  1. I live in Sweden, but have a wife from Ban Muang Pai, near Krasang.

    Hej!!

Where in Sweden are you? I used to live in Jonkopping, back in '98.

Not too sure if you going to find anything on the Internet in regards to ads for places in that area.

I am moving to Lumduan in February, it is about a 15 minute motorbike ride from Krasang. The fiance has quite a bit of land and we intend on building on it. In the meantime, we will be staying with the family.

I was there in November and loved it!! That is when I decided I would resign from my job here in the Philippines and ENJOY the rest of my life!!

    Keep in touch!!

  2. I will be in touch with the Thai Embassy here in the Philippines tomorrow, I'll see what I can find out and report back.

Thanks Sqdnguns, but I phoned them today and the nice lady was quite firm that they're only doing a 3 month visa. I'll be interested to see if you get a different story!

    Rob

    oooo - ps ...

you might let them know that Penang initially issued me with a 12 month visa. This expired in November 2006 - after the visa laws shake-up - and I was subsequently given only 3 months. I have all the paperwork and a current work permit (that expires concurrent with my visa.)

    R

Thanks Rob..........We'll see what we can find out. I may have my fiance give a call too to see what she hears from them.

  3. Seems many of TV members have live-in Issan GFs - judging by the large number of posts mentioning 'falang'.

Whilst this might be how Issan girls say the word in Issan/Lao, it's not a correct transliteration of the Thai word ฝรั่ง. It's pronounced 'farang' because that's a ror reua in the middle (basically a letter R). (If it were 'falang' then it would be spelt ฝลั่ง

This is not a post about Thai language. It's just a rant about people using the wrong English spelling because they can't read Thai !:o

    Rant over....

    Simon

LOL.......funny you bring this up. My fiance, from Lumduan, and I had a discussion about this last night. I asked her what the correct was the correct way to say it and she said "farang". I asked why do so many say "falang" and her reply was that not to many Thai's can pronounce the "r" properly so it sounds like "falang".

BTW, her native tongue is Cambodian, that's all they speak in the village.

  4. Sounds like you're getting off pretty easy................my fiance wants me to come up with $25,000 USD for the wedding, gold, party, outfits, etc........and I am dirt poor!! LOL We're in love though.

Moving to her village next month, Lumduan, and well see what we can work out.

    Good Luck to you!!

  5. They do the same thing in Turkey for a "safe journey."

I remember leaving Istanbul for the first time and was wondering why my former mother-in-law had brought out a pitcher of water with her to the car. As we pulled away, she threw the water behind the car. Asked my ex what that was about and she said for us to have a "safe journey."

  6. Does anyone know spefically what the dates are for the rocket festival in UdonThani this year? I am planning on a visit there for about 10 days and would like to make sure Im there during the festival... thanks

  7. Congratulations on retiring. I just saw your recent trip photos you posted and they are great. good slice of village life. I hope to join you up country in the next 12 months or so. I was posted to the Philippines from 04-06 and couldn't wait to get out to there. Good luck in Isaan.

    Hi redwooddrive,

Look forward to poossibly meeting up with you knocking down a few brew's with you!!

I came here to the Philippines back in March with the intentions of retiring............along the way, an old high school buddy convinced me to help him out and get a new calibration lab up and running for him down in Laguna and one thing led to another. Needless to say, it was not what I wanted, should have told him no but it's tough to say no to a friend of over 24+ years when he needs a hand.

I had already got some land down in General Santos City in Mindanao but ended up giving it up. Oh well.......my loss.

Things have a way of working out for the best though. I honestly believe the path I have chosen now is for the better..............tired of all the BS that goes on in the Philippines, so much potential here but the Filipino is too d@mn lazy to do anything about it, "Status Quo" is good enough for them.........what a shame.

I look forward to my new adventure, I know it won't be easy but I am up for it. I love my fiance and her family.............it will all work out.

  8. I'm watching the game live right now on my computer.

Just go to www.viidoo.com and download their free internet TV player. Gives you 30 free cable TV channels, and if you have a fast connection, the clarity is quite good.

Same Same here...............been using TVUPlayer to watch all of the NCAA and NFL games this season.

    Highly recommend this app!

  9. It works for us because I love each and every member of my wife's family as my own back in Orange County CA.

Fully retired (and some say retarded) in Chiayaphum Thailand

Hey Ken, where in the OC? I am from Huntington Beach and most of the family now lives in Anaheim Hills.

    BTW, Semi-Retired/Semi-Retarded................that's what I use............... :o

  10. Well, where is one to begin.................

First off, I ended 2006 by tendering my resignation to my employer here in the Philippines, on New Years Eve. Figured it would be best to get off on the right foot to begin a new year :o

I wasn't really happy with the job or the pay for that matter, oh well, life goes on.

On February 3rd, I will be departing for Thailand. Plans are a bit sketchy at the moment but may become more clearer in the next few months. I will take care of my visa at the Thai Embassy here in the Philippines BEFORE heading to LOS, still waiting on a call back from them.

My fiance and I will reside in Lumduan with her family. I spent some time there in November and fell in love with the area and her family. If we do not head to the states to live, we will make Lumduan home, like I said, things are still a bit sketchy, I don't really want to move back to the states. My fiance has quite a bit of land, a few nice lots to build a home and some for growing whatever.

What I would like to do I explore the possibility of opening up a dry goods store/Internet cafe with my fiance and even the two of us giving English lessons, my fiance speaks pretty d@mn good English. The Internet cafe depends on the connectivity issues in the area though, I have to look into it more when I get there. I was a systems engineer/PC Geek in a previous life so setting it up would be a piece of cake, use all Open Source Software and none of that M$ junk :D

I would be content with just working the land with her father and tending the cattle but we will need to make some money. We will be living off of my meager retirement/disability pay from the Marine Corps, not much but a hellluva lot more than the average Thai makes.

We will just take it day by day and see what happens, worse case scenario is we go back to the states and I enter the "rat race" all over again.......................... :D

Here's to living on the edge and loving it!!

  11. I just got back from Surin. I live in Pattaya, but will be building in Surin. I can give you info on Satellite TV depending on what country you are from, and what you would like to watch.

PM me and i'll give you the info.

    Barry

    Barry:

Going to be living in Lamduan starting in February, not too far from Surin. I would like to get US TV stations and sports; what options will I have?

    Thanks!!

  12. Philippines no problem at all................My girlfriend has been staying with me since June on the tourist visa she got upon arrival. Just have to renew it so often.

You may want to take the family to Cebu or Boracay..................nice locations for vacation. I live in Manila (Ayala Alabang) and it is not much for sight to seeing......dirty, polluted and no beaches.
