have previously grown nightshades (if possible).Add some flowers to

attract bees.I usually won't harvest my Jalapenos until they turn a lovely shade of Whore of Babylon Red.

My pepper plants did much better in LOS than here in the Texas Republic.

  10. If you have a little extra money in your pocket you can pick up and extra refrigerator and install an external theromstat to keep the temperature at 55F.They are very popular with home brewers here in the US.

I usually like to pitch Champagne Yeast when I make cider at room temperature.

If you ferment in a fridge you might consider using Lager yeast.

  11. In australia studying has 2 prices for nationals and international student.

Its more then double, its more like 6 times higher for international students.

Similar situation here in the US.

Since international students and their families don't generally pay taxes I really don't a have a problem with higher tuition.

I suspect that internation students in OZ do not pay higher prices for food, shoes, movie tickets, etc.

Since I've never paid a dime in taxes to the government of Austalia I would expect to pay higher tuition than a citizen of NSW.
