Pheu Thai dumps Move Forward to form a new coalition
By Peter Roche
The Pheu Thai Party formally announced this afternoon that it will nominate property tycoon Srettha Thavisin as its PM candidate when the next joint sitting of parliament takes place this Friday.
Pheu Thai will form a coalition without Move Forward Party after MFP refused to withdraw their election pledge to amend the fractious lese majeste laws, aka. Article 112 of the Thai Criminal Code.
It is likely that both BhumJai Thai and the Palang Pracharat parties – both formerpolitical foes of Pheu Thai – will join the new coalition. Move Forward Party will move to the opposition benches with it’s 116 MPs.

MFP 116 MP's? Thought it was 151 MP's

Yes, but they won't be in a coalition with MFP, if they vote with the opposition, and I can't see their partners in government putting anything forward to make that happen.
PT at best will keep the Junta in line till next year with small changes to non controversial bills then go for a vote of no confidence after May next year when the Senators power goes, but I would expect the Junta to see that coming as once the Senators go they will be well aware they will have lost without them.
Interesting times ahead.

Don't be fooled. See my previous posts. This might actually be some magnificiant political maneuver to oust the military once and for all. Absolutelty intriguing politics this is on a grand scale. A movie should or will be made about this. Very, very fascinating and I say this as a person educated in polical science.
I can see the possibilities' of this but PT will only be given enough rope to keep them happy, and bills going through the Parliament the Conservertive/ Miltary parties are against will not be put forward as they have a majority in this unholy coalition.
I do think whatever happens that PT will be decimated at the next G.E. if they go anywhere near helping the Cons/Military consolidate any sort of way to keep the Senators in their current position after May next year.
Hope there is a statement from MFP and Pita soon, that could be interesting.

The return of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is becoming enmeshed with the current power struggle at a political level going on between conservative and progressive forces after the General Election threw up a result which has put the Pheu Thai Party in the centre of the political spectrum with the capability of swinging political power in Thailand from one group to another. The fate of Mr Thaksin, who is the de facto leader of the party, has thus become linked to the political fate of the country and is at the confluence of a plot hatched by the conservatives to break up the eight-party coalition pact signed by the Move Forward Party, the Pheu Thai Party and six other smaller parties for a ‘Government of Hope’ on the 22nd May 2023, nine years to the day after the 2014 coup d’état. On Friday, the planned return of Mr Thaksin on August 10th to Thailand, announced by his daughter on July 26th, was thrown into doubt when Mr Chuwit Kamolvisit, the political activist who has a knack for detecting what is happening behind the scenes, revealed that Mr Thaksin has gotten cold feet fearing that he may be the victim of deception.
This is to me, is what the powers that be are wanting to do, break up the coalition at all costs, because they have now realised all that they put in place to stay in power is in jeopardy with no Senators from next year.
OK, they could stage another coup but that will be at the risk of killing the economy that they have been feeding off for the past however many years.
Interesting times are ahead.

You're not that far from me, I'm the other side of Phisanulok, between Wattayum and Sak Lek.
Was over there twice this month for Thai boxing, at Bang Rakam.

What happens when the 250 – 249 remaining – appointed senators' period is up next year; will there be another 250 new senators and how will they be appointed or elected, and are they also going to vote for a primeminister as it's stated in the constitution..?

The only problem he has is, the Junta are never going to allow the changes needed without a fight/skulduggery as shown up to press. It should all be done done through the ballot box not on the streets, but are the majority of Thai's going to back that or do they need another generation to come into the political arena.

The very reason that the Junta will have to be in power this time so they can reinstate the Senators so their hold on politics continues. Surely the coalition of MFP and Co know this.

"... the controllers of the Senate are thinking perhaps the game is up and they might need to concede some authority back to the people elected to the Parliament, ..."
Why do you say that? Please share.
Just my opinion, going from some of the news stories on here and from social media. If Senators are looking at bringing defamation action on anonymous posts that they don't like, especially where their family and friends are being targeted. Also some commercial bodies and trade organizations are starting to worry about any trouble which could reduce the economy, both domestic and from tourism.

I'm beginning to wonder if the powers that be I.E. the controllers of the Senate are thinking perhaps the game is up and they might need to concede some authority back to the people elected to the Parliament, or face some not so much violent disorder but public backlash against the Senate members, as seen on social media.

Constitutional Court Postpones Considering Pita’s Renomination Case
in Thailand News
Posted
I believe it was several leading legal academics and the Ombudsman who put it to "The Constitutional Court" that it was unconstitutional, surely said court could have made a ruling, or maybe the powers that be didn't have a clue where to go with it, fun and games as usual, please carry on, there's nothing to see here.
