  1. I came in Feb for a 2-3 month holiday, for the length of my tourist visa.  My visa doesn't expire till May (barring an extension) and I'm in no hurry to go back to the disease ridden sh*thole that's the NYC area or the US in general while Thai authorities are actually dealing with this semi-competently.

No money worries, it would be nice to get to the beach but c'est la vie.  Better than dying, what?

Now sod off from making assumptions about people you've never met and have no idea about.

Edit:  I'd add that it's probably prudent to get back to the NHS in case the Covid19 virus does force someone to seek medical attention.  Seems like travel insurance doesn't cover it, and I'd hate to be stuck in a Thai hospital with no way to pay for treatment.

My travel insurance (Allianz) sent me an email saying they don't usually cover epidemics but they will cover COVID-19.  Just saying.

Now honestly, I'd hate to have to navigate the AMERICAN medical system while overloaded in the tri state area, so I'm staying put here in Phuket till my visa+extension expires or planes start running again, whichever is later.

  3. Isn't the issue of the following caveat been discussed to death in the other thread (spoiler:  it isn't even possible for most to get this letter)?

"The letter must be from the embassy or consulate requesting that the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau allow the foreigner to stay in the country longer. It must name the foreigner and it must have the sentence that the foreigner ‘is unable to travel due to the COVID-19 coronvirus situation.’ It must be an actual letter, hand over with a copy of their passport at the Phuket Immigration Office during office hours."

  4. I guess the more pertinent question is whether flights are available, even though Emirates etc seem to have reliable routes available to be booked as of now even if the more common carriers (United, ANA, etc) don't.

My original return flight is on ANA in May, but it shows availability for flights this week if I try to change it.

Personally I'd much rather layover in Dubai than Tokyo so I might cancel and get a new one with Emirates or Qatar.

  5. Any Americans on here?  We landed on Feb 29 and were planning to stay till May 26 (with a brief visa run into Cambodia end of April).

Now, however the State Dept is issuing ominous sounding messages with things like:

"U.S. citizens normally resident in the U.S. but currently outside the U.S,, i.e. tourists and other short-term travelers, should return while there are still transportation options available. "

Opinions?   Are people trying to head back right away or planning to wait it out?

    1. Would there actually be no transportation options open in a month or two?  Unlike the rest of the world, flights to/from Thailand seem normal-ish (although I realize anything can change overnight).

    2. Where does it seem safer?  Currently, it's a strong pointer to here in Thailand vs back in the NYC area but the first cases in Phuket were just announced....

    3. It certainly sounds safer to wait and let them get better at sanitization and other processes for flying, but (insert unknown here)?
