  1. Administrative Court orders halting of building in Pattaya

The Administrative Court in Rayong issued on Wednesday an injunction halting construction of a residential building that will block sea views of residents in a nearby condominium.

The court injunction noted that Pattaya City Council allowed building of View Talay Jomtien Condominium to proceed when it might have violated regulations protecting the rights of nearby residents.

    ...

The court said the site of the condominium appeared to be less than the legally required distance of 200 metres from Jomtien Complex Condotel.

Regulations require building of 18 metres or higher to be more than 200 metres apart. The View Talay Jomtien Condominium is a 27-storey, 81-metre tall building.

Although the court has not ruled on the 200metre distance issue, it ordered an injunction and said the owners of the condominium would have to prove they were not violating the regulation.

    - The Nation

I'm confused. All the discussion in this thread is about whether the new development is >200 metres from the 'shoreline'. But the Nation report suggests that the legal issue is the distance from the building itself (given that both are > 18 metres). Has the Nation misunderstood, or are there two separate issues here? The one that the Nation identifies certainly sounds the more reasonable (or at least equally reasonable), given what I know of planning requirements elsewhere.

  2. Burnetts comment:

"The proliferation of foreign-owned or rented apartments can make child sexual abusers harder to detect, as instead of abusing children in bars or hotels, they are now able to do so in their own homes"

Supposing Mr. Burnett had said ""The proliferation of African-American- / Jewish- / immigrant- / homosexual-owned or rented apartments can make child sexual abusers harder to detect, as instead of abusing children in bars or hotels, they are now able to do so in their own homes." M'learned friends would be getting busy, I surmise...

Personally, the thing I fear most is a proliferation of NGO-worker-owned or rented apartments in my neighbourhood. I was once hired to do consultancy with some '3rd world / development NGO' staffers back in England. They were by some distance the most unprincipled group of people I ever met professionally. The great majority were either unable, or unwilling, to distinguish between a research study and something they made up on the way to the meeting. I've still got some of their 'research reports' somewhere; they would be hilarious if it wasn't for the fact that someone got PAID for writing them. There was one about sex-tourism in Goa that I particularly treasure (but it would take much too long to describe)...

Last May I purchased a condo at Jomtien Beach Condominium, and made arrangements with real estate agent to let on my behalf on long term contract, as yet the agent has not been able to let it so I am considering the option of advertising it here in the UK as a holiday apartment.

When I viewed the condo I was not introduced to the condominiums management company so I am unaware of what services they can offer and I am very surprised to find no listing on the web for them, in particular I would like to know if they can arrange maid service, see my guests in, inspect for any breakages when they depart and arrange for any repairs and/or if there is any other company in the Pattaya area who can offer this service.

Are you at the condo now? There's a little coffee shop at the bottom front corner of A1 (the first of the back buildings). It's essentially an estate agency, though it's not advertised. The owner - a

young-ish Thai woman - can probably arrange it. I'd trust her, I think - she seems quite together and professional. There are also a lot of shops in the front buildings (S1 - S2) that claim to do property sale / rental. Most of them are owned by ex-bar girls, 'set up in business' by Falangs (of whom some have since been sent packing, some kept in partnership, some replaced by second-generation donors). Personally, I wouldn't trust their business model. But other falangs obviously do trust them, so what do I know? And there's always the chance they'll rip off the other guy, and pass the savings on to you...

The condo management itself is basically good, but the middle tiers have a reputation for helping themselves to a cut, so you'd probably want to monitor things, or at least get a very clear idea of what you're paying for.

    Coltrane,

Thank you for your reply, I am not there at present, wish I was but it is another 10 weeks before I get back out, the purchase was completed after I left in April, so I need to check everything out before I start to let it as a holiday apartment.

The one thing that really impressed me about JBC was it appeared to be well looked after even though it was not new, I visited other condominiums witch are a lot newer, like VTC1 not only were they not so well maintained, security appeared to be a big issue with many properties with many locks and security grills on most doors.

I am certain that I can find the right management company who do the sort of thing I am looking for, it just going to take me some time to find them.

Try the place I mentioned. You definitely want someone 'on the spot' to do this for you =not an agency over in Pattaya. The buildings themselves are well run (so far!).

And it isn't View Talay - only a VERY few residents with whole-body tattoos...

  4. _ April 13: Karr was arrested on five misdemeanor counts of possession of child pornography, the Sonoma County sheriff's office said.

_ Oct. 5: After a series of court hearings, Karr was released from jail, but was ordered to report to a probation officer ...

Is it normal in the US to spend - what? - around 6 month in jail for misdemeanor counts of this sort?

And that seems, by inference, to be just on remand? Otherwise, why is he considered to be 'on the run'? For breaking parole conditions?
