If you plan not to work in Thailand again, you don't need to worry about cancelling your Work Permit. You won't have any problem leaving through an airport. Apparently some people leaving via the Lao land borders, with no receipt for cancellation of their W. P. have been denied exit, and told to take care of that first.

Once you are outside of Thailand, you are just like a first time tourist; there is nothing stopping you from coming back.

    Thank you.

I have heard that I must cancel my WP first? And if I don’t then I risk a fine on my return (whenever that will be).
So I do not need to cancel anything, go to the labour office (to hand in WP) or even go to CW to do anything?

To cut a long story short I have a Non-B extension of stay and a work permit,, my contract expires in month, I have a multiple reentry permit. Things have not worked out with my employer and we wish to part ways with immediate effect. I have asked for my work permit and non-b extensions of stay to be cancelled but my employer is not cooperating on this at the moment. I simply want to transition to a tourist visa or 30 day visa exempt ASAP.

Please advise the proper procedure for cancelling a non-b visa and work permit and if this can be done without my employer. Any other useful advice on how I can out of this situation would be helpful.

Edit: first priority is to leave the country and then at some stage return.

  4. Hi there,

My agent is saying that they don’t intend to come to labour office or immigration with me and that I need to do this myself. They have said that they will cancel my work permit after I leave the country.

I understand I have an extension of stay and that when the work permit is cancelled I need to leave the country immediately.

What advice could you give me please? What should I/ so I need to do in this situation? Are there any other things I need to consider regarding work permit, visa/ extension of stay?

Do I need to go to labour office and immigration?

    Thank you for your help,

You need to formally cancel your extension at immigration. If you go to immigration a few days before the termination date show on a letter from your employer they will post date the cancelation to that day.

You can only apply for a multiple entry tourist visa in your home country or country of legal residence.

You could apply for a single entry tourist visa at a nearby embassy or consulate.

Hi there, I don't understand, what's the 'extension'?

Is having worked here and then going to a thai consulate in a neighbouring country going to be an issue getting a tourist visa to come back into the country?

  6. Hi there,

My agent has suggested they will cancel my wp and non b visa.

What is the most straight forward, and second to that, cost effective border run please?

Are there other consulates anyone has experienced to be hassle free, securing a METV to return, after having worked in Thailand on a WP and non-b visa?

Will I get questioned, as in, are you not coming back to work!? and then be refused a visa. What's the best thing to do here please?

British national with a degree with less than 5 visits to Thailand and only a handful of border runs in the last 10 years.

Looking to come back and find another teaching position.

    Thank you for your help,

once the contract is ended, they are supposed to cancel WP and visa right away. and yep it's an official need.

best bet's do a border run and get 30 days or get a tourist visa in another country. not sure about the terms of the contract, but they may owe you severance pay. i think six months or more is the magic number but that's off the top of my head and may be wrong.

    Thank you for your help.

I will query my contract with my agent.

So to ensure my visa and work permit are cancelled, and to know the date, to avoid overstay and other matters, I might want to go and do this myself at the immigration and labour offices.

At immigration I just say that now I will leave the country, or will they want me to have proof of onward travel?

Are you on the 90 day entry form a non-b or a extension of stay based upon teaching. The 90 day entry would remain valid. The extension ends the day you job ends.

I’m on extension of stay, 90 day is due in one month. My paperwork including contract good for a few months  - the main issue is the abrupt nature of the termination of my job and them wanting to cancel my visa, essentially pulling the rug from under me and wanting me to uproot my life and move out of the country at a weeks notice. The way I see it is there is no official reason to not give me a few weeks grace at least, not sure what my contract clause is for termination of contract or thai labour laws but I’m not interested in fighting it, just want a reasonable amount of time to make plans to move on.

  9. Hi there,

I'd be really grateful for any advice please.

Teaching in a school in Thailand, via an agent, who arranged a work permit and non-b visa.

The school have discontinued the contract and the agency are talking about cancelling the wp and visa, only giving a week’s notice.

Is there any official need to urgently cancel work permit and visa or could a few weeks be allowed, given the abrupt notice?

Is the agent able to do this? Are there any labor laws that would cover this?

If they do, what are the implications of them doing this please? In terms of leaving country, new visa etc?

The work permit and non b visa expire in a good few months time.

The 90 days notification to immigration is due within a month.

If you have any advice about what you think can be done in this situation, I’d be most grateful. It would be nice to find another teaching job.

Thank you so much for any help or advice.

    Emma
