  1. I'm in the US. I wired some money to my Bangkok Bank account so I could transfer it to a friend in BKK. I did this about a year ago. During the process it sent an OTP to my Thai (DTAC) number. I put my DTAC SIM back in my iPhone in order to get the OTP. Now unfortunately I've lost my DTAC SIM. Any idea how I can transfer money from my BKK account to my friend's SCB acct from the US without a Thai SIM card? (Sticky problem.) I guess I'll wait for Thai business hours and request a replacement SIM from DTAC.

  2. Kind of a silly question I guess...but I've done this twice recently, after always using distilled drinking water previously. Well, I haven't died (obviously), but I'm kinda wondering if the bit of indigestion I've been feeling lately could be from this, or something else. Seems like it would be OK to use tap water (which I normally don't drink, but have always used for brushing teeth, with no apparent issues), because, 1) the water gets boiled, which would kill bacteria, and 2) not much water stays on the egg after I pull it out of the pot anyway (I use a spoon with holes in it).
But I know little about the tap water here, nor have I ever been very adept at science and biology, etc. Anyone able to cite some data about this? Thx

BTW, I live in BKK and was going to post this in the BKK forum...but this new 'asean now' site appears to have changed the BKK subforum. The categories there now (see below), don't seem to be appropriate for this sort of post, whereas before I could discuss pretty much anything Bangkok related there:
    Bangkok News
    Bangkok Events & Offers
    Sanitized Businesses in Bangkok

  3. Selling a vehicle and was told I'd need one of these again. Appointments at US embassy not available until August. I was told that one can now (for an extra 1000 baht?), get one of these in 1 day at the Thai govt office near Bangkok. (Seems I heard before these took about 3 weeks to get.) That person said this is now done at the same place they do 90-day reports (Muang Thong Thani, near Impact Arena).

Has anyone done this recently and can tell me if it's correct and any things to look out for? One page I found said to bring the below (i.e., the usual stuff). "Receipt of Address Notification" I assume means for my latest 90-day report receipt (which I have, always doing by mail recently, as online is hit and miss). I assume they have a copy service there? And a place that can take a photo? Thx

    • your passport
    • copy of your passport’s photo page
    • copy of your visa (if applicable)
    • copy of your TM6 Departure Card
    • copy of your Receipt of Address Notification
    • copy of your lease/house book with your name and address
    • two passport-size photos

  4. I bought one at Muji in Central Chitlom a few years ago (first one pictured below), which I unfortunately gave away (and can no longer get ahold of them). Now I need one again, but went to Muji in Central World (Central Chitlom one closed for renovation), and they didn't have (appears they may no longer sell). It was perfect for traveling with an oversized item I have. Anyone see one available around town?

Yes, there is one on Lazada, but delivery could take up to 2 weeks and I need one ASAP. I think there are also cheap ones made of metal tubing around, but they are flimsy and don't fold flat.

Alternatively, the second one below might do. Found the pic at Lazada. It says from Stanley. I sent Stanley a message on their FB page...perhaps they'll get back to me during business hours?

    Thx

  5. I'm leaving the country and have been selling lots of stuff, via FB Marketplace. I have two remaining things; a washer/dryer (combo) and a 6000 watt wall-mount water heater for shower. Bought both at Home Pro about 6 years ago. I'm finding it hard to find similar used items online to know what they might be worth. Actually, I need both right up to the time I leave. Does anyone know of a business/person who could come, remove and buy items like this? I've asked the landlord of my building if he'd be interested in buying either. He may be interested in the water heater, but not the washer/dryer. Thx

I think there's a risk in the form that the sender might not be the legitimate owner of the account the money is sent from (by gaining unauthorized access to that account).

If the account owner, upon discovering this, files a police report, it's not inconceivable that the bank(s) could be ordered to revert the transaction, if the sender can prove that they've been defrauded and you cannot prove that you were actually dealing with the rightful account owner.

    Yikes

You can do the immediate withdraw of the cash using ATM card as soon as the money show up in your banking app. Nothing more certain than cash in hand.

A friend recommended that. But, I currently have a few 100k baht in that acct. Say someone pays me 100k baht. I'm not going to withdraw 300k baht just to see if his pmnt went through. Also, I think limit for ATM withdrawals is considerably lower than 100k per withdrawal.... ? So, not practical.

Another friend also said, 'nothing more certain than cash.' So I recently sold something for a few 100k baht. We went together to guy's bank and got cash. Then I went to my bank next and deposited it. So this way certainly possible, but not very convenient.

  8. Maybe a silly question but...
Say you sell something online and the person wants to pay by bank transfer (using an app from BKK Bank, SCB, etc.). Is this always safe? Even if the amount is large (equivalent to several thousand US dollars)? One friend says yes: Once the amount shows up in my acct (when I log in using the app), there's no way the person could somehow reverse the transaction.
The only reason I'm asking is...it seems like I heard a case of someone making payment into a seller's bank acct, then through some trick, the money was not there later. But I kind of think this happened in the US; they actually went to the bank together, deposited a check with a clerk...but then somehow later the check was negated somehow (can't recall the details). Anyhow, I suppose I'm being extra paranoid, but as we all know, if there are ways to take advantage of people, other people will find a way....
Would you ever hesitate to be paid a large amount via bank transfer app?

    Don't you understand?

Any mild criticism of how things are done in Thailand is "Thai bashing" and, morally, the same as kneeling on George Floyd's neck.

    Please stop.

    1) If you're going to make that kind of a 'joke' in Thailand, yes: you need to add an emoticon so people know you're not being serious. 2) Your 'joke' was worse than useless in this thread.

  10. Safari on my Mac wouldn't show the Register button at thailandintervac.com. Firefox or Chrome did. Like some others, I was then able to register (today around 2:45pm). I'm 65, no health issues. The system took me to the appointment page to choose a date from the calendar. (Would have been a nice touch to say "dates in red already full; blue available" or something like that. TIT). Anyhow, despite scrolling all the way to December, no dates yield anything when clicked.
Disappointing, since some in this thread appear to have successfully made appointments. For me, the site was working until the *calendar* section. So maybe trying another time when it's not overwhelmed will work?

  11. I mailed my last 90-day report to the office in BKK on April 8 but have not yet heard back from them. I'm wondering if anyone knows if the office is backed up at the moment, or if there could be other reasons why it's late. Otherwise, it looks like I may need to make the tedious trip to the 90-day office to see if there's a problem.

I've been mailing in my reports for the last several years with no problems (unlike online reporting, which was always hit and miss).

I mailed in my last one on April 8 by registered mail, as usual. As you know, it's supposed to arrive "at least 15 days before" the expiry date. My expiry date was April 28. I mailed it on a Thursday, so it certainly would have reached Immigration by Monday the 12th, which would still be more than 15 days before the deadline. It's now May 12 and I have yet to hear back from Immigration. I think usually it would have come back by now.

[I went to the thailandpost website today to try and confirm that it actually reached the destination, but unfortunately their tracker feature is not working. But I doubt there was a problem with delivery.]

I searched for news about the 90-day reporting process and found an article from three weeks ago at thethaiger dot com saying that, as the online system is down (surprise), foreigners are advised to submit their reports by mail.

BTW, another article from four weeks ago says the Thai government is contemplating eliminating the 90-day reporting requirement.

    Thanks for any helpful info.

  13. On leave from the military, three soldiers were traveling through the countryside when their car broke down. Luckily, they spotted a farmhouse nearby.
The farmer let them in and they noticed his three beautiful daughters. One had enormous breasts, one had just average sized ones, and one had no breasts at all, only nipples.
"May we have sex with your daughters?," one of the soldiers asked.

    "No," said the farmer.

  14. As I said in my original post, I got the $600 stimulus check in Feb. of this year. I hadn't received the first, $1200 check. But I finally got it, at the end of March this year--almost a year after I received the letter saying I would get it. i deposited it right away using the Schwab iPhone app.

I haven't yet received the more recent $1400 check. A friend said he received his already however. So, hoping I'll see it fairly soon. FYI
