  1. I believe they were guilty of cheating. Now there is power vacuum. All part of dismantling the old power structure.

Corruption, is endemic here, and like all corruption is used to keep the rich, rich and powerfull and the poor, poor and helpless.

Yes, by all means start at the top, but instead of tweeking the regulations and laws to make themselves look busy, this government would have been in an ideal situation to start puting an end to this type of most anti-social behaviour. The only country to slip from 1st world to 3rd world status was Jamaca... and the reason...corruption. The real fight, if Thailand wants to advance itself lies in letting go of their dog eat dog mentality, and their inability to see the poverty they crawl and scramble over in their efforts to maintain their positions of power. :o

  2. caught in that myself ,

looked very difficult to see how the driver could escape it,

    Lets hope he/she did.

With your wheels, how u no which way u goin. They do get u noticed. Glad u safe pal.

  3. too true thaigerd. the hill is in need of a serious re-surface. its polished like a piece of glass and is dangerous enough on a good day. when the rain starts, it just goes to pieces.

i always keep my distance from the vehicle in front, and never get involved in the 'make your own second lane' brigade. its just too dangerous. the last corner, where the accident happened, is the worst one on the road too.

Any more stories about the Patong / Katu tunnel? :o

  4. hi i have just moved to chalong from koh samui(thank god)i am looking for places for a beer and some nice restaurants in the area any ideas? thanks.

    Hi Bill

Drop in to Baan Kiki around tea time, its known as the "local's local" hidden away on the left 1.1/2 km from Chalong circle on the road to central festival. The local ex pats chin wag here, over a beer, on a regular basis.

  5. I want to go out one of the next sundays with a boat. Nothing special more like a fishing boat where we can go to an island for a rest, some fishing and bring our own food or bbq.

    Around 10 people.

    Any ideas???

    Thx!

    Gerd

Yes most fishing boats will take 10 quite comfortably for around 10,000 B inc. lunch and soft drinks. BUT I would recomend 5/6 per boat to allow everyone a chance at catching a fish. So for 2000 B per head take 2 boats and have your very own competition. Probably a good idea as anchoring large boats in the low season off some deserted beach is VERY weather/tide dependant.

Lumpy wrather in a speed boat is at best uncomfortable and my friends with longtails would find 10 a bit much and you would have little to no cover in the rain. Look to the weather forecast, or look to my 1st/2nd option a days fishing in the rain can be great fun with the right company, a competition even better. BBQ on boat, bad idea, and getting one ashore without a tender even worse.

Drop me a line, no bait needed. if you want me to help out.

  6. Does anyone know of a 2 bedroom house available somewhere in Phuket? 8-19k/mo? I'll probably stay a while, but am unwilling to sign a lease for longer than 6 months.

Looking at moving in on 16th Nov. ADSL/Internet availability is a must, even better if it's already installed :o

  7. These kinds of posts are really starting to annoy me. Can you please open your eyes? There are a significant number of people living in Thailand who do not seem to qualify for any of the visa options UNLESS they are going to permit endless tourist visas. What visa would you suggest a 40 year old retired American apply for who is not married to a Thai and does not wish to work or do business in Thailand?

Well you seem to think those that are initiating these new visa rules care about the plight of those that dont fall in the categories you describe.

If you know someone who cares, please let us all know. He/she should be v busy.

  8. So we have all seen the latest on the visa issue relating to us all here in the los.

We have decided that our next meeting will be concentrating on this issue.

Generally a dozen or so people attend , and normally any advice we require is resolved through one of the members previous personal experiences or knowledge of a particular subject.

Our next meeting will be held at Baan Kiki in Chalong on Friday 15th Sept at 3pm.

The more of us that attend the more likely it will be that individual issues may be answered by the group.

Baan Kiki is situated between chalong circle and wat chalong around 1.5 km on the left if heading from the circle.
