  1. Hi,

My wife's passport expired in December. We live in Perth WA and went to the consulate this week to renew it. Unfortunately the Perth consulate only does renewals once a year when the mobile processing team travel to Perth which was last week.

We have investigated our possible options however most take time and will not allow us to travel to Thailand in August. The options are:

    1. Travel to Sydney or Canberra to put in application however this can take up to 3 months which is too long

    2. Apply for citizen ship however this can take more than 3 months also

    3. Apply for an emergency passport

    4. Travel to Thailand with Thai Airways on an expired passport.

I think option 1 & 2 are definitely out due to the time restrictions.

Does anyone have any experience with applying for an Emergency Passport while in Australia. The lady at the consulate said they are only issued for real emergencies but what warrants this. She told us of people being refused because they lied about a family member having cancer or being sick. The only excuse we have is that it is a complete oversight. We don't travel that much so the passport has been stored and we didn't realise it had expired. Is this a good enough excuse? We have a 2.5 year old who has only been to Thailand once when 6 months old so thought this may be a good reason as he has not had much of an opportunity to spend with his grand parents and Thai heritage.

Does anyone have any experience with option 4. I have read that Thai airways will allow a Thai National to travel with an expired passport. What happens at Australian Customs when leaving the country and is this standard procedure across the country (ie some airports may let you leave with an expired passport but others may not).

My wife is a Permanent Resident (spouse) and has been for about 6 years.

We are very restricted due to work commitments when we can take leave so August is the only time we can travel back to Thailand.

Any advice or previous experience would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

  2. Hi,

It is our last day in Thailand and we need to renew my wife's license if possible today. I have tried to search the web but all info is about expats getting a license.

She lives in Sam Phran, Nakhon Pathom. What govt dept do we need to go to and is there one close by. I think there may be an office near Mahidol Uni near Salaya.

What is the process and does it take very long. My wife is not being very helpful with info as it has been left to the last minute and does not want to be stressed out on her last day. It is all my fault of course. LOL.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

  3. My son was born in Perth Oz. We are currently in Thailand and want to add our son to my wife's house registration. We have received conflicting information from several people. Has anyone done this before?

We have been told we need to get a stamp from our embassy on his Oz birth certificate, then get this translated, go to a govt department near Laksi (Not sure which dept but assume something like births deaths and marriages), get a stamp from here and then take it to our local amphur wife the house owner (father in law) and they will add my son.

We went to Oz embassy and got the stamp today. Went to get the document translated and was told here this is not the correct process. According to them we need to go to the Thai consulate in Oz (not possible for me as there is not one in Perth). They will give us a 13 digit number. Not sure if they give us a Thai birth certificate. We then just take this to the local amphur and they will add my son.

My wife has just called a government dept to get more info. They were not helpful and did not know and just said come in and we will let you know. My wife tried to explain the whole reason for calling was so we did not waste our time when we came. Very frustrating!

If someone has done this before I would greatly appreciate info. Not sure if this is in the correct forum but if not could a mod move it please.

  4. My traditional Thai wedding cost 300,000 baht with about 400 guests that I didn't know! This was in 2009 and in Sam Phran just west of Bangkok. The best day of my life!

The same wedding in Oz would have cost AUD$50,000 at least. This was not at a Hilton though but a small private resort by the river. I could not imagine spending so much money on a wedding and agree with other posters that you could use the money more wisely. But each to their own. Good luck with the planning. You have plenty of time!

  5. My wife changed her last name to mine after getting married. It was a bit of a hassle to do. Just went to her local Amphur to do it. It took about 3 hours all up. Most of that time was waiting. The head of the Amphur did try to talk her out of it though. My Thai language skills are very limited and I was sitting in the the head of the Amphurs office (had to get his signature) and he was talking quite sternly to my wife. I asked her after we walked out what that was all about and she said that he was asking her why she wanted to change her name, if she was sure and that it would make things more difficult in the future, plus that I would be entitled to half of what she owned etc. I was pretty angry and said I wished I had understood as I would have put him in his place.

True what a previous post says that some Thais don't like it.
