Why invest in a country with a fragile economy run by a militiry wannabe <deleted>?

Stick to safe reliable blue chip shares that pay regular dividends. If you want a list of solid UK shares reply to me.

Would be interested to hear your views on the blue chip shares paying regular dividends, many thanks

    Private investments are not work.

Some banks has online platforms to buy and sell stocks realtime at SET. I'm using SCB, and just you have a SCB account with ATM, you can easily open a SCBS-online account as foreigner (not a recommendation, just example, as I know about this one). When trading as foreigner you shall buy with the NVDR-option – no voting rights, can be set as default in SCBS-online platform, and probably also platforms from other banks – then you can freely trade. Moving money into your SET-account is instantly (within banking hours), taking money out, takes about 5 banking day before the money appear in your ATM account. Dividends are paid directly into your ATM account, less 10% withholding dividend tax.

I've been doing SET trading for a while – I'm a long term trader, no day trading – and SET has so far performed fine for me (of course depending of what you choose in your profolio), both for dividends and gains; I'm also trading abroad, so I have something to compare with, and little experience. A benefit is, that your investments and dividends are in Thai baht, if you are staying here and going to use the outcome in Thai baht, rather than speculating abroad with a risk for negative currency exchange rate deviations.

    Thank you

His question is valid given the silliness of modern day Thailand.  Attending a non government sponsored trade show use to be considered working.  Believe exhibiting does require permission from the government for non Thais without Thai work permits.  No other Asian country does this, just the this one.

Thanks for your reply and comments Yellowboat

  6. I am living in Thailand on a Retirement Visa and am interested in investing in the Thai Stock Exchange, more as a hobby than anything else.  Am I able to do this freely or would it be considered as working?  Wouldn't like to do anything that could cause me any problems!  Thanks in advance for any positive comments or advice.

  7. I recommend that you obtain a non-immigrant 'O' (or even better, non-imm. O-A) visa before you come to Thailand. The reason is that with 'O' you will avoid the process and cost of converting your Tourist visa or visa exempt entry, that not all offices do, and that may require you do multiple visits to Immigration to obtain the extensions again.

And with the non-imm. O-A you would not need the extension at all for two years.

All that said, my recommendation is that if possible, you do not interrupt the consecutiveness of your retirement extensions, because if and when Thailand raises the financial requirement, having done so may grandfather you to the current ones, as it has happened twice already in the past.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, appreciated

  8. Good evening. I realise that you cannot renew your retirement visa but let me explain my situation. My partner and I have lived in Thailand for a number of years and we both hold retirement visas and comply with all the requisites i.e 800.000 in the bank etc. We have applied for our retirement visas on the 2nd August every year for the last 6 or 7 years, never missing, never late. At the moment we are in Europe and due to personal reasons were unable to return to Thailand in time to renew our visas by the 2nd August.

It looks as though we will not be able to return to Thailand before the end of September or beginning of October so I imagine that we will have lost our retiremenet visas and will have to start the whole process again. My question is, what is our best option:

Should we return to Thailand and obtain a 30 day visa upon arrival and then proceed to our local immigration office as soon as possible to apply for our new retirement visas or

Should we apply for a 2 month tourist visa before we depart Europe and, with that, proceed to our local immigration office?

I guesss that in both cases we will be asked to show proof of a return ticket or will not be allowed into the country.

The local Thai Embassy here suggested that we apply for a new retirement visa before we head back to Thailand however it is impossible to do that as you cannot obtain the necessary letters and statements from the bank in Thailand when you are overseas.

Woud really appreciate any help or advice and thank you in advance.

  9. Evidently, as many comments underline it, important information is not given.

If we have to prepare for One meter to one meter and a half water surge from which "ground" to we have to count this height ? from the klong ? From the road ? from the sea level ? It makes huge differences for me as I am situated one meter more above the klong level but one meter under the road level...

There are a lot of different ground levels in one 'khet' a map of the really "at risk" places could have been done by authorities (even though, I know, they are busy elsewhere... but they could mobilize students in geography, or whoever, to do so...).

Besides these considerations, I am surprised (well, not that much in fact) that Thailand does not have a proper water management system : Monsoon has been going on here for quite a while. Deforestation and urbanization worsened the problem... And nothing serious seemed to have been done by any government might it be democrat or Thaksinian.

I worry much about the crisis aftermath : economic recovery will be extremely hard, will need a lot of money coming form abroad (which, by the way could lessen a bit the pressure on Europe) with certain impact on the baht. There might also be forced unemployment (if japanese industries decide not to take anymore risks for the years to come and relocate elsewhere in Asia for example) and social unrest.

By the way, the political promises made during the campaign will be forgotten : 300 hundred baht a day ? Forget it ! Bad for recovery ! I-pads for students ? Forget it ! Bad for national reconstruction !

And who will be responsible ? Rain ? Water management officials ? Prime Minister ? Dharma ? Spirits ? Each and every Thai ?

Will there be any "sustainable and responsible" water management policy ? Will Bangkok's urban development plans be reviewed ? (Condos of over 50 floors weight a lot... nothing is done to enhance a sensible way of managing the problem).

Well, all in all, it is Thai people's (and not only thai elite) problem and I am quite happy to be out of such political mess. May they make a good choice, they'll be the only responsible for it anyway.

I also hope there will not be any violence towards foreigners living in Thailand... (which could be understandable given the situation and the ideology... but not forgivable).

I dont understand why there should be any violence towards foreigners living in Thailand due to the flood situation - or am I missing something here? Perhaps someone could explain.

  10. I will not re-think that for a nanosecond. On 21 November 1990, a Bangkok Airways de Havilland Canada DHC-8-103 crashed on Koh Samui while attempting to land in heavy rain and high winds. All 38 people on board perished. That has been their only serious accident to date. The two other accidents they had in the past 30 years resulted on one fatality. Not bad. They are an excellent airline, with good equipment, and an excellent safety record. However, they had no business landing in that weather. Apparently, Samui is subject to wind shear, and the wind was really gusting at that time. They should have either stayed in the air, and circled the airport until things calmed down, which it did 30 minutes later, or they should have landed in Surat Thani, and waited out the storm.

I totally agree with you and whilst our thoughts are with the pilot and his family at this very sad time why is it that pilots still try to land planes when weather conditions are so dangerous.

  11. Message to the red shirts from an angry resident!

Leave us alone with your red B_S_

    You are wrong!

Abhisit has earned RESPECT from the world for handling this red anarchy and violent booze stampede with utmost caution to avoid blood in the streets what you

want to see! Thailand is not the world. READ and WATCH what the world has to say! There's a world behind the Thai border!

You can be proud of your Fuhrer who was stuttering. lying and whining on TV last night.

Leave us alone with your red B_S_, we want peace!

I was amazed that the BBC took the time to interview the person who is intent on destroying peace in Thailand, it almost gave him some credibility however anyone with the slightest bit of intelligence would not believe a word he said.

Khun Abhisit has earned the respect of both the Thai people and the outside world in his handling of all matters since he became Prime Minister a short while ago. His job is not easy. Thailand should be proud to have a Prime Minister like Abhisit who is educated, caring and is determined to do the best he can for Thailand and all of its people and not simply for his own personal gain. It would be a terrible blow to the country if he were not given the chance to continue the good work that he has started.

  12. Not sure if I read all this right... does it mean that on Saturday night you can't go out and have a drink with your meal? And does it mean that on the weekend there will be loads of people out on the roads, drinking alcohol they bought at other times? Not quite sure how this is going to work...

The over 40 thing... maybe it would work if people who are actually qualified can keep their jobs, seems a bit over the top...

Has anyone realised that it is April 1st and all this could just be a joke - I cannot believe that anyone could be serious about banning anyone under 40 from giving a massage!!!!

  13. I am renovating an older Thai house in Phuket and am finding it difficult to source some of the things I need. Next week I am going to Bangkok for a few days to look for shops, outlets etc that sell traditional Thai lights and lamps, especially wall lamps - can anyone help?

  14. Before Citibank decided to charge a three percent fee on ATM transactions I used my Citibank ATM card for living expenses. I faced a lot of questions from immigration as to where my money for living expenses was coming from. That problem has now gone away because I now use wire transfers that show in my bank book. If you can't show money coming in from a foreign source, you may face a lot of questions.

Hi Gary A and thanks for your comment. Its not that I cant show money coming in from a foreign source but I dont want to bring more in if there is sufficient already here. I'm concerned that by using part of the 800k during the year when its not needed in the account it will not be acceptable when I credit it back to the account. However, the money originated from overseas and I have the documentation to prove that so hopefully there wont be a problem.
