No...try to follow the logic. The records may be fake but you engaged in a conspiracy to obtain them and believed them to be genuine when you accepted them. The crime of obtaining them isn't absolved if they later turn out to be fake.
Only if you are set up by the government in a sting. Otherwise not.

I don't have time for fake news...there is no proof that the records the Times is writing about are even Donald Trump's returns.
We can tell from the non-denial denial of Trump's lawyer who claimed he paid "personal taxes". The same phrase Trump himself is now using. You'll note that neither of them refer to "income taxes".

What "safeguards" are you referring to?
The fifth amendment for one. A right to a trial by jury...etc. You're honestly unfamiliar with this stuff? If so, maybe you shouldn't be so quick to voice an opinion on the matter.

The crime is engaging in a conspiracy to obtain confidential tax records of another person/entity...whether one succeeded in obtaining them or not. Just as conspiracy to commit fraud or murder are crimes, whether one succeeds or not.
But according to you the documents could be fake. Just like if one plots to commit fraud or murder against say a fictional character like Betty Crocker, it's probably not a crime.

They certainly can...and there is no proof that the records obtained by the Times are in fact Trumps true, correct, and complete returns. If they are, the Times itself has admitted that a crime was committed by the person or entity that disclosed them.
Really? The Times illegally obtained fake documents? If they're fake, what laws were violated in the obtaining of them? Anyway, Trump is no longer claiming that they're fake. Or, at least, not currently.

It's not the duty of "law abiding citizens" in the U.S. to prove their innocence of anything...that privilege is reserved for the people of the People's Republic of China, North Korea, and even some Western European legal regimes. It's very apparent you are no legal or tax expert...and that the only crime that's been committed here is by the person or persons who gave these confidential records to the New York Times (hopefully they will be found and prosecuted (civilly and criminally).
You're applying the standards of a criminal trial to a matter of public concern. There's a good reason that those safeguards are in place. They're there to protect citizens against the power of the government to fine and imprison them. Not appropriate standards for someone in public office.

But Trump claimed those "confidential records" were fake. So what crime are you proposing that they committed?

Yea, I don’t doubt the Times will drip out a little more each day and save something big for a couple days before the election.
Well Trump can forestall that by releasing all that information now, can't he?

Just to be clear.
But if you're so concerned about the behavior of relatives why not focus a bit of your attention on the fact that Jared Kushner's family got bailed out of a terrible investment by means of a sweetheart deal financed by the Qatari government. Unlike Hunter Biden, Jared is an official member of the US government.

Was Joe Biden well aware of Hunter's Ukraine business interests, at a time he was responsible for American policy in the Ukraine? If so, did he lie about not knowing it? Do State Department released documents exist that show Biden snr was briefed about concerns of conflicts of interest? Did Obama know?
Or is it all fake news?
You seem impervious to the fact that the Senate Report, despite every political motivation do to so, came up empty. And those questions were addressed in that inquiry. Everyone involved said that Biden did nothing to thwart an investigation and scrupulously carried out US policy.

1 minute ago, Baerboxer said:The Russian female oligarch who wired $3.5 million to Hunter Biden was married to a former Moscow Mayor. She obviously is well connected with the current Russian regime.
Yet, as with Burisma in the Ukraine, most of the media aren't interested.
I saw a report that said Biden lied when he denied discussing business with his son and that state department officials had raised the conflict of interest issues with him. Again, seems most media aren't interested as it gets quietly swept under the carpet.
But, as you post, all repeat the allegations against Trump, as proven facts. Makes the US IRS look like incompetent fools, which I don't think is the reality. Far from it.
Once again, Senator Ron Johnson tried mightily to come up with any evidence against Joe Biden concerning the Ukraine. Complete fail.

Given Trump's propensity for attack, attack and attack, these debates will likely be exchanges of allegations and bitter comment. Low class politics.
Such as. Republican Senator and ardent right wing supporter of Donald Trump released his report about the Bidens and the Ukraine. Absolutely zero evidence was offered that might incriminate Joe Biden.
And if you want to see Biden's tax info, it's posted on the internet.
So what exactly are you referring to?

13 minutes ago, Thomas J said:What a crock of S**t. Biden son gets $3.5 million from a Russian mayor but somehow the issue is how much Trump paid in taxes. Let me clue you in. NO ONE ESCAPES PAYING LEGITIMATE TAXES IN THE USA. If Trump enterprises lost money in prior years, it is legitimately allowed to deduct from any earnings the amount of the losses until such time as it makes a net profit. Additionally if the Trump organization is structured as a C corporation, Trump would have income exclusively from any money the corporation paid to him as wages. The corporation not Donald Trump would pay any income taxes. So without knowing the entire story it is just trying to create the illusion that Donald Trump somehow did not pay taxes. They did the same thing with Romney and saying he did not pay any income taxes. Not true. The IRS if Trump owed taxes would be all over him like a rabid dog.
Looks like the same old Democratic Smear tactic. Claim something causing your opponent to try to defend it and have the media broadcast it to give it legs.

"As IRS researchers highlighted in a recent report, is that the United States lost an average of nearly $400 billion per year in unpaid taxes from 2011 to 2013. Moreover, over the past decade, Congress has made the problem much worse. It has given the IRS new responsibilities while sharply cutting the agency’s budget. The IRS has lost more than one-third of its enforcement personnel."

The 3 largest states are all LIBERAL and the most populated thank god there is the electoral college or they would be pushing their liberal agenda on very conservative states who live the exact opposite of their lives.
The fact remains it is the States that decide the President not the majority of the majority of the population and it has worked perfectly for 200 odd years for the USA
And it will work PERFECTLY again in November when whoever wins will win the Electoral College because nothing else counts.Neither in terms of population nor area is that true. California and Texes are the 2 largest states in terms of population and electoral votes. New York and Florida come next and are tied. Are you claiming that Florida and Texas are liberal? Maybe you should reserve judgement about the USA until you get a little better acquainted with reality there.

Oh wait, no, that was Hunter Biden, and the NYT didn't even report it."
And Hunter Biden is running for President? And did you read Republican Senator Ron Johnson's report? Even though Johnson tried as hard as he could he produced absolutely no evidence produced to show Joe Biden helped his son. And unlike Hunter Biden Jaraed and Ivanka actually hold official governmental posts? Jared's family benefited from a billion dollar bailout at least partially financed by Qatar. And Ivanka nabbed quite a few trademarks in record time from the Chinese govt.

Try getting a top level clearance in the FBI, CIA, Army, Navy, etc etc if you have debt problems.
Especially if those debt are owed to foreign entities. Trump got bailed out by Deutsch Bank. Deutsch Bank does lots of business with the Russians. And Trump has never personally criticized Putin.

Obama has behaved disgracefully for a retired President, he should have kept quiet. Continuous stream of mud has been thrown at Trump to make him look bad at every turn and that is sad. He won a democratic election and in a free democracy the tactics used by the opposition are part of that freedom, I dont like it but it comes with the territory in the end we will see if it succeeds or Trump get a second term. I hope he gets it for the tactics being used against him and I see Biden as being a puppet for the Obama's and the Clinton's but that me view. You are all free to agree or disagree but remember what free speech is. Freedom of speech is my right to tell you things you dont want to hear.
