  1. I realize my experience may be the exception, however, I would like to share it. I have been coming to and staying 6 months every year for a long time in Thailand. A few years ago I was staying at the Grand President in a one bedroom apartment and noticed my ring was missing. It is a very old ring with 3 rubies and 6 diamonds that was handed down for generations. After a day of frantic searching I thought I would call housekeeping. I didn't have any high aspirations, but thought I had nothing to lose by doing so.

Later that evening housekeeping rang me and said they found the ring and would bring it up to me. I asked where they found it and was told that some of the staff sifted through the garbage collected that day from all 3 towers and that is where they found it. For those that do not know, the G.P. is not a small complex. I assume it fell off my finger as it did fit a little loosely.

I treat the housekeeping staff very well at every place I stay. One can never tell when the kindness and thoughtfulness given to others might just be rewarded!

  2. I will spending a few days in PP soon and desperately need some good advice. I tried many searches for the answers but couldn't find them, so I apologize if I am posting incorrectly. Here are my questions:

    1. A good place to stay within walking distance to the better bars with ladies around. What other interesting activities are nearby?

    2. Do all of the hotels allow joiners? If not, which ones will allow?

    3. Has anyone stayed or visited the Naga World Casino? How far removed from the area you recommend is it?

    4. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all for your input!

This is NOT an investigation into the private life of the OP. Nor should he feel the need to justify himself to anyone.

Debate/discuss the subject of the topic NOT the poster.

Excuse me Mr. Mod, but isn't he doing essentially the same by his criticisms of those who choose to live or hang around the Nana area?

I never criticized anyone who lives there. Please, do not exaggerate,

I am extending my opinion about the location I find somewhat dodgy.

My first example were taxis because I really thought people were exaggerating (I see many taxi complaints on this forum) until I stayed at Nana.

Perhaps your intent was not to criticize, however, when one makes blanket statements about an "area", it more often than not includes the people living, working, etc. there. I'll grant you Nana is quite different than other places, which is exactly why I as well as many love it. If I wanted to be in an area where the variety of life was more subdued, then i would do that instead of paying many times over just to be here. I'll take the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly that comes with Nana over the monotony of other places. The difference is that when I do venture into areas such as where you live, I never ever post anything negative about what a terrible place it is to live. Our differences are what makes life in general much more exciting and interesting!

  5. Hello: Has anyone had any recently positive experiences with an AIRBNB long term rental? I stay in bkk every year for 6 months and have always rented a serviced apartment, but thought I would look into the AIRBNB. I would appreciate any information and/or advice you can give me. Thank you very much!

  6. Rather than using bank-to-bank or other methods to provide funds for my gf, I am thinking about opening up another sub account at my bank in the USA. This new account would be part of my primary one, however, I could control the transfers/withdrawals from anywhere. For example: set up the account and give my gf the atm card (with limited amounts availability). What are the downsides (if any) to this?

    Thanks for your input!

p.s. I already know I am stupid, so need in reminding me!

  7. I'm sure all is not lost. When I served in U.S. Marine Corps often had surprise inpections of ourselves, uniforms, and equipment. Many of us purchased extra pairs of shoes and boots, but never wore. We would polish them until our reflection showed. Eventually though, the polish built up too much and we had to completely strip it, as well as the dye off until we reached the original leather. We would then re-dye and start the polishing regime over again. It can be done countless times without affecting the leather. Therefore, your option is to get some stripper substance at any place selling shoe related products and do it yourself (not really that difficult) or find a place and have them do it for you. Most real shoe repair places do this all the time (not including bkk street ones) especially for women's shoes so they can match their purses!

    1. strip 2. condition 3. dye 4. polish

  8. My first trip to bkk was in the 60's as a U.S. Marine. Now I have been coming every year for the past 15 years and staying for 6 months each time. I almost never post on this site, in fact I can't remember for sure if I ever did. However, I can say from first-hand experience that Thailand is indeed changing and not always for the best. These senseless harrassments of foreignors is getting totally out of control and somehow/someway it needs to be stopped. Since the Thais are big on protest demonstrations, what do you think would result if hundreds of us organized and started demonstrating? I think many Thais would also join in. It may not bring about any sweeping change, but on the other hand, maybe it could. If nothing else, I think it would make headlines around the world and perhaps make those in power think about the negative image their country is getting.

What do you think? Maybe you have an even better idea. Instead of us just bitching, let's see if we can come up with some constructive ideas!

  9. This problem is seriously getting out of control. Prime areas I've encountered are at the entrance to Nana, walking soi 4 between Nana and Omni, just around the corner from Nana on Sukhumvit, and especially walking between Robinson's and Soi 15. All of these areas have groups of ladyboy's that are apparently immune from police intervention. I confronted the "pack" near Soi 15 and tried calling the police. After 5 minutes of waiting for someone to answer, I finally just hung up and left.

Until Bangkok gets its police under strict control, things are only going to get worse. And it's not just with the pickpockets! Last week as I was walking down Sukhumvit near Soi 12 and stepping around mounds of garbage and avoiding thais urinating along the pavement, I had just the rolled into a little ball filter remains of a cigarette in my hand. I flicked it down amongst other trash and was stopped by one of the boys in brown and promptly fined a 1,000 baht.

My advice? Stay away! It's only going to get worse.

  10. Not that anyone reading this will get there but.....let me tell you of a place in Grand Haven, Michigan U.S.A. It's called, "Fricanos". It's in a dumply old wood structure building that's been there forever. I do not exaggerate when I say people from all over the U.S. travel out of their way just eat there. The pizza has a distinct flavor and texture in which I've never seen close to being duplicated anywhere. If by chance you happen to get any place close to this place, just ask someone where it....they'll know!

  11. I know what you're talking about. Last year just before leaving Thailand I developed the same symptoms. I let it go for a few days but then I started getting the same sensation in my left leg. After three days of stumbling, dragging my foot, literally falling to the ground on a couple of occasions, I decided to check it out at Bumrungrad.

The first doc I saw referred me to a neurologist there. He was very worried and thought I may sufferring a stroke. They did an mra/mrt and concluded that looked good and further tests may reveal the problem. I told him I was scheduled to leave for U.S. in a couple of days so I would just wait until I got there.

My personal friend, and also a physician, referred me to a neurologist. After several more tests, he informed me I had (forgive me here because I can't remember exactly) multi-plexus-neurosis. He explained it probably was brought on by my diabetes and it could possibly just go away in time. That's been about 6 months ago now and my leg is fine. However, I still do have the "tingling" in the last two fingers of my left hand.

Hope your ailments are as minor as what mine turned out to be!
