  1. My first class auto insurance is coming up for renewal and would like to know people's experience with Roojai.com and DirectAsia.com. DirectAsia gave me the lowest quote but 3rd party liability is half as much coverage as the other two and they seem a little sleezy. Anyone's experience with claims with them would be appreciated. Roojai.com seems like a better managed company and was hoping to see if anyone had claims experience with them. Do they have their own adjusters or use a subcontractor? They are only slightly less than Viriyah but total loss coverage is 30,000 baht more than Viriyah is offering me this year. In my experience Viriyah is very responsive to claims, etc. Just trying to get some info before decide who to go with for the next year's coverage. Thanks in advance for useful replies.

  2. Do you know what they call the beetle nut lime in Thai? I can probably find it at Dalat Khlong Toei but will need to be asking for it in Thai. Yes, the Masa is a little expensive but I really want to make my own tortillas and tamales so I decided to give it a go. I tried using corn meal and flour but they did not taste very good. I did not realize at that time that the corn is cooked with lye or lime and processed before being ground. I guess that is why authentic corn tortillas taste so darn good. When I lived in So Cal there was a mexican market that made fresh corn tortillas all day. They had three Mexican ladies with a big pile of masa in front of them forming them by hand and cooking them. I would go and buy a couple of dozen and eat them by myself lickety split.

Where did you buy the lime to make the masa dough? I would also like to find a source for corn husks in Thailand (Bangkok would be preferred). I have some masa harina for tortillas coming from iherb.com. Cost me $4.09 plus $4.00 DHL Global Priority shipping (bunch of other stuff ordered with it). Should come soon so I can make tortillas. I had a tortilla press made by a wood craftsman in Bangkok for 300 baht (haven't tested it out yet but it looks good). If you are new to iherb you can get $10 off your first order by using gift code DSF797. Average delivery time to Thailand is two weeks or less.

I've been on the quest for real masa flour for years and was excited when you posted about a source that I had never heard of at a reasonable shipping price, so I went to the site you mentioned and see that it is only 24 oz [680 grams] and at that rate, it gets quite expensive especially when you compare it to the price at amazon.com where you can get 2 kilos for $1.39, but the shipping at amazon kills you.

I made masa myself from imported masa seeds that I grew, harvested, dried then processed into neximalized corn [masa] and used the lime that you can buy from the vendors at the old style public markets where they sell local tobacco and beetle nut lime. worked great and tasted fantastic and authentic, but lots of work doing it on a small scale and that's why I want some masa flour that you just add water to and you get dough for tortillas.

I still have some of the seed that may still be viable if anyone wants some to grow it, you can have some for free.

A word of caution re: hydrated lime.......... I heard or read that you should avoid construction grade as it can have some heavy metals and other toxins. That's why I choose the beetle nut lime as it is simply crushed and ground shells and is pure calcium.

  4. It took about two weeks, as usual. I'm in Chiang Mai. Hope this helps.

I just received my second order today. It took slightly over two weeks. The interesting thing is this one did not get posted in Germany as the first package did. DHL imported the package directly into Thailand and it has a Thai postal permit sticker that says "Laksi Post Office, Direct Entry" on it. I guess if volume is high enough they fly a container directly to Thailand to save money. However it gets here, so far I am very pleased with iherb and have a third order already on the way. I am saving over 50% of what I would pay for the products here in Thailand.

  5. I just got another package and it went through LAX and then Frankfurt. BTW, after not being charged seven baht sevaral times in a row, the mail girl asked for it today. Whatever. It was a larger box than usual because of what I ordered, but the value was only 40 USD and the weight .8 kilos, so apparently the price is the key as to whether you get nicked.

How many days in transit was your latest order? What part of Thailand are you in? My second order is still in transit after 14 days from ordering date (was ordered on Friday so did not get processed by DHL until Monday or Tuesday so actual transit time probably 12 days or less). It did not come today and I am hoping to receive it on Monday.

  6. My first iherb order arrived today. It came 12 days after I placed the order. I have another order coming that was processed five days after this one. I expect to receive it by Saturday or next Monday. Everything came as ordered in good condition. So far I am very pleased with this company and I found it thanks to people here at Thai Visa forums. You cannot beat the $4 flat rate international shipping fee. It appears that the package was moved by DHL to Germany and mailed from Germany. No problems with Thai customs and only had to pay the 7 baht fee for packages over 1Kg in weight. I have a code you can use for $10 off a first order over $40 or $5 off a smaller first order. Gift Code: DSF797

  7. No responses. I received my first order today 12 days after I placed my order. The postage permit was from Germany. So they are having DHL air freight the packages to Germany and then are mailed to Thailand. Only had to pay the 7 baht customs fee for packages over 1kg in weight. They gave me a gift code (DSF797) to share with friends for $10 off first order over $40 or $5 off a smaller first order. Everything came in good order and I am very pleased.

  8. I am not clear, are you saying they DHL to another country which then mails them by regular post?

Whatever you do, do NOT have it come into Thailand by DHL or any other courier.

Yes, that is what they do. The packages are moved by DHL and then mailed in another country to Thailand. I want to know from people that have received these packages from which country they were mailed from. This can be discerned from the postage label or postal permit imprint. They are not mailed directly from the U.S.

  9. I always have them ship USPS no problems yet

iherb.com does not offer USPS shipping. Their airmail service is a Global lift service by DHL. The packages are not posted in the US but are airlifted to another country closer to Thailand for posting. They are delivered by Thai Post but I would like to know in which country DHL is posting the mail into the international airmail system. I am quite confident it is not USPS as their rates are ridiculously expensive and it would make no sense for iherb.com to be using a middle man to simply mail them from the same country.

  10. For those of you who have received packages from iherb.com using the Global Priority Mail by DHL option I have a question for you. In which country do the packages enter the mail stream when mailed to Thailand? I see that DHL Global Mail has hubs in Hong Kong and Singapore. If you remember in which country the postage label was from (if one was used) or in which country the postage permit was issued I would appreciate a reply here. It seems that if the packages enter the international airmail stream in another country, they have a much likelier chance of passing by customs rather than having to pass customs first and then entering the mail stream here in Thailand.

  11. What puzzles me is how anyone is able to order from iherb anyhow, they refused to accept orders from me due to the credit card address being Thai, and despite my calling them. Do you all have non Thai addresses on your cards?? They were vehement to me that they will not accept orders with a Thai billing address. (Wasn't the shipping address that was the issue at that point, but the billing address...)

It has been a while since you asked this but nobody addressed so your question so I will respond. I just placed my first order with iherb.com. I used my Thai Amex card with no issues whatsoever. The order went right through with my Thai billing and shipping address. They are still not shipping express but as long as your order is 1.814Kg or under you can still use the Global Priority by DHL service for a flat US$4.00. Regular USPS international first class would cost US$39.65 for the same weight of my order. The $4.00 flat rate shipping is a fantastic deal. I used coupon code DSF797 and got $10.00 off since this was my first order and it was over $40.00. Orders under $40.00 will still get $5.00 off for a new customer's first order. It has been less than three hours since I ordered and my order is already in picking status and will be shipped the same day (US time) that I ordered it. I will report back when it has been delivered on how long it took to get to me in BKK.

I've recieved three boxes from Iherb (including the one I mentioned three or four posts above this) since the one that got turned back. All have come straight to my house with no added charges. All orders were between 50 and 55 USD and all said "Natural products for personal use, Quantity 1" on them. Two of the packages arrived when we weren't home and the mail girl left the package on our mailbox and never even came back and asked for seven baht. Iherb shipping rates (and product prices) are so low that multiple small packages instead of one big one make sense. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update. I just placed my first order and hoping it gets to me with no issues. I got some items at less than 50% of what I have to pay for them here in Thailand.

  12. Pattaya is in the sub-disctrict of Banglamung. Most likely the package is at the Banglamung Post Office. Have your recipient go there with their ID and try to pick it up. You can have them try to call Thai Post at 1545 (special 4 digit phone number). The Banglamung Post Office is on Pattay Na Klua Road and quite easy to get to.

Also track it on the Thai Post website where you might get more information about the package.
