  1. According to a restaurant-owning friend here, it costs around 2% of the bill to take payment by QR code. Not only that, but cash payments have the capacity to be "hidden" meaning that the amounts involved are not included in their tax accounts. It is easy to see that by avoiding a QR/Scan transaction, the business benefits in both directions - no bank charge, and a likely tax saving. The banks save too inasmuch as they need fewer employees to handle QR transactions and receive a payment from the service provider. Restaurants prefer to take cash, and there is little chance of them increasing their prices to compensate for the cost - so it is a win-win for them, and their customers. Simples.
  2. And the difference between viagra and rigor mortis is...
  3. I agree wholeheartedly. At the same time, some of the unsavoury comments on here should result in a ban too.
  4. The "weapon" looks more like a radio to me, though it could be used as a weapon of course. He appears to have it in his left hand from the beginning of the video, as opposed to running to his vehicle to fetch it. While there's no legally valid excuse for the farang's attack on the two Thais, it is easy to surmise that he may have been upset by the Thai driver's action before the clip started, and that the farang was reacting to that in much the same way as we see some behave on Western roads when carved up by another driver. As for the comment that the farang was not identified, it would be interesting to know why he ended up at a police station a little later to perform his "wai," or was that merely a "sawadee krap" greeting to whoever he was talking with?
  5. I had made the mistake of joining a Wise-related Facebook group many months ago, expecting to see some tips on how to use the service even more efficienly - not that I had any complaints of my own. Instead, I saw lots of complaints about Wise accounts that had been shut down, money being withheld, and long delays in transfers. I worried about these as I use Wise at least once a month to t/f funds from the UK to Thailand. Then I noticed that most (if not all) of the names of the complainants originated outside Europe and the US. I doubt that any of those names were typical farangs... Almost all of those complaints that I read seemed to be made by people who were breaking Wise policies and suffering the consequences as a result. Of course, that could be entirely coincidental.
  6. Amendment included above is to show the option to dump or burn excess fuel.
  7. The Boeing 777-300ER has the following weight specifications: Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW): 775,000 lbs (351,534 kg) Maximum Landing Weight (MLW): 554,000 lbs (251,290 kg) Comparison: The MTOW is significantly higher than the MLW because an aircraft takes off with a full fuel load and payload but needs to be lighter for landing due to structural limitations. The difference between MTOW and MLW is 221,000 lbs (100,244 kg), which means that if a 777-300ER needs to return to the airport shortly after takeoff, it may have to dump or burn fuel to reduce weight before landing safely. It is therefore pretty obvious why the aiircraft had to dump fuel. To reduce from MTOW to MLW, a Boeing 777-300ER would need to dump 221,000 lbs of fuel, which would take approximately 39 minutes at the standard fuel dump rate. That figure is to reach MLW, and assumes that the aircraft's front landing assembly could withstand the weight involved. If there was any doubt about that fact, it would explain why flying a holding pattern for longer would be a safer option. When lives are at risk, it is neccessary to apply precautionary principles.
  8. Why do some call the two "victims" farang? Makes for a better comment if the facts are ignored perhaps?
