  1. living above the Lone Staar about 4 years earlier on

Now that I did not know.

George himself was legendary, as he should have been after some 44 years on the ground in Bangkok.

Apparently he and Bourbon Street Doug had a place on Patpong before moving to the Square

Then there was the spice king, German Kurt,

He was darn near mad the last few times I saw him. Even though he was living above Lone Star he was forbidden from entering the bar. Not sure what happened to him since it's all been torn down.

Well-known local writer Roger Beaumont once described Squaronians -- as they call themselves -- as "men with thousand-yard stares"

I lived across the hallway from Roger for a while, which was right around the corner from the Square, but never once saw him on the Square.

one is far less likely to get hassled or ripped off in the Square than he well might in quite a few other places.

That was the attraction for many.

  2. Just a quick drive up Ratchadaphisek gives an inkling of the size of the Thai side of the sex industry...huge multistorey places - many of them wont even allow farang to enter!

I've never heard of a Falahng being barred entry from any establishment on Rachada, but I guess it could happen if they were dressed like a pauper.

  3. I have been here for 11 years and have never even heard of the place.

Well, it was there long before you got to Thailand. I hope you don't mean you live in BKK and didn't know about Wash. Sq., that'd be a shame.

we could really use less of "those kinda farangs" in Bkk

those kind are the ones who started Soi Cowboy. The guy in the room next to me on Soi 22 was a partner with Cowboy, the black marine who opened one of the first bars on that strip between Asoke and Soi 23.

  4. Each office you go to will have different interpretations of the law. If at first you don't succeed, just go to a different office.

They were all set to give me a renewal in Au Udom w/o taking any tests, but they were going to do it on a paper license. Their hard plastic card machine was broken. I didn't fancy having a 5 year license made of paper.

I went to Chonburi city and got it done in plastic, but I had to take the test and watch the cautionary video too.

All this was done on a tourist visa BTW.
