My experience with Thai hospitals has been extremely great overall; mind you I actually dealt with only one hospital; the Bangkok Hospital of Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road when you head North outta town so I have no idea how it's like everywhere else, nationwide. With that being said, I have used them 7 or 8 times, I have never had to pay upfront for anything nor being asked how would I be paying them each and every time (I always pay CASH, this is Thailand CASH IS KING, insurances are for suckers). Clear signs of financial stability. With that being said as well, I think that they've always been very cool with me might have to do with the fact that; - They have had my details registered in their systems since my very first visit in 2010. - The first visit I produced a blue house registration book for our house (where we used a loophole as advised by Pattaya City Hall officials on how to add a foreigner name on a blue book without the need to make a yellow book, but I digress). Anyhow my point being; even though all I do is visas on arrivals back to back and abuse the <deleted> outta the extensions and visa runs back and forth to Laos, MY name is registered as a resident on a Thai blue "tabian baan" so the hospital KNOWS where to find me, should the need arise. - I have never changed my official address since I've set a foot in Thailand for the very first time in 2010. Clear signs of stability. TL;DR: They are not concerned that I might be a candidate to do a runner and both my Thai kids were born in that hospital as well. I think what I'm trying to say here is, in Thailand just like on a lot of different places in the World; Trust is to be earned, not given. Mind you my highest bill was 135,000 baht paid CASH everything else has always been minor stuff less than 15,000 baht, but again I'm sure they'd know where to find me IF they needed to locate me. Pay your bills with a smile, on time, every single time and don't be a dreg. If you want to be respected, EARN RESPECT.

More seriously though... it's good to see things are potentially going back to their "normal". Note as stated in the video it appears there's a 11PM curfew no one seems to abide to and clearly not enough police forces to enforce any "rules" anyway (as you can see at around 5:53 in the video, 1 single BiB and 1 single tourist police guy). I'm not going to drag this any further along and claim that "Thailand is back!" but I must admit these few early signs are... "encouraging" to say the least. A picture is worth a thousands words so have a good watch as this was filmed last night and uploaded to YouTube just a few hours ago. Meanwhile in Pattaya... ZZZ nothing.

My way to solve this: Don't retire to Thailand or do it with visas on arrival and extensions back to back from a known GOOD passport: - Argentina, - Peru, - Chile or - Brasil. It will be so cheap; it will be FREE. TL;DR: You can take your British passport and throw it in a dumpster. It is now worthless.

While I don't have anything specific to share about Peru itself, it should be noted that Peru is one of the 5 visa-free countries that have access to Thailand. That means should you spend at least 5 uninterrupted years in Peru, you then would most likely be eligible for the Peruvian citizenship, the Peruvian passport has a 90 days visa-free access to Thailand (through the Visa on Arrival program), should you wish to return to Thailand at some point later in your life... Life is an adventure.

Using my "guidance" that's a total of 90+60=150x2=300 out of 365 days in Thailand per year is pretty solid. In my personal case, I only had to spend 381 days in Brazil until I went from being a stranger to the country to having the full citizenship and a BR passport in my hand. Since then: - I never pay any fees at any Thai embassies or consulates around the World, - I have zero contact with them even, - I don't need to call them, - I don't need to email them, - I don't pay any visa fees or give them a single dime, - I don't have the hassle of mailing my passport and waiting for days to get it back, my passport is mine and stays with me 24/7, - I don't have to overpay dodgy agents, - I don't have to worry about having a fake stamp in my passport, - I don't bribe immigration officers, - I don't have to worry about the TM30 (as I have to go in person anyway to get my extensions), - I don't have to contract an insurance (pre-COVID era), - I don't need to make the same copies of the same paperwork year after year, - I don't need to open a Thai bank account and "lock" either 400k or 800k or (soon to be) even more in for an useless visa, - I don't have to follow all the new changes and regulations regarding the immigration laws, - I am not at the mercy of the Thai immigration bureaucracy and it's constant changes, So, respectfully are you sure paying 20k every year a dodgy agent is "cheaper" and "easier" let alone "safer"? I think not. However: I do pay 3800 baht a year for two 2 months extensions, that is literally it.

Hey old pal, may I kindly suggest you take a quick look at Nicosia or Limassol on your return? You could get a very cheap condo with a view and warm weather all year around. Sure it won't be as exotic as Thailand but at least you'd be back in good ole' Europe. My hearts goes to you. Stay safe.
