  2. What an excellent thread and some lovely pictures Ian, many thanks.

We have been to Chang Mai on several occasions over the years and have always enjoyed it but don't know it as well as Bangkok or Phuket, looks like we're going to have to spend some more time there.

  4. I am an acupuncturist & yes it is effective for people wishing to stop smoking, it works by easing withdrawal symptoms such as craving & also helps to calm nerves & speed up the removal of nicotine from the blood stream.

The one thing it can't do is give you will power but is great for those people who really do wish to give up but need help.

One treatment a week for 4 weeks is generally all thats required. Ear points are what most acupuncturists use in conjunction with 'press needles' inserted in 1 or 2 points in each ear which are gently rubbed for a few seconds when when you feel the urge to smoke. My personal sucess rate for a course of treatment is 95%.

  5. Its crazy. They kick out a traditional Thai wife and let Muslims run around bombing us !

Breaks your heart that what you have said is 100% true.

Surely it should be an British persons right to marry and bring back anyone they want.

The truth is the British government don't want to hear anyone elses opinion on anything, no wonder most British can,t be assed to vote anymore, most feel that it's futile to do so.

  6. Very sobering thoughts from reading the previous posts, in the end for me, it's not how long you live but how well you live that matters.

Unfortunatly we all arrive at the end of the road but who wants to linger for years suffering half an existance, only each of us as individuals can make that choice when the time comes.

  7. The worst thing is that there is no street vendors in the U.K. You cant do what I am just about to do and pop out across the road to get a plate of kaow moo daeng or a bowl of Sen mee naam sai.

I envy you M8, but enjoy yourself coz if i was there i'd be doing the same as you.

  8. There are many roads you could travel but your wifes idea seems sound - living her full time may not be the vacation you expect and nothing lost if you decide to leave. If you are legally married you only need one deposit of 800k and the spouse receives a matching extension of stay without any financial requirement. But some officers may want the 800k to be in the retirement extension persons name only.

You could also do the process in the UK with the money staying in the UK for the first year. It requires a little more paperwork and probably have to work with London Embassy but not a problem as you are in the UK anyhow - that way you enter Thailand and receive a one year permitted to stay at opening bell - no reason you can not change your mind at any time and no bank account required.

Money that has been wire transfered in should not be a problem sending out.

Many thanks for your sound advice lopburi3

  9. My UK wife & I have been to Thailand many times for holidays & now having reached 50 we would like to explore the possiblity of retiring here but my wife is a little more cautious than myself.

I have suggested that we get 1 year multi entry 'O' visa here in the UK & come to Thailand & have a look around and to get a more hands on feel for living here and the after about 8 months if everything working out fine, transfere 800,000 baht (each) into our Thai bank account & then apply to immigration for an extention of stay based on retirement after the

money has been in the account for 3 months. Is it OK to do this or is there a better or another way?

We would be going the lump sum route rather than the pension and thats the main reason why she wants to have a better feel for living here before transfereing the money as she is concerned that they may be some difficulty either tranfering the residual money back to the Uk if things didn't work out.

I'm under the belief that there should be no problem if you can prove the money came from abroad, am I correct?

    Any help/comments would be appreciated

  10. My UK wife & I have now both reached 50 and we are considering retiring to LOS this year.

I'm familier with the 800,000 baht lump sum or 65,000 baht per month pension requirements (which I can meet) but would like to know that if my wife came with me as my dependent, what would be the financial requirements for her.

It's my understanding that she would have to leave the country every 90 days if she came as my dependent.

Any advice would be most welcome.

  11. Well it looks late in the day to get a Tourist Visa, so now you're just going to get a 30 day VOA 30 day stamp (with a short extension available still)at the Bangkok airport. While you're here you can decide on where to go for your Tourist Visa (60 day with an available 30 day extension) which will usually entail an overnight in a neighboring country. You can look around the board as to which country will suit best. Ninety days later, you can make another Tourist Visa trip, and you'll be all set. If you're going to be here for 6 months, these trips can be a nice way to see a few of the surrounding countries (Laos, etc.) Even with all of the Visa hoo-ha going on, this Visa regimen should have no problems.

calibanjr, is it possible to do this back to back so one could stay for a year at a time if you wanted to?

    Thanx, Spiritman :o

  12. My wife (UK) & I have just reached 50 and we intend to obtain a single entry "O" visa here in the UK & change it to a Retirement visa in Thailand.

    The questions are:

    1) Do we need to show 800,000 each which we have (we have no pension, income will be from property rentals in UK) or will my wife be classed as a dependant?

    2) Is it OK to open a joint bank account in LOS and have both lots of funds in it or would this cause a problem with immigration?

    Rgds, Spiritman
