  1. OP,

You'll never get useful information on boards like this one about property in Thailand. It's almost like arguing about religion.

Some are devoted renters, others like the psychological effect of owning.

A curious effect is many of the more strident "Never buy ... " just rent in Thailand crowd don't own much of anything anywhere.

A new neighbor like a karaoke bar, motorcycle repair shop, metal crusher, factory or developer can ruin your property value overnight.

What are you going to do? Call the cops?

Not buy in a place where that is likely to happen. I have never had it happen in my +30 years in Thailand.

Buying a place to live? Ok. If you plan on staying 10 years or more. Just be aware it can go belly up in a split second.

A friend of mine opened a beautiful hotel in Phuket. The neighbor, a cop, opened a karaoke(plays till 7AM) rendering half the rooms useless. Millions lost and he dare not complain...

Investing in rental property in Thailand? I think you would be taking more risk than necessary.

I agree it is risky but it is risky just about everywhere. In my case, and I acknowledge I was lucky. I cashed out most of my real estate holdings in the US in 2006 and ploughed those funds into Thai real estate the same week of the Thaksin coup. At the time the USD/Baht rate was about 40:1. So over the past few years I benefited from an exchange rate bonus as well as avoiding a drastic US downturn. BTW, another bonus about Thai real estate ... there is virtually no real estate tax.

So could that reverse, I'm sure it could. Everything financially related runs in cycles. But I don't view the US real estate or political situiation any less risky than the Thai market, especially if Obozo is re-elected and the debt ceiling keeps rising.

  2. No flame at all, just simply pointing out that its better to do some research before making assumptions. corn tortillas are not simply corn and water as has been incorrectly suggested and masa must be made from field corn not regular sweet corn and involves lime (stone) so its not a simple easy process.

I have never found masa in any kinds of real quantities in Thailand and did research trying to find corn of the right hardness (yes its got to have the right starch content) in Thailand as well. So, before suggesting you are getting flamed perhaps take my politely worded suggestion and do some research.

I'll remember that the next time I am warned about flaming .... but I was just pointing out (politely worded) that the other guy should do some research.

That's almost as good as "evolving view" in lieu of changed position.

  5. Yes, a rather ominous development. We need to slow down this wave before it's too late.

What we need are these Thai-hating, Thai-bashing zealots to be more aggressive and vocal in announcing to prospective newbies that Thailand sucks. "There's nothing here." "It's expensive." "Thais are racist and hate foreigners." "Dual-pricing everywhere." "Thai women are only interested in foreigners' money." "The roads are dangerous because no one knows how to drive." "It's dirty because everyone dumps their trash everywhere." "The air is toxic to breath." "The food is terrible and not safe to eat." "Everyone is corrupt." Don't come! Go to the Philippines! You've been warned.

    Maybe that'll do it.

Or just read ThaiVisa, they might think we're representative of the other farang they'll meet and stay far away.

    dam_n, I hope not.

  6. Free chips are starting to be a thing of the past. Even Tequila Reef is quite clear that with rising costs they can no longer give customers free chips.

How expensive is a little corn, water, and salt (all easily sourced locally)? Throw in some oil and a few bahts worth of gas for frying and walla...cheap and tasty corn chips!

Suggest you learn how to make corn tortillas before making assumptions about how easily they are made.

So are Moderators allowed to flame?

  7. Very interesting article..i am sure and i have no doubt you are right with satistics..But i think you need to also factor in the changing face of Thailand..Many of the nouveau rich in thailand have achieved that status by selling off the family land and replacing it with a new car/apartment or one or another of the westen ideals that as we speak in relation to the world markets are no longer credible..The basics are changing very quickly..And Thailand like Bali and most emerging Asian countries is in danger of leaving behind the very things that allowed then a decent feed and a cheap beer..Lets hope not and that they keep the values of the common people

Care to cite any sources about that fanciful porky "nouveau rich in Thailand ... achieved ... selling off land for new car ..."

    No? I didn't think so.

  8. I heard a rumour that there is a volcano will erupt in Bangkok later this year? Is there any evidence for this, or is it just a rumour?

Seriously OP, what the hell sort of question is that? How can there be rumours about natural events? What do they teach kids in school these days, cos it sure isn't common sense?

Teach? ... You're having a laugh ... It is more like babysitters and nannies ... But at least it keeps both the kiddies and the "Teachers" off Khao San Road.

  9. Where did you here the rumours?

Or are you just trying to start them yourself?

From the head of our school telling us to make sure we get 80% of work done in the first somester

    Posted with Thaivisa App http://apps.thaivisa.com

This sounds more like a ploy to get you to do more work. Say you do the 80% in the first semester. Do you really think they'll let you sit back and only do the other 20% for the rest of the year. My money is on that they'll pile on more knowing that they can.

My money is on they will find a way to declare you non essential staff and cancel your contract to save them money.

  10. Look into Wang Saphung. It is about 20 km from Loei (Loei has a good hospital and even an airport ... Albeit at the moment only 1 flight per week to BKK). Land is available at a wide range of prices, but you should be able to find several plots that would fit your criteria.

  11. Used to be a Leo guy but converted to Chang EXPORT in my opinion the best Thai beer, if you haven't tried it give it a go-

Same for me, but still quite happy with a Leo if Export not available.

But be careful, on Thai Visa you are nor supposed to praise Thai beer (see a thread currently running on the Whingers/General forum).

Yeah, unless you want to be "suspended ... Like a kid put on a timeout" best to not criticize something a TV Moderator supports.

  12. Your nickname should be sTROLLing!

I am the first one to be on the Thai side because many times is just the farang being stupid and rude so I feel no sympathy at all. In this case, and for what the OP said, it is quite clear that those Thais were overdoing probably because they felt feed up with stupid westerners, and this is inexcusable. You must always remember where you

are and what you can or cannot do, but this doesn't apply here, man. I know it, you know it, everyone knows it, so stop trolling around!

Anyway, I don't understand the tourists going to Khaosan. I was there only once some years ago and I didn't like it at all. Maybe I am just weird, I don't like the uplaces with many tourists/westerners, scammers, drunkards, etc I came to Thailand to live amongst Thais and enjoy their culture. This is the same reason why I don't understand all those bars full of expats: I didn't come here to meet other farangs, I leave my country because I didn't like the "western culture" there :-P Sorry for the off-topic

LMAO; maybe you are weird? ... no there is no doubt.

  13. Maybe he is a liar. I have met quite a few of them too.

    I'm ex-SAS did you know. giggle.gif

How long were you a member of the Special Ambulance Service? Did you drive the ambulance itself or were you an bedside attendant?cowboy.gif

Do you usually miss sarcasm/satire so spectacularly or are you just that dense?

  14. There are worse places than Britain. USA comes to mind.

I'm just very happy I don't have to live there any longer.

Agreed! As an American, the main reasons I left are

    - 40% of my paycheck gone before I receive it

    - Ridiculous property taxes on family houses ($12,000/year in my county)

    - No health Insurance? Then please die quietly; away from the marble entrance of our private hospital

    - University tuition ($50,000/ year over 4 years $200,000 for a Bachelor degree)

    - Crazy Rednecks! (Tea Party)

    - New Gingrich

    - Barack Obama let us down!

Another addition by subtraction; maybe the US is back on the way to the sunny side of the street after all.

  15. Then you are still not on "fair usage" right now.

Check when you're on fair usage. Note: there is no unlimited 3 G

package. The carriers just call it unlimited, ,although it is not. It's

very misleading to most subscribers when they sign up.

Perhaps, but in the 4 months I have had it, the access has been faultless, the speed of data undetectably different from my Bangkok 9mbd data package and unless you were downloading torrents all day long it seems to be pretty unlimited. there are no other charges from Dtac.

Sounds very refreshing. Where are you located in a remote village or in a town? If you have a tower nearby then things are very different, of course. I'm not downloading any torrents, but my Internet is on all day, I'm doing websites. That might be different with you.

I am near Erawan which is on the edge of Nong Bua Lam Phu province, near the border to Loei province.

I use Skype a lot on both the Samsung Galaxy II phone standalone and also Skype on the Ipad tethered to the Samsung which acts as the WiFi hotspot. The signal is good, dependable and I have been able to use it both stationary and while traveling all through the North/Northeast.

It's a great way to connect, very cheap, and reliable ... but I don't use it more than a couple of hours continuously per day and don't download much. For a general internet browsing experience in non cable areas of Thailand it is hard to beat for the price. When I had to use Edge I was probably burning through 2000 - 3000 baht per month in charges for a very slow and unreliable connection.

No problem at all with Dtac. Tether my IPad to

my Samsung and no perceptible speed or data problems.

May I ask what package you're on and are you

on 'fair usage" right now (384Kbps)? Do you live in a remote area or in a

    town? Thanks for your feedback.

I am far from a techie so I am just guessing it is fair usage. It is Dtac unlimited 3G package, 500 Baht per month. I just set the tether and the IPad recognizes the WiFi signal coming from the Samsung Galaxy II.

The signal is as good as my 3BB package with a dedicated router in Bangkok.

Please write a lot more so we can read well.

Well actually ... please do not.
