  1. Dont all the schools teach directly in Thai?

No. A good number of them make a strong use of English language during class and/or on books and exercises. They usually have no (few?) Russian student ;)

Lot of schools use the "transliteration" thing. A kind of phonetic translation in an imaginary language. Really a bad way to learn I thing. Better to make a good effort at the beginning and learn the Thai alphabet. Not so hard as you could think.

These are 2 reasons why you must make a try in a school before signing for several months or a year!

  2. Indeed. Sensationalist.

They are obviously at the police station where they surely would not be gambling and given their vests (not worn inside) they have come from somewhere else and are displaying stuff found.

    I agree with you Petercool,

but many members are fully irrational as soon Thai police or corruption is involved.

Far better to make big buzz with a photo taken out of is real context...

Gambling inside the police office during service! Please be serious. Even in Thailand it's a big NO NO.

  3. The staff there, although not there department knew all about the police scam, they advised my wife that the police need to have a papers to enter the property to investigate playing music without licence if they do not have such refuse them entry and call the local police as the scamers are usually police from out of the area not on shift trying to make extra money. it was explained it is not a police matter but private matter.

    Hi,

I was about to reply when I read that. That is exactly what a manager from a bar in WS area reported some weeks ago. He knows rules and refused them to access their music computer. As they insisted he called the local police. BK Police (or probably false policemen?) left without waiting their local collegues...

Sometime corruption continues just because victims don't know their rights.

  4. You can ask at the electric company to take the money direct from your account.

Hi. I think about using this option because I may be absent at some times next months.

What is the way to get it?

I imagine a form at the Electric Company to be then given at my bank?

or maybe first an authorisation at my Bank to be given at Electric Company?

  5. Do you know whereabouts in Big C it is located, and what their service times are?

Yes, I renew here last 2 years ;)

You go upstairs (by right or left) but do not enter in the shop itself; take the path between all cashier-desks and some small shops, it run all the long from one enter to the other.

Nearly at the middle there were 2 peoples with tables, computer, printer and a pile of green book ;)

Not sure of exact times; always heard "every Saturday morning"

    Easy and quick :)

  6. Lastly, could someone please provide directions to the DMV.

Look at this map : https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Pattaya+Tai&daddr=Unknown+road&hl=en&ll=12.933463,100.928822&spn=0.143047,0.119305&sll=12.924951,100.878353&sspn=0.017881,0.014913&geocode=FZ5BxQAdrjkDBg%3BFTPjxQAdRLYEBg&t=h&mra=me&mrsp=0,1&sz=16&z=13

You have to go there to renew your license,

but without that you could renew mandatory insurane + yearly registration

at their temporary office at Big C (Pattaya Tai/Sukhumvit) every Saturday morning.

  7. Hi TramsRepus

I can believe that there is no very high-end computer shop in Tuckom, the market is not so big for them in Pattaya, but for mid/high-end computer shops you should find all the most recent & popular components in shops like Banana IT of Hardaware House. Just chose your configuration, go drink a coffe, and come back take your new mounted super computer :)

IT City, on top floor, use to have brand name ready-to-use computers, some of them with strong configuration aimed to games. Some people prefer this way, even if more expensive.

  8. ... the fake taxi meters which also are strictly on inflated charter fares.

We took a taxi not long ago in front of The Avenue after a night movie.

A Thai friend talked to the driver and he used the meter. No problem.

About 50 baht to her place on Pattaya Klang.

If you have a problem, please note the number on the taxi side and report it at 1337. The only way to stop abuses.

  9. Yes, good fun another problem is with traffic, parking is a nightmare the times i have been there, same with the long boats.

Don't understand: they organize a big park area near the lake. Hundreds of motorbikes there. And at the left of the buffalo race area is a large area where you can park it to. Easy.

  10. I am not certain there is a market for this new style tablet here in Thailand, barring perhaps the education segment ;)

Why not? I don't see it for education. Too small. It's more a device to be used at home or daily trips. IT shops already sell huge number of tablets in Thailand, from Cube or "no name" Chinese table at 3,000 baht to iPad at 10 times this price. I bet there is a market for this nice small device in every country :)

We have had access to the Play Store (nee Android Market) here in Thailand for both free and paid applications for quite a long time now.

No. As I said before, you only have access to the "Store for Apps" part,

you don't have access by exemple at the "Store for Devices" part. See message #12

  11. Tiles 80 Bht x 40 sqm = 3200 Baht

    80 baht/sqm ??? I wouldn't want them even to put in a toilet!

He is talking of a condo, and wants to live in ;)

I didn't find any tiles acceptable for a condo at less than 300 baht/sqm,

the ones I am looking at for my condo are about 500-600

and you quickly climb to 1,000 /sqm if you look for nice and quality...

  12. I think the drivers passed out pictures of me ( biggrin.png )

because they got to the point that they wouldn't stop when I tried to flag them down.

I have a friend who had the same situation. No taxi stopped when he was alone in front of VT2 smile.png

He is living in VT2 and wanted to still pay 10 baht to go to the booling near Big C.

He now pays 20 baht and taxi accept again to stop for him wink.png

Look like many taxis consider today that the 10 baht limit from Jomtien is Royal Garden.

Not so long ago it was ok for Central Beach Festival...

  13. davidst01, you should first say where you stay in Pattaya. wink.png

School is a place you will go several times a week and it's very convenient to have one near or easy-accessed from your home.

Then you should look for ED-visa schools in this area. They are far cheaper and many are good ones smile.png .Most will accept you for a trial so that you can see how they teach and if you like the way and place. A good thing with ED-Visa school is they usually have course for 8 or 12 students, but as many people only want the visa you often have no more than 3 or 4 students in class, and that is a very good thing to learn. smile.png

Normal school are often about 25,000 baht/1 year while ED school price in Pattaya is always falling. Most are below 15,000 and I saw some of them below 10,000!

I use one ED-school. Whe usually are 2,3 or 4 students. All is in Thai. The book is in Thai with just English translation in the "new words" sections. When the Book 1 is finish the course restart from page 1, until you get the level for Book 2. You have to read, understand, speak, remember. A good way, at least for me.

Check and try several schools and take the one that correspond to you.

  14. May I know where are located the cheapest Thai language school at Pattaya ?

    Hi,

Look on Google.com with "pattaya ed visa school".

There is a good list on pattaya-funtown.com too : http://www.pattaya-funtown.com/visa_education.html

Thai school price go down month after month at Pattaya. :)

You will easily find places at 18,000 baht or less

but in your case I would look for one that not only aims at beginners.

  15. My main complaint is that // several dire non-English channels have appeared.

    Isn't that called selfishness ? dry.png

Many foreigners in Thailand found that there is already way too many English channels compared to others languages. Main lack certainly is for Hispanophones.

As everybody here, I now have more channels available. My TV scan found 81. New channels for Russians, Indians, Arabes, ... About 75 channels have good quality reception. smile.png I am in South Pattaya not far from Tukcom.

My concern is about HBO whose reception is "poor" and National Geo who is very bad sad.png

  16. Most long term residents know where to get bang for their baht.

You can still get 45 baht draught beers and 50 baht bottles in bars every bit as good as the ones charging 125 baht a bottle.

Better go on Walking Street if you had to pay these prices at your places!

Hallo on Walking street - by example - has a 29 baht draught beer from 8pm to 1am :)

Looks like some old expats like looking nice ladies dancing while drinking cheap beer...

and always a cheap place for everything on Walking Street!
