Why not watch it for free, plenty of sites to stream for free.

This is a good idea; at first, I thought you were referring to some of the European sites that stream NFL games, which I had tried before, with unsatisfactory results. But, now I see there are a number of American sites that you can access with a VPN, to watch games live. So, my thinking now is live stream the games until mid-season, and if the Jaguars are having a good season (Hey, it could happen!), I could always purchase a subscription then, when it's half-price.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I do the same, and maybe watch the Monday night game if I decide to wake up early....lol.  Still 16 games plus the playoffs makes it very cheap really.

I used to subscribe to the "Regular season only" Gamepass, which cost $140/year; that seemed reasonable. I could have opted for the "Only My Team" subscription, where you only have access to your own selected team's games; as I recall, that option was $99/year. But, starting a few years ago, the NFL eliminated the economy packages, and forced everyone onto the full service, most expensive subscription, around $200/year. And that seemed excessive. I've tried the more expensive cable TV sports packages, but since my team (Jaguars) is not one of the popular teams, I might only get to watch 2 to 4 games a year. I'd also tried the free streaming sites, particularly one originating in Europe, but found them to be generally low quality. Plus, I often found they wouldn't stream my team's games at all, since again, my team isn't popular. Not to mention, you often had color commentary in French, Bulgarian, Chinese, or some other language; and when you could watch, you had to watch live.

As I said, I was OK with paying $140/year, but $200 seems excessive.

  3. The idea is, a total of three or four people share a subscription to NFL Gamepass. One person subscribes, and obtains a user id/password, and then shares it with the others. If two or more people sign on at the same time, the first person who signs on, will be signed off automatically; but I have to believe, if that happened repeatedly, the NFL would cancel your subscription, and no refund would be given. For that reason, it's vital for the people sharing the subscription to communicate with the others, via email preferably, to reserve a time when you want to access Gamepass, to ensure only one person is signed on at a time. Once you have the user id/password, you can use this anywhere there is an internet connection. So, for instance, the Giants were playing the Jaguars (my team) one year; a friend of mine was a Giants fan, and so we arranged to meet at The Pub a day or two after the game had been played. We carefully avoided the internet for the game results, and were able to watch the game on a large screen TV, just as if we were watching the game at home. The entertainment value of a game is spoiled, if you know the outcome before the game starts, is the idea.

A subscription is around $200 USD, or roughly, 6,000 Baht. If three people shared that, it would come to 2,000 Baht each. If four people shared, it would be 1,500 Baht each. In theory, you could have many more people sharing; there are plenty of hours in a week, after all. But, as a practical matter, everyone would want to watch around the same time, within a day or so of the game date; so to prevent conflict, three or four people is optimal. You can watch any game at any time, even watch games from years prior, 24/7, whenever you desire.

  4. Is anyone interested in sharing a subscription to NFL Gamepass? I would like to find two, or possibly three, other people who would like to share a subscription. We would have to communicate by email, what time we would want to watch a game, or access their other services.

  5. I would say, plan to pursue an interest: chess, bridge, golf, writing - whatever. You should be able to find like-minded people online, and through this forum, as well as in person once you arrive. This way, you'll have something to fill your time, as well as a means of meeting people who don't, to put it nicely, spend all day drinking and chasing economical prostitutes.

I heartily agree that you should rent for the first month, or few months, till you get an idea of where you want to live, and how you want to spend your time. There are many places around Chiang Mai where you can find affordable rents. One I might suggest, is The Pub, on Huay Kaew road, opposite the new Maya shopping mall (which was already recommended). An American acquaintance stayed there last year, and said he paid 10,000 Baht (a little over $300 US) per month.

  6. I've a question -

An electric RC helicopter crash landed in our yard, possibly Monday, 29 July 2013, or Tuesday, 30 July 2013. I discovered it (I believe), Tuesday morning between 6:00 and 6:30 am. It doesn't appear to be badly damaged.

I don't find any identifying marks or ID on it, other that the numbers on the fuselage, which are probably not unique.

I tried calling some phone numbers I found on rcthai.net, but haven't gotten through to anyone.

Somebody must be missing a helicopter; feel free to PM me to claim it (or, if you have any advice or thoughts on finding the owner.)

    Thanks.

  7. I didn't realize this thread was still active. Yes, we have a chess club in Chiang Mai now. We've been meeting at The Pub on Huay Kaew continuously for nearly two years now. We meet on Wednesdays, starting at 7:00 pm.

If you need boards, sets, or clocks, we have access through one of our members. We also have books, lectures, and software, if you would like to improve your play. We have several strong players, but we also have some people that are just starting out, so it's easy to find someone at your level. And, of course, we're always eager to meet new people! So, stop by any Wednesday, and say hello.

  8. There's been a lot of interest in this thread, but no one has stated the obvious. I'd like to point out some known facts (i.e., facts that Carly Reisig and the police have both stated) in italics, with some comments of my own, not in italics.

    1. Two people were shot in the street, by an off-duty police officer. They desperately needed medical attention.

And what was the officer's reaction? Did he call an ambulance? Send for a doctor? Notify his station that he required assistance? No.

    2. He ran away.

Can anyone think of a good reason for him to run away? Did he think the night air would be good for them? Would any compassionate person, innocent of wrongdoing, have acted in that manner? No? Then, why run away? That’s easy.

    3. He’s a police officer. He knows when a crime has been committed. And he didn’t want to be anywhere near the scene of the crime when the police arrived.

Maybe those few facts don’t tell the whole story. But, they’re enough to decide who the victims were, and who the criminal was.

  9. I friend of mine is interested in buying an above ground pool in Chiang Mai. He would like one approximately 5 meters in diameter (if round), or 4 meters by 8 meters if rectangular, and approximately 1 meter deep.

Anyone know of a place where they're sold?

  10. Thanks for all the input. The general opinion seems to be, that this is not the optimum time to invest in a camcorder. I'd either be buying old, soon to be antiquated technology, or new, expensive, and probably flawed technology. Maybe I'll stick with my old Sony digital still camera. It's a dinosaur, but at least I know how to use it.

    Thanks again.

  11. A 747 was starting its descent and the pilot had forgotten to turn off the P.A. system.

''As soon as we land,'' he said, ''I'm going to have a nice cold beer and then screw the arse off that blonde flight attendant.'' The horrified flight attendant made a dash toward the cockpit, but tripped over in the aisle.

A little old lady sitting there whispered, ''There's no need to hurry love, he said he was going to have a beer first.''
