  1. I'm about to finish my one-year language Ed visa and plan to extend it for another year. How long should I wait before returning to Thailand to apply for another year? I've heard conflicting information - some say I should wait one month before returning, while others suggest doing a border run and reapplying upon reentry.

Additionally, I'm wondering if it's possible to extend my Ed visa for another year without leaving Thailand. Could you please clarify these options?

    Thank you for your response!

Careful spouting off on stuff you might or might not know anything about @DrJoy,

Simply exiting on an ED visa extension DOES NOT officially cancel the extension (no matter what you posted saying otherwise).

In order for people on an ED visa extension to bounce out and back like @driveout wants to they need to get documentation from their school saying they stop studying on xxx date (usually the day the extension expires), go to the immigration office that issued the extension about a week before that date, CANCEL the extension, immigrations will give them a stamp that lets them stay until the date on the paperwork from the school.. That's how you "officially" cancel an ED visa extension

THEN they can leave any time up to or on that date...

There are more than a few land borders that won't even let people on ED visa extension stamp OUT of the country without having cancelled it officially at the immigration office beforehand. And there are more than a couple borders that won't let people back in to thailand who bounce out, instead they tell them to slog to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap and fly back.

What it sounds like the O/P wants to do is just bounce out and back to get NOT a tourist visa (seeing as you can't get tourist visas at the border  but on a new free 30 day entry stamp.. <- called a visa exempt entry..

They say they're in pattaya SO they should FIRST cancel the extension they're on, and THEN look for a SERVICE that runs people to the border. The services that do that already have the wheels greased at the border they take their clients to so people can stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of Cambodia and then stamp right back in to thailand after that.. Trying to do it by themselves to "save a few baht" is gonna be like watching a slow motion train wreck

lets say i cancel my ed visa so my last day to stay is util 1 mars and fly to cambodia and come back to thailand on land thru boarder by my self without any agency, will that be an issue?

Consider it a fee for being allowed to re-enter without getting hassled. Legitimate? Well...

What's your plan after re-entering? If you want to continue to stay in Thailand, possibly on another education visa, it's probably best to just pay that extra fee.

yeah my plan is to get one more ed-visa for 1 year. The thing is that some say this fee is not needed

  4. I am planning to conduct a border run as my ED-visa is ended. Upon visiting a visa agency for assistance, I was informed that I would need to pay 3000 baht for the border run itself and an additional 3000 baht to clear my passport from the ED-visa status, totaling 6000 baht. I am unsure if this additional fee to clear my passport is legitimate, especially considering I have already canceled my ED-visa.

Alternatively, I am considering flying out of Thailand to Cambodia and returning via a border crossing. Given that my proficiency in the Thai language is limited, I am concerned about potential language assessments at the airport. Therefore, I am contemplating re-entering Thailand through the Khlong Yai border crossing. Could you please advise if this plan is advisable?

I have never undertaken a border run in Thailand before and would appreciate any guidance or insights you can provide. Thank you."

There is no "test at the borders (air or land) to get back into the country ESPECIALLY seeing as what you're doing is getting OFF an existing ED visa extension and comin' in as a 'tourist' on a free 30 day entry stamp..

They are testing your skills to see if you really did study thai for example, since there is a lot of students just do it for it he visa

I guess  that's how a diplomat would describe things,      One in particular is downright hostile, whilst others,  Chong Chom / O'smach  for example, are actually quite friendly,  300 baht to come straight back , think of it as a tip

Sounds like a good option, is there any good close to pattaya? I heard a story that someone paying 10000 baht to clear there passport, what the meaning of that and is that a thing?

The extension needs to be formally canceled by the immigration office that issued it. You'll need a letter from your school stating on which date your studies will end. Then you'll need to take that letter to the immigration office and they'll cancel your extension effective that date. You should obviously go there a few days before, to give you time to exit the country without overstaying.

Which land border do you intend to use? Some are friendlier than others, and if you want to return on the same day, you also need to bribe Cambodian immigration to let you exit without an overnight stay.

Depending on where you are located, using a border run service might be your best option to avoid any hassle at the border.

Thanks for your response. I am not sure, which one should I take? I am in Pattaya now, so the closest best I guess.

That sounds like you're currently on an extension based on attending school. In that case, you would need to cancel that extension first, otherwise immigration at a land border won't even allow you to exit.

Is your plan to re-enter Thailand visa exempt?

Won’t it cancel when I exit Thailand? How do I cancel it? Yes that’s my plan to re-enter and get tourist visa.

    thanks for your response

  9. When conducting a border run from Thailand to Cambodia and back on an Ed visa before its expiration, is there a possibility of being asked for additional funds upon re-entry into Thailand to “clear the passport” ?

I'm aware that airports usually conduct language proficiency tests, but I've heard that border crossings might not. Are there specific precautions I should take? My total stay in Thailand with the Ed visa before it expires will be 9 months.

    Thanks for any advice!

I understand the question. Since Pattaya may be applying its own rules (certainly for that particular school) it is impossible to answer. You should be able to stay until at least the one year anniversary of your entry into Thailand. That is the official rule.

Yes that’s what I was thinking to. I got a answer from the school and they can’t do a third extension for that last 1 month that is left on my 1 year Ed visa🤷‍♂️

When a Ministerial Police Order is issued, it is the law everywhere. It would not be unknown for individual immigration offices to ignore some of the conditions in an order, but it should be assumed that offices will follow the law until proven otherwise.

Also, under unusual circumstances, the Ministry might instruct offices to waive certain requirements for a time. During Covid, some conditions for student extensions were relaxed (not officially announced) but have been back in full force since the start of this year.

Thanks! My school told me its new rules for Pattaya. So now with the new rules i can only stay here for 10 months. Is it possible to extend it if you have 1 month left on your ed visa after the second extension of 9 month? I mean after the second extension it will be 9 month and 1 month will be left since the arrival stamp was 10 months ago. I hope it's not confusing, it's a bit hard for me to explain.

I vaguely remember the announcement, but it was over a decade ago. It was already in force at the time of the last major overhaul of the requirements for extensions of temporary permission to stay (Police Order 327/2557) in 2014.

Thanks for you answering. This apply to all the city’s in Thailand? I mean when a immigration rules change will it come to action to all city’s or some part?

I can confirm that this is a longstanding rule for a Non Ed visa and extensions for studying at an informal school like a language school. Note that it does not apply to language courses run by universities, and you may be able to study there with relaxed immigration rules if a genuine student.

Do you know how long these rule have been in action?

Thanks for letting me know. My language school did not tell me anything about this when I was applying for there school and this was 4 months ago. They are telling me this now and they are saying it’s new rules immigration have applied.

This is correct, and it's not new. If you are converting a tourist visa etc.. to a non-ed while in the country, you can only extend your stay for the maximum of one year from your latest arrival stamp.

Thanks for your response. Do you know how long these rules have been in action?

  16. So there is some new rules that been applied according to my school but I just want to check if it’s correct.

So my school told me today that my Ed visa is only valid from the day my arrival stamp to Thailand and it begins from there. So if you have chosen 1 year Ed visa and got the ED stamp let’s say Jun 2023, but if your arrival stamp is from January 2023, then your ed visa will only last to 2024 January.

Can someone confirm if this is correct?

    Thanks!
