Hi all, I plan to move from the UK to Hua Hin on a non-immigrant O visa.

As far as personal possessions go, my collection of musical instruments, recording equipment and tech gear is all I want to bring with me. I just want to use them for my own projects, not for anything commercial. However, I'm concerned that Thai customs might not see it that way.

I also read the "Non Immigrant Quota" posting by @MangoKorat which, while fascinating, was inconclusive, alas.

Can anyone advise me on the best approach? Maybe the contents needs to be documented in some preferred way. I also read somewhere about 'brokers' of sorts, who hang around the ports and negotiate the duty charges for you. Obviously I'd prefer not to pay anything but I suspect that's unlikely, I just don't want to overpay.

Incidentally, I will probably use Seven Seas Worldwide 'MoveCube' for shipping to BKK, but am open to suggestions. Thanks.

If you want duty relief on used personal and household

effects on change of residence, you would have to be on a long term visa I believe, eg non O retirement. Then you have up to three months after you arrive to import the goods, usually only paying T money as used effects are tax free on change of residence. A non O is only valid for 90 days.

If they can take the winter fuel allowance away from UK pensioners then there is no way they are going to give an increase to a pensioner living in Thailand.

There is a way around it though move back to UK get the increase then move back to Thailand or if you move to Philippines you would get the increase every year.

    I agree it's not fair but its not going to change, a pensioner living in Thailand is very low down on the list of priorities. (They don't vote}

Yes they do vote, for the first 15 years after moving out here.

I think mileage varies - the DLT's in different area's do have varying requirements... (for example, some accept a yellow house book as proof of address, others do not).

Common sense suggests take the overseas license with you, its better to have it and not need it than to leave it at home and risk getting asked for it (each time I've renewed my license, in BKK, I've had to submit my overseas license and provide copies).

On Samui you only needed home license and IDP for initial 2 year license. For 5 year license all other documents required as above. Don't know about qr code as it didn't exist when I last renewed 5 years ago.

    Hi Andrew

I read your post - it was indeed a nightmare! I am glad you got it sorted.

I may be facing a similar fate. After speaking to them, I received a follow-up email that said they no longer needed my original passport but now needed to see identification. Apparently, they believe I submitted copies and not originals of the ID.

That is not true. I took originals and copies to VFS Global, as instructed.

For some reason, they believe I submitted only copies and not originals. As a result, they now want me to send hard copies to the HMPO in Corby.

I called again and explained that I had taken the originals to VFS Global. They have passed this information on to the 'examiner' and I must now await an email.

I am just looking at the receipt that VFS Global gave me. There is a document receipt checklist that confirms the type of ID submitted. I have two rows ticked for driving licence and house registration book (which was actually a letter, signed and date by Amphur, confirming I live at that address). Next to each of these are two columns: one that says 'tick if copy' and one that says 'tick if translation'. VFS global have ticked the copy column.

Now, this obviously means that they have submitted a copy of the original - and not a translation. I suspect that HMPO are assuming this means I provided only copies.

It's a case of incompetence. The fact is, VFS Global will not accept mere copies - they need to see originals PLUS a copy. For some reason, HMPO is assuming this means ONLY A COPY.

What a joke. This is going to take weeks, and my passport expires in May.... Plus, I need to apply for my extension end of April. I didn't imagine it would take longer than 6 weeks and I assumed that a renewal would be simple and easy with no dramas.

Assume makes an ass of u and me

German Models Caught in Koh Pha Ngan Shoplifting Scandal

A seemingly routine moment in a Koh Pha Ngan shop spiralled into controversy after two German men, presumed to be models, were caught shoplifting twice in one day. The incident unfolded at Sprout, a handcrafted home goods store run by Ploy, who resolutely took a stand against the culprits.

The debacle began on March 18 when the suspects first entered Ploy's store at around 1:30 p.m., discreetly taking a bottle of body oil valued at 550 Thai Baht (£12). Emboldened, they returned just hours later, snatching a 650 Thai Baht (£14) roll-on deodorant at 4:30 p.m. But their brief spree of alleged thievery did not go unnoticed.

Determined to hold them accountable, Ploy shared CCTV footage capturing their actions on her social media accounts. In a strategic move, she tagged their Instagram accounts, encouraging public scrutiny. By uniting Thai and English-speaking netizens in outrage, Ploy helped bring the incident to light.

Observers noted that given their apparent modelling careers and possession of designer items, financial necessity seemed an unlikely motive, making their actions all the more perplexing.

Following their discovery, one of the men reached out to Ploy, incredulously denying any wrongdoing even after she presented them with clear evidence.

Upon further engagement, they admitted to the theft but showed no signs of remorse, which galvanised Ploy to pursue justice. Reporting the incident to Koh Pha Ngan Police, she brushed aside suggestions to settle the matter privately and elected instead to press charges, seeking to set an example for tourists thinking of breaching local laws.

Plans to advance legal proceedings may pose severe consequences for the pair. If their failure to appear in court results in a conviction, they could face a ban from returning to Thailand. Meanwhile, their attempts to evade public scrutiny appear futile as they made their Instagram profiles private amidst mounting criticism.

As the saga unfolds, there are calls for Ploy to inform the modelling agencies linked to the duo, which could further jeopardise their professional standing, as integrity remains a key criterion in the fashion industry.

This incident underlines the critical importance of respecting local customs and laws, reminding foreign visitors that actions abroad carry tangible consequences. Ultimately, Ploy’s unyielding pursuit of legal action sends a potent message about accountability and respect, reported The Thaiger.

Maybe it's got something to do with people struggling so much in the UK they're willing to do this but yes it a fair comment to say this is being coordinated. That's the end they need to find but from what I've seen the UK police are to busy arresting people for "hate speech" posts on social media.

Nothing to do with uk police. Importation are the remit of Border Force.
