The Minister for Non-Tourism.
In the twenty odd years that I have been spending 3-4 months in what used to qualify as the "Land of Smiles" Thailand has turned FULL circle. Initially I came for a bit of work, now I'm a sun seeking tourist who is not particularly hard up. Not particularly into sleeze (a bit) and not a drunkard of more than moderate+ levels.
I remember the Baht in the 90s for £1 and the cost of a bottle of Singha usually around 60-65 in most bars. I couldn't quite believe it!
Gradually, and for various reasons, exchange rates didn't just become less favourable they were turned on their head. It was all still acceptable though (just) until airport taxi drivers started blatantly asking, "How much you give me?" with the meter off. Dual pricing and rip-offs became more rife, and you had to watch your 'bin' because the 'chit' was often exaggerated.
I could go on. No room on this forum.
Then we had the military, police rip-offs of tourist in the street (ciggy-butt police) and more and more restrictions which meant you could no longer, for example, watch the sunrise beside a Sukhumvit caravan bar after a few hours of gentle sipping and marvellous company.
The Land of Smiles became the Land of the Puritans.
Now, whilst all around them open up they are still on the make, delude themselves that they are a special case and still think that it is they doing the customer (tourist) a favour rather than the other way around.
The penny will not drop. Times have changed forever.
