  1. You can write the SWIFT code in the BIC field, that's OK. Same-same but different.

I use my HSBC online account (Hong Kong branch) to send money to Kasikorn (BKK branch) and don't know why they put the BIC and IBAN fields because both are for transfer in Europe only and none of these 2 branches are in Europe :o They should ask for SWIFT only, otherwise a lot of people will not know what to do.

Usually I only write the name + account number because Kasikorn is listed in the drop down menu after selecting Thailand as the destination country and it always worked.

  2. They do issue multiple entry non-immigrant visa (O & B ), I asked them earlier this month as I was thinking to renew my O there before I changed my mind. However I'm a HK resident and therefore have a HK ID card and I'm sure it helps a lot. Don't know if they will issue to non residents, but you can call or email them, they don't bite and are friendly. The person to contact is Mrs. Wong at (+852) 2532-5118 or email them sthai01 (at) thai-consulate.org.hk

They told me to bring: financial evidences, letter from my HK company, copy of my HK ID card (+ the usual stuff: marriage certificate, wife ID card...).

  3. Linux is very verbose, so it should help looking through the log files.

Run sshd in verbose mode (-d), or more verbose (-d -d) or even more verbose (-d -d -d). See `man sshd`.

You could also monitor the connection (wireskark etc) but I don't think it is useful at that point, since you will probably find in the SSH log what's wrong.

If needed, try to remotely reboot your laptop. I use port knocking for that (see `knockd`).

  4. I just saw that the Thai consulate in SG will increase visa fee from may 1st 2008.

Does this apply only to SG or anyone heards about a general increase.

Transit visa: was SG$35, will be SG$40

    Tourist visa: same same (SG$50)

Non-imm single entry: was $85, will be SG$100

Non-imm multiple entry 1 year: was SG$220, will be SG$250

Non-imm multiple entry 3 years: same same (SG$500)

  5. Sorry for the misunderstood but 'huge' was for the maid, not for you or me !

I just asked my wife if her sister would be happy to get 10,000b instead of 5,000 and she replied that I was completely crazy because none would ever pay that price for a maid. I showed here some threads on TV so that she could see it's possible and now she told me she would quit her job (she works in the condo office for 7,000b) right away to become a farang maid !

So if anyone is looking for a maid (or 2 with her sister) around Ramkhamhaeng just contact me in private :o

  6. Now if i had some "transparency" stuff would be nice.......

You can have transparency, blur, woobly, fire, water, explosion, shadow... effects and tons of options, but you should install compizconfig-settings-manager if you want to be able to easily play with all of them.

    From terminal:

    sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Then you can run it from menu System / Preferences / Advanced Desktop Effects Settings

    Anyone interested in a second-hand Vista? :D

    What is Vista ? :o

  7. it gives a repeat of the four sides of the cube ie you see 4 or 8 or 12 or 16, but each set is a repeat of the first four.

Not for me, I'm using a cube, err.. a hexagon, with 6 sides, each of them being an independant workspace. Also, the workspace switcher applet in gnome panel really shows 6 different workspaces.

    I'm using compiz 0.6.3

  8. You can add (or remove) from 1 to 32 desktops to the cube (but less or over four, I wouldn't call that a cube anymore :o )

-With CompizConfig Setting Managers, click menu General / Desktop Size / Horizontal Virtual Size

    -With gconf-editor, select key: /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/hsize

  9. Is there a particular internet provider or service that is faster than the rest?

It will higly depend on your location.

For instance, I live in Ladprao and use True Telecom 2.5MB (1,230 baht/month). Never had problem and it's quite decent for Thailand (I won't compare it to my HK ADSL line though!).

Now I bought a condo in Ramkhamhaeng and want to rent it with ADSL. I had to use TOT as the condo company has agreements with them. I just opened a 1MB/512KB (590 baht) line 3 days ago and all I get is a horrible 32Kb/512Kb :D Also the line is disconnected every 2 minutes or so.

By the way, I would be glad to hear from anyone living in that area and using TOT to know how their ADSL line is working :o

  10. There are some users who cannot run Ubuntu 7.10 + Compiz without a crash (system freezes, only mouse is working). There's nothing to do for now, maybe your problem will be solved with Ubuntu 8.04 next month as it will include the latest xorg. For now, just disable any visual effects and that should/will be OK.

Also, using Automatix is absolutely not recommanded for now, as it can mess a lot with any Ubuntu updates. It seems using it with 8.04 will be OK, but that has to be verified.

  11. I gave up CD/DVD too. In Thailand after 2 years all backup get lost.

I keep all data on 2 separate HD, and nothing is lost. HD prices are cheap so it's for me the best and safest way.

Regarding Flash storage, although it's not supposed to last for long time I still have a 256MB Kodak PC card bought in 1998 with over 1,000 pictures I took at that time. Not a single pictures has been lost/damaged. But I wouldn't use it for important backup though!

  12. No problem with Kasikorn: I opened an account there (Ladprao, just in front of Carrefour) only for the purpose to have my Paypal account verified. They didn't even care of my O visa.

-open an account and ask for internet access. You have to give them an email

-wait 24h you will receive by email your login+pass

-connect to internet and activate your web card

-wait 24h before receiving an email telling you the card is available

-connect again to Kasikorn web site and get the 16 digits number + CVV + expiry date

-go to your Paypal account and just add the card

-wait 2 or 3 days then you'll receive another email from Kasikorn giving you the Paypal 4 digits magic number. It will be displayed as "Merchant Name: xxxxPAYPAL--*EXPUSE" where xxxx is that number.

-go back to paypal, give that number and that's it :o

  13. I set up Ubuntu on a friend's old 800Mhx with 256Mb of RAM and more or less 16MB video card. It works like a charm for internet, email... Distros like Debian and many others should work as well.

For oldest computers, Xubuntu or stuff like that will be perfect.
