  2. International drivers licenses are valid if you are here as a tourist for a total of 6 months. If you visa status is other than tourist, then you need a thai drivers license.

If that is true, how come my carinsuance company doesn't require nor mention it and why during my 2nd carregistration in 4 years nobody informed me about this as well

Couple of months ago I as stopped and they checked my DL and nothing was said as well

    J

Edit; I am too lazy to get my Thai DL

Have you had an accident and tried to make a claim on your insurance yet?

You are looking at an out of date law ... it has been changed and modified.

Yes, I have been hit 7 times in 4 years, and claimed with insurance on essentially the same IDP and never was a problem. Same goes for 100's of stops by police ... which, never win with me anyway..

  3. Can't you just show them something with your address on it?

I showed my work permit, which didn't even have my address, but my works one.

Yes, quite so and easy. I have no idea whether these guys are long-stayers here trying to stay on tourist visas or what, but all you need to buy (even finance, as I did with 3 vehicles so far) is your passport, Work Permit (as it shows company address) ... but if you have a Yellow Tabien Ban, it's quicker. Although, Thailand does not recognize it as a "permanent" document for your residence, oddly enough, so when you go to switch from the Red tabien to the White Tabien, they will ask for the Work Permit again.

I have no idea why anyone is going to an Embassy to get letters or bothering with Immigration. Senseless.

I even bought my house, financed by Land & House Bank for 8.3 million baht (20% down, altho usually they will ask a foreigner for 30% down per MOF guidelines) with just my Tabien Ban, Passport, and Work Permit. And, that is a big purchase compared to a small vehicle which can be written off easily by the bank.

  4. My girfriend can drive but she doesn't like too. I was stopped in Kanachanburi, is that right. I only have my uk licence, the guy looked at it, looked at me and told be to have a nice trip. I lost 2lbs in my pants but my girlfriend assured that they don't really care.

I was in Kanchanburi for a wedding and then went 4 wheeling in the forest., By accident I went thru someone's yard cuz my GPS said it was a public road, but it wasn't. My roof rack was yanked off by low-hanging tree branches and the entire truck scratched by rose thorns .... the "family" of 20 people came out, trying to help me untangle the roof rack but did not understand how it was installed so they scraped my hood with it until I twisted it out of the gasket lining.

Insurance company guy came to Kanchanaburi area, asked me to draw the pic of the aqccident ... first class paid for everything ... no problem.

However, foreign country driving license only .. woah, big problems. Get the IDP.

You can't be that dim. :o

Out of 200+ GPS misguidances .. I consider 1 mistake only pretty good track record.

At least I don't drive with only a foreign country license. Try that in Japan or Korea ... never mind the US .. you will be arrested on the spot. They guy was lucky he is in LOS (land of stupidities) where thai police are not very well educated.

I was stopped in Bali for no helmet on a motorcycle and they were hiding around the corner .. officers spoke fluent English and lectured me for 30 mins before I gave them the supposed "fine", which was still peanuts in comparison to what I thought it would be ...

It comes down to this ... I have consistently maneuvered around every Thai Immigration change, laws, regs, etc... and you don't see me on here complaining about border runs, cuz I stay LEGAL, when it's necessary.

  5. There is NO need to waste time at the thai driver license crap.

You must a very busy and important person to consider an hour at the licensing centre getting legal a "waste of time" :D

    totster :o

Nope. Not important. Just know the law better than most. If the Sunbelt guys ever read this ... they know me and how I can make problems go away for me with a phone call most of the time. I just got lucky to get to know lots of government folks and the ex-parliament.

Again, I don't have to get a Thai driver's license to be "legal". Try checking the regulations and laws again.

And, yeah, I waste too much time in traffic as it is due to impatient and drivers who follow no rules of the road ... god, I would love to see for once, a thai driver turn in on a soi and at the same time a thai driver go out ... if I and most Tokyo people can do it on smaller roads ... I think thais need to up their driving skills here.

One hour of my consulting time is worth more than any police problem, even if it was serious ... so, since I do not have to get a Thai driver's license under the current laws ... no way I will waste my time.

  6. My girfriend can drive but she doesn't like too. I was stopped in Kanachanburi, is that right. I only have my uk licence, the guy looked at it, looked at me and told be to have a nice trip. I lost 2lbs in my pants but my girlfriend assured that they don't really care.

However, foreign country driving license only .. woah, big problems. Get the IDP.

  7. whilst an international driving licence might placate the highway and traffic police , i have heard that in the event of an accident , insurance companies will not accept an international licence , (unless you are driving a rental car from one of the major companies , in which case their insurance will cover you) , and so your policy will be invalid , and you could find yourself with a huge bill to pay or worse.

the thai drivers licence is easy to obtain if you have a licence from your own country to show them , takes an hour or so and is pretty straightforward.

    Not true.

I have been driving here for 4 years on an IDP ... and, let's say for sake of realsim .. it's not truly up-to-date.

I have been stopped by HiWay police (and argued my way out of any such fake radar gun ticket which they were not using .. and there were more Thai drivers pulled behind me to get bribes from/, local police (whom do not even know their own traffic laws or outright lie, such as the "50 meter signal before turn rule" I was recently given and I told the officer to F-off) ... and more.

I have been hit in the rear of my cars or trucks 8 times in the last 3 years, each time the Thai driver was drunk or talking on their cell phone w/o a bluetooth, and have always been 100% guilty .. which I often get their signature to if no insurance agent can get to me (yes, I am a lawyer) ...

I have always had first class insurance, and everytime just a old worn-out copy of the IDP suffices, along with my passport. Sometimes I have used my Tabien Ban for identification, and still it works. If that was the case as stated in the quote, I could never buy vehicles (all are financed in MY name) and get a white tabien nor could I get insurance. Right now, my Chevy Z-71 4x4 still has it's red tabien and because they used my Tabien Ban as a residence (yes, even my house is financed in my name through Land & Houses Bank), I have to now submit a WP cuz for some crazy reason, they think the WP is more "secure" than a Tabien Ban ... who the hel_l decided that ??

Anyway, you can use the IDP for at least 1 year from the execution date and if you are even reasonably clever, you can make that ONE document last many years. There is NO need to waste time at the thai driver license crap. Unless, for example me ... if I wanted to go back to the States someday and drive a rental car (sold my last car in the States in 1999) then since my US driver's license expired 2 years ago ... I could use an IDP from Thailand to drive in the US.

Yes, it's true ... 90% of Thai traffic police have no idea they need to see your country driver license as valid AND the IDP. I have very little respect for the thai traffic police due to their overt corruption and making up of laws and rules, and argue even with captains and sometimes tell them I have no documents. Never had a problem in 5 years. Not that I recommend that to all, as I have friends from the ex-Thaksin Admin I did legal work for, and still am friends with military brass, as my ex-gf's brother was a Colonel in the Army and my now wife's dad is a Colonel.

Back to the point - all you need is an IDP.

  8. Not really. Not all foreigner controlled companies are illegal. I worked as a constitutional and international lawyer under the Thaksin Admin till the coup, and still all americans can own up to 99.999% of a company in Thailand under the Amity Treaty.

I have owned my companies for 7 years here and they are all owned majorally by myself, with minor stock %'s to Thais and other non-thais in Asia. I even still own my house in Bang Khen as a company under the Amity Treaty.

The law made by the King only applies to US citizens tho ...

I am buying a house in a large development. I was already in too far when all these rulings came out. my developer just sent me this email since he knew i was worried about it. I thought i might have to do a 30 year lease with the option to transfer anytime i wanted. does anyone know about this?

    Email from developer :

"We've had some news, that you may have already heard: It seems that the

rumour that finally foreigner-controlled companies will be able to own one

property with up to 1 Rai of land, has been put to paper. I'm waiting for a

proper translation, but our lawyers have already seen it and confirm it.

I know you were not too worried about this, as in Thailand there is always a

way, but it will make life easier anyway."

    thanks

    Jimmy

I may be wrong, but this seems so unlikely as to be laughable.

I think this guy is having you on.

First of all, foreign controlled companies are illegal, so if they were to change the law, it would be individuals, not companies that would be given the right to own land; in a similar way that they can now own condos, under certain conditions.

I just cannot believe that in the current political climate that any government official iwould be concerned about foreigners owning land - political suicide at present, IMHO.

But I may be wrong :o

  9. ... So, we were told the crap about "new rules .. no spouse visa w/o tax statements and payments, etc...", and sent away ...

... focus on this part ...

Yes, I did ... but, what can you do when you have police statements as to proof that an ex-gf demolished the office and left the country, and she was chief MD ... not me.

    Greg

Umm, besides that, one BKK Bank account shows more than 65,000 baht/month from my Japan operations + my 1,000,000 + baht .. 2 times/yr bonus, so why would it be necessary to even show tax statements in Thailand ??? Don't I qualify under supporting dependent spouse, when the mortgage payment is 45,000 baht/mo, but her income is 14,000 baht / month ???

    GA

  10. I was at a complete loss today at Immigration with my wife.... (we married 4 months ago, and I have 2.7 million in the thai banking system, and now refuse to keep any if this keeps up).

We were not aware of the new visa rules, and I know a couple of the captains on the 2nd and 3rd floors. I have run a business in Thailand for 4 years now, but an ex-gf who was my 51% partner up and disappeared to England and then who knows where owned it, but when she left last January, she stole almost every document I had. So, I declared to myself the company basically defunt, and got rid of all staff and just kept the WP/Visa until a few months after we were married. So, I decided I was not going to renew my Non-B Visa for my old company, since I knew I was marrying a new gf, and had enough money to qualify under the "support dependent spouse" visa area. The Capt. upstairs said today was first day back and new rules and wander around the 1st floor asking various clerks and most said I could not apply except register a new company and run a biz, but one woman said "dai dai" so we went and filled out the usual forms, but then she got pissy when we had not made copies of all my bank statements and our legal documents (basically cuz we were just there to find out the procedure then come back), and she asked for tax forms and receipts ... of course none of which I had cuz there was no one (my thai ex-gf) running the company, and I was basically freelancing. So, we were told the crap about "new rules .. no spouse visa w/o tax statements and payments, etc...", and sent away.

Why cuz my ex-gf who stole every document possible should I be held accountable for finding the receipts and documents which are probably thrown away at her mother's house months ago???

Why don't I qualify since once every 3 months or so, my bonus from Japan operations is about 1,000,000 baht??? to get a spouse type / family visa?? I was just about to lay out 2.5 million baht for a new house deposit (as I am the signatory on the new loan, which is the first foreinger loanee for this large Thai RE Company) and only I can pay the 44,000 baht mortgage, as my wife's salary is only 14,000 baht!!!!! Does Immigration ever think as a business, and not want an NPL on this bank's books???

Also, I have to put the money down Tuesday (tomorrow) and if I do, I will not have enough left over to form a company for some stupid month by month WPermit (this happened to me with the first company the 1st 2 years) so I can stay in Thailand to enjoy this nice house with my wife and her parents.

Am I wrong in assuming I should have been able to get some WP/Visa renewal as my Visa and WP from the old company (which I desperately want to resign) expire on 03 Dec 2006?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    News from the new regulation:

1.Retirement Visa extension. If you have a foreign married spouse who is a dependent they will be able to get this dependent visa. ( change of what has been happing the last couple weeks in Bangkok)

Example: You are 52 years old and you have a 34 year old wife who is from Germany, she can be a dependent. You only need 800,000 or a pension of 65,000 Baht per month as a couple.

2.Retirement visa extension: If you have children under 20. They will no longer be able to get a dependent visa based on you having an extension of stay on retirement. Immigration wants these kids to get it based on education so they go to school.

3.Investment Visa extension: Will no longer be available after Oct 1st for new applicants on 3 million Baht.

    4. Investment visa extension. For existing extension of stay holders of 3 million Baht, we are now being told this will now be grandfathered in and they will be able to get the extension forever as long as they renew.

5.Now the news for frequent visitors: We have checked this upwards and backwards all day and it has been confirmed by a copy of the new regulation we have. If you have a visa on arrival or a Tourist Visa Exemption more than three times in six months, you cannot come into Thailand without a visa from an Embassy/Consulate. When you enter Thailand, even if you are here just 1 hour, this counts as 30 days. If you come back 6 weeks later for 2 days, this again is 30 days. If you arrive a month later for 4 days, still counts as 30 days. When you leave, you cannot enter Thailand for 3.5 months without coming back with a visa. The reason given is to force people who are supposed to have work permits to do so and pay tax.

Another example; you arrive for a week, this counts as 30 days, One month later 3 days and its 30 days, two months later and its for a two week period, still another 30 days. You can reenter Thailand in 6 weeks without having a visa.

The clock starts at zero on Oct 1st 2006, meaning everyone has a quota of three entries in the next six months. No matter how many previous entries you may have.

6.On extension of stay based support of a Thai national (Marriage visa), before if you applied for this extension of stay, you would get a 30 day consideration stamp. Once you return to Immigration in 30 days you would get the one year extension.

Now however it will be the same as an extension of stay based on business, with the norm of three 30 day consideration stamps instead of one stamp( like before). Immigration will go out and check to see if it’s a real marriage or a sham before issuing the one year.

For existing marriage visa holders, if they still have not checked the marriage residence in the second year, the same multiple 30 day consideration stamps, may apply before they issue the extension of stay.

7.On an extension of stay based on being a Monk. No dependents will be allowed to get an extension of stay based on being a dependent.
