Hi All,
I am working (with work permit) and living in Thailand. I just opened a Current Account with a local bank because it offers a check book.
Today, I told my company's payroll the account details and they tell me they can only pay salary into a Savings Account, not a Current Account.
Why? Is this right? Seem crazy? I wanted all my banking to be done in one account. I don't want to have to go open another Savings Account.
Anyone have any similar experience? Are all companies like this, or is my company just stupid?

Hi All,
Sorry if if this question has been asked before.
As you know, there is significant difference between the offshore and onshore THB exchange rate (offshore about 32THB/1USD, versus onshore about 35THB/1USD).
I have some THB in a Thai bank account that I want to transfer to the US. I want to do the transfer in THB and let the receiving bank exchange it into USD (to take advantage of the better offshore rate).
But how?
Seems like all the local Thai banks will only exchange first and then send it as USD via TT.
Apart from taking THB cash with me and flying out, is there any other way? Bank Check? Demand Drafts?
Thanks!

Thanks camerata, your info is alot of help.
I now don't think I will bother getting a Resident Permit... it is very different to what PR normally means in other countries... for me, it seems more hassle than it is worth.
Thanks anyway.

Hi Sunbelt,
Thanks for the great information.
I plan to apply for PR (under working category, as I have had Work Permit for over 3 years), but I want to understand what I have to do to keep it, given that I often need to travel outside Thailand for work.
I understand that I need to:
1. Apply each year for a 1-year endorsement of my Residence Book (1,900 THB)
2. Apply each year for a 1-year re-entry visa in my passport (3,800 THB multiple entry).
3. Present myself at the police station covering the area where I am a resident once every five years for a stamp in my Residence Book.
4. Maintain an address in Thailand.
Are there any other requirements?
If I don't do the above (for example work overseas for longer than 1 year), then my PR will be canceled?
Thanks.

Wasn't it reported in the press that newer phones/SIM cards (purchased this year) are prepared for the 10 digit system but older phones/SIM cards have to be taken to the shop to have the SIM cards upgraded? The free service would be available from Sep.01 according to reports.

Yes I read the same, but I tried dialing my mobile with an 8 from a landline and it connected!
I certainly haven't been into a shop to get upgraded.
Don't know why there is so much wrong information given out .

Thanks for your advice opalhort and everyone.
Now they tell me that I would need to cancel my 2.5mb service and reapply for the 4mb service.
Given that it took 3 months for True to get my service ready last time and probably the 4mb service won't be must better. I will just wait for the time being.
True is an amazingly crap company. I doubt they would survive in any developed country.

Oh I checked my speed with speedtest.net:

Pretty woeful for what is supposed to be a 2.5mb service... but no surprise really.

Thanks for your advice.
My modem is BIPAC-7000 ADSL USB Modem. You think that will work with 4mb service?

Hi All,
I have had a 2.5mb Internet service from True for a couple of years. It has been getting slower and slower, particularly in the last couple of months. It is so painful, I have decided to upgrade.
I can't see much point in complaining because the staff either don't understand or lie.
When I told them I wanted to upgrade to 4mb, they said I would need to buy a new modem.
Is this correct or another lie?
I currently have the original Billion that I bought from True when I first started with them
Appreciate your advice.
