  1. Having moved from Thailand to the UK, we are finding it hard to find good nappies for our son...

In Thai he used to wear mamy poko pull ups. He is 11 months and very active, he has also started walking. But he is not that big and no way fat (about 7 kilos). It seems impossible to find any pull up nappies for babies under 9 kilos! (and most are for 11kg +) The choice in general only seems to be huggies / pampers / supermarket own.

Has anyone else found a way around this? At the moment he uses normal pampers and they just don't seem to be as good.

    Cheers,

Other than that though he has settled into the UK fine :o

  2. Pattaya itself can be quite grim during the day... too much traffic, pollution and building work. But thats the only time I see it really. Me and my wife moved here a year ago from Rayong as its easier for me to go kitesurfing in Jomtien and having english speaking hospitals for our new born son. Luckily we are the other side of sukhumvit so its nice and quiet, got a pool etc.

But yes its important to have a hobby! I find with kitesurfing here I have a good group of people, both thai and farang from all different backgrounds / social levels. Get a nintendo wii too - you will find it very hard to go outside after playing one :o

still we are moving to Devon in the UK at the weekend, so had better make the most of the heat now!

  3. if you can, go to koh samet on a friday / saturday for a night or two... you might have to book, but you will see some much nicer beaches and it ca be a good night out too (not so much in the downtown pattaya way, but busy with some good bars).

  4. I did the Wii upgrade a couple of days ago and the firmware is 3.0U - everything on the net seems to say I will be ok running the update.

and it seems I need a certain type of LG reader to image the Wii disc and add brickblocker to the ISO - so I will have to bite the bullet and say yes to the upgrade.

hi, you don't get a problem on an american chipped wii doing the metroid prime 3 update. I did it with firmware 2.2U and all is fine. Infact it doesn't update to firmware 3. If you do it on a PAL wii it adds an extra forcast and news(?) channel that can't be deleted, but still works. I have also read that you can't use brick blocker on it as its a small update and brick blocker removes part of the game data by the way it wipes over a set size area allocated for updates.

Just play it, its a very sweet game! :o

  5. I gave in and bought an american chipped wii... The thing is fantastic! I have owned a lot of consoles in the UK and was slowly going off them. But after finishing super paper mario and being about 5 hours off the end of zelda I can say I haven't been as absorbed in games for a long time! I still have to play resident evil 4, metroid, excite truck and the the new mario etc...

I go back to the uk soon, but am glad I have an american console as the european releases are so far behind. I am thinking of buying a uk one just for the VC / online games. But am also thinking of an xbox 360 for halo 3 / half life orange box (but I am put off by the wmount of them breaking!)

The wii is the console that you can play with friends and family on multiplayer and all get into it though.

too many games and too little time :o:D

  6. LOL - my wife tells people that we still live in Rayong or Chon buri... I tell people that we live in Pattaya, although we are out in the suburbs... :o

I lived in Coventry in the UK for 15 years... if you want people to either commiserate with you or make their excuses that's the place to be from!!

  7. The Finepix F31 (only a small change to the F30) is still listed for sale on Fotofile's site in BKK.

the f31 is actually inferior to the f30..

There is, i believe, a new f40 just on the market.. reviews of it i've read don't indicate any improvements over the f30, except for the irrellevent pastime of megapixel counting. Anything over 5mp is ample for your ordinary joe

I think the f31 is the same camera as the f30, just with face detection... Some people say that the f40 is inferior as you lose the manual controls and have to rely on scene modes. They are a great camera although the shots look a bit too over processed compared to an SLR. But you can change the settings...

  8. the one at the very end is the one i've eaten in several times and while the food is great, the service is so-so with the waiters seeming to be rather slow walkers who seem to like to dawdle and chat with each other. haven't tried the one just before it on the left but will give it a try for the great food despite the subpar service.

Went to the one at the end and it was good. Food was great and pretty cheap. But as said before if you can go further afield there are some great seafood restraunts in Rayong and mae rampung beach :o

  9. hmm re-reading this i was thinking, could one just never update the firmware or would this directly tie into playing and downloading newer vc games? hmm guess no one would know this for sure at this point in time eh.. i got the wii but havent bought any games yet ( only a few vc n64 games) cause i am waiting 2 get back 2 bkk so i can unload on actual wii games.

I am no expert, but I have been doing a bit of research into getting a Nintendo and their region encoding. Some games have firmware updates built in and some people have had problems with this affecting their console. But I think its when trying to play a pal game on an ntsc console. It seems that some of the chips are fine with the new update, but some aren't - I don't know the best way to find out, but it wouldn't look good for the future...

One way would be to find some chipping instructions and try and remove it before you do the update and try and search the net to see if you need a new chip. But this then becomes a cat and mouse game every time there is an update.

there is a lot of info on some of the gaming forums about this, I guess jut not the main nintendo one :o

  10. Find a girl that thinks about the future rather than the here now....then you will have found a good one.

ha ha ha he he ho ho... Blimey, a sensible post :D

    very true...

lol have been trying for ages to convince my wife that a nintendo wii will be 'educational' for our son :o

and that new kitesurfing equipment is a necessity, like food :D

  11. I only asked about hiring a jet ski as i use one at home at the weekends never had any trouble etc, i thought i might find someone out there who knows the good from the bad ,

but all i get is people complianing .

i bet if i put where to find the best girls etc i would off got some good replys

sorry for wasting your time reading my questions

    pete

Ask at the windsurfing club shack on Jomtien beach nearly opposite surf bay (?) hotel and 7-11. Thats where we hired one from and everything was fine.

  12. We rented one off Jomtien beach last year or the year before. It was in good condition and went well. We ended up giving a guy a lift back to shore who had fallen off the back of an inflatable banana and no one noticed! :o

Jetskis are ok when towing an inflatable or a wakeboarder / waterskiier, but getting drunk and ragging them around is gonna end in tears...

  13. Ok after deciding that I was going to go to BKK and get a chipped American wii so that I would be able to use it in the UK in a few months, I started to read that there are issues with playing pal / nstc games on the other console...

    Also this taken from macrumors...

    Wii System Update

    stolen from gaf:

    Quote:

With the Wii's Shop Channel undergoing maintenance, a series of updates came up to accompany it. Most users will be able to make 2-3 updates with one of them bumping the firmware to 3.0. Here are the known changes so far:

    Channels:

-Digital Clock added to the Wii Menu right under the channel bar

-Forecast Channel now displays the current condition (cloudy, raining, etc.) directly in the Wii Menu in the Forecast Channel box

-News Channel can now show 2 scrolling headlines at a time in the Wii Menu, 3 when you click on the button (supposedly this requires occasional downloading of the headlines to keep the ticker updated)

-Message Board now has the "Today's Accomplishments" message as a white message which allows it to stand out from other messages

-Address Book entries can now be shifted around using A+B (supposed to be a launch feature) but only to empty spaces. Not too convenient.

-Calendar in Message Board no longer shows "Today's Accomplishment" only days as having messages

-Scrolling messages in the Message Board now uses a different sound

Wii Shop Channel Overhauled (Visual aesthetic is the same, changes made to organization and browsing methods mostly)

-New Welcome screen detailing 4 Recommended Titles and the points they cost (gone is the title screen bar that had linkable games). The title bar can be clicked on to bring up a list of 20 recommended games.

-Titles You've Downloaded was moved to the main shop menu

    -New ways to browse

-Popular Titles (2 pages of 10 and includes launch games so not only based on recent info)

    -Newest Additions remains the same

-Search for a title which can use partial names

    -Search by Category

-System shows the different systems and how many titles have been released under each

-Publisher showing different publishers and amount of titles released (Nice logos!)

-Genre (different genres listed and amount of titles under each)

    Settings

-Warning added pre-system update detailing that technically modified consoles may cease to function upon being updated. Also the only way to not accept an update is to power down the console by holding the button for 4 seconds (the user can't back out of hitting I Accept w/o powering down)

It looks like there could be problems with the firmware updates for chipped wiis!

Is there anywhere in BKK that sells euro ones? or do I just have to wait

Its either that or buy an American one and then have to source American games in the UK :D

    ###### Sony for suing lik-sang to oblivion! :o

  14. How does a person hear Turistas when Hairspray is said?

They most probably hear "blah blah blah.." while thinking about something different and think I will be helpful and say yes... :o

Try the "movies of the week" on pattaya people it seems to be the most up to date I have found.

P.S. Hostel is much better than touristas if you are in to your backpacker nightmare gore fest :D

  15. This is where it gets a bit dodgy. If nintendo decided that they had sold enough consoles, I am sure that there is a way that they could decide which ones / copies of games were legitimate on line. But the other side is that the console is cheap enough to buy 2 - 1 for on line and one for multi region moody single / party player games :o

but will they ever bother - who knows...

  16. If Firefox or Safari display garbage, I taught my wife to go to View -> Text Encoding and set it to Thai (Windows, DOS). That usually works even with the most horrific forums. And I am trying very hard here to not make a comment on Thai web design...

PS: Using Camino to post this - it's like a prettified Firefox and seems very fast. Worth a try!

yeah, can display the site in Thai, but the poor coding won't open threads in safari...

    have a look at :

    http://www.weddingsquare.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=38

try and open a thread... Firefox will open them but will display garbage on the page (no (windows, dos) option and no use on the others) - but its tabs display the text fine. Safari is fine for the index but just opens a blank page (it looks like the request terminates early as there is nothing in the page source) Please help if I have missed something!

a thai language alternative to thai visa might be the answer, any suggestions? :o

  17. P.S. tonight I got engaged to the most beautiful lady in the world but I doubt many people read this far so it's our little secret

    :o

    congratulations :D

I live the other side of sukhumvit and really like it here. But I am married with an 8 month old child. Having a 2 bed house has made things a lot easier - esp when friends and family come to stay! The pool etc is a bonus too. After living in apartments in Rayong I can see how they are appealing, but we like that we can get away from the city and its nice and quiet here. Its also very easy to get to the far end of Jomtien beach / cable ski for water sports :D

  18. I am using safari 3 and firefox 2. I seem to have a problem that a lot of thai language sites are unreadable in firefox. Google displays the language ok but when you visit the page itself it displays garbage (this is mostly using a microsoft thai font). The same page will be readable in safari, but not all the forum stuff works...

(this is annoying my wife! :o )
