  1. Come visit Buriram.  It has changed a lot since I first visited in April 1989. I came out here to live permanently in January 1998. The population was listed as 35,000 people in the city.  Now it is well over 200,000. New roads, bridges, entertainment centers--a great Thai football team, an F3 racing track. Thai Grandprix is scheduled for February 2018. Some very nice hotels" Amari, Best Western, Alvarez, Princess Sita. Amari's  food is extremely delicious. Three western shopping malls-- Robinsons, Taweetkit and Big C. My son is the night manager at Amari. Had some friends stay there for a week this past month and they were very pleased. When we first arrived there were only 2 flights per week. Now soon to have 12 flights per day. To me Buriram is home. There's no place like home

  2. we tried gofundme to help construction costs for a sports center for indigent children.  we did not get a single donation from it but we did get help and the facility is in operation. used by 12 schools free of charge. my friends provided the money.  still helping thousands of children here in buriram.

Try fact checking before publishing, the latest available data for Buriram indicates a population of 1.579 Million (2014).

The capacity of Thunder Castle is 24,000.

seating capacity of Thundercastle (Buriram FC)  is 33,600.   Population figures are spot on. A lot more development projects are on the planning board or are already  on the way.

Actually there are. This is an extremely well managed reserve, at present there is small visitors centre next to the car park and toilets. A short walk away through well maintained ares (with all the trees labeled in Thai and English) there are several observation points to view the wetlands. The observation points have bird identification data (Thai/English) and vantage points with binoculars supplied by the park to get closer views. Rangers are on hand to assist at most points.

Well worth a visit. Looking forward to further sypathetic development along the current lines.

I was in a meeting with Governor Anusorn this past month and the project is even greater than you have reported.  For the past twelve years I have been the sponsor of the Ban Yoei Sakae School and the recently completed Juta-Antiya Sports Center that is located adjacent to the Huay Talat Reservoir and just across from  the Huay Jorakay Mak and there are plans in development on both sides of the highway 219 (15 km mile-marker)being developed  for adding water sports, picnicking, additional areas for boy scout and girl scout camping areas. The area is prime for development and will become a major recreation area for all who wish to utilize the  facilities. So glad to see it coming to pass.

rental cars--- three different ones at airport in buriram.  My daughter used to be manager of ThaiRentacar.  Good cars.  Have lived in Buriram for 19 years and taught tourism at university for 8 of those years.  From Buriram Airport go north abut 7 kilometers to a major intersection--that road goes straight to Maha Salakam.  with traffic lights.  Turn right and go about 20Kms and look for the turn to the left for Taklang Elephant Village.  Shows everyday at 10 a.m. sharp and at 2 p.m.  Show cost is 100 baht for you Thai GF 40 Baht.  Then book an elephant for a twenty to thirty minute ride. 100 baht per person.  Then head north to Kalasin and visit the dinosaur digs.  Then come back toward Buriram and head over to Phimai.  Temple is worth seeing.  In Buriram Buriram United FC is doing well but for the first time but  last year they came in number 3.  Before that champions, swept all the cups and had a great team.  I worked for the coaching staff teaching English to Brazilian players.  Been a fan for the entire time we have had a team.  Newin Chidchob, the owner of Buriram United and main partner in the Chang International Circuit is one of the sponsors of the orphanage we run here in Buriram..  The International Circuit is directly  behind the Burriram I-mobile stadium.  The stadium is on Buriram Prakhonchai Highway.  If you would like to visit tow more temples Khao Phanom Rung is 65 kms from Buriram City same road that stadium is on go to Prakhonchai and follow the signs from there.  About 18 kms from Prakhonchai city.  100 baht per temple visit for farangs and 40 baht for Thai's.  A ticket for both temples is 150 baht, they are about 7 kms distance from each other. Have a great time in Lower Isaan. We love it here.

But that's a long way from MS Kam.

    1) Buriram airport is in Satuk and I am unsure if they have hire cars there. You may get a taxi, possibly.
    2) if G/f family are 30k from Buriram, I don't know if they are living in MS Kam. I think that's a lot longer distance away than that.
    Best of luck.

  7. thanks for sharing this film on cobra gold.  We had a team come up and help us  to reconstruct a rural school and paint a long wall.  Thai soldiers from the local garrison were also involved as well as people from the neighboring village and a dozen foreigners from a church group in Chicago. Now we need them again.  The soldiers and marines were a real blessing to us in 2005.  Wish they would come back.  We are in the final stages of constructing a memorial sports facility to be shared by 2,136 kids from 12 schools in rural Buriram.  Could sure use some help.

  8. I found this recipe works wonders.  take a tray, put 10 teaspoons full of baking soda and add the same amount of confectioners sugar, blend thoroughly then add a few spoonfuls of water to make the ingredients moist.  Ants will be attracted to the confectioners sugar but when they consume it the baking soda will cause their stomachs to rupture.  I put a tray of this in my bathroom and within a week every blood ant in my house was dead.  The powdery substance turned brown from all the ant bodies.  This is no joke.  It really works.  Good luck with your ant problems. can use the same mixture on a saucer or styrofoam food tray.

  9. Without a doubt there are Thai's who are so nice to be around.  Our registered NGO organization Tolo-thailand Foundation has been constructing the Juta Memorial Sports Center at the Ban Yoei Sakae Elementary School here in Buriram. Twelve schools with many indigent children will be using the facilities free of charge  Funds came in from around the world.  While we are in the final stages of building the facilities to honor the beloved principal from the school who passed away seven years ago due to cancer, thirty Buriram  Rajabhat University Second Year students  came to the school  and painted all the children's playground equipment, and helped to prepare the ground for a beautiful patio for children to sit under the trees in front of the school classroom building.  The next week 10  superb Thai soldiers from the local Military Garrison arrived to construct the patio and stayed to work for an entire week. The kids absolutely loved having them around. So far we have had volunteers from 50 different nationalities who raised money and came out to work along side the Thai's on numerous projects we have undertaken here over the past 19 years, including many English, Canadians, Americans, Australians, Dutch, Belgians, French.   Buriram is a better place because of this.

  10. Buriram is scheduled to play against Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) at I-Mobile Stadium on November 22nd. The visiting team has a huge following. The game with the most spectators was Nakhon Ratchasima vs Buriram. I would suspect with Buriram continuing to remain unbeaten, and having tied only 8 times, there will be a very large turn out. Korat is a mere 120 kilometers away and the fans from there travel easily to Buriram. I work parttime for the team as a coach trainer for the Brazilian coaching staff and never miss a match. The cheerleader section on the westside is reserved for the GU12 cheerleaders and band. Try to get your tickets for the west side next to that section either on the left or right. The cheering can be deafening but it does make the fans excited and the matches well worth the effort.

  11. It looks like a rubber snake to me, harmless.thumbsup.gif

Found in wooded areas. Have only seen two in the wild. One on Khao Kradong Forest Park (Pattara Bhopit) on the side of the mountain and one other not far from my home.

It's called a beautiful corral, It is pinkish in color with small brown dots on it's skin. It is venomous and It has front fangs so I would not be about trying to pick it up. See the book Snakes of Thailand Many Varieties.( Ngoo Thai Lai Chanit)

  12. Help - I married someone I have nothing in common with, and now I'm amazed to discover there are many cultural differences.

I have recently built a second house primarily because I can't stand trash and clutter everywhere. I built my wife a new bedroom with a 4 meter long closet which is crammed full to the max. Last year I was cleaning out our storeroom, Under a sack of boxes I found the old sewing machine and table I had purchased for my wife which she only used for two outfits she made something nearly 18 years ago, The table literally fell apart from termite damage, the machine itself was totally rusted, the belts totally frayed. No way could this ever be of use again. I took it out. loaded it in the back of my pick up and promptly took it to a scrap dealer where I received 100 Baht. Yesterday she asked me where her sewing machine was. I told her I had trashed it. She was furious. I explained it was beyond repair. She is still steaming. The silence is golden and wonderful. I think I will throw something else of hers away. She currently has four closets full of clothes, mostly silk dresses which she will never be able to get in. She is now 20 kilos heavier than she was 10 years ago. meanwhile my room is completely organized, frshly scented, mopped and swept clean as a whistle. Everything in its place. My book cases are super organized, polish and totally presentable. Ahhh!!!

  13. All vehicles that are taxed and insured and above 50cc should be able to use any road. In addition, all vehicles should drive in the left hand lane unless overtaking slower moving vehicles....and then I woke up to the real Thailand???

Newin is a superhero to us here in Buriram. Buriram United Football Club and the Chang International Track are attracting a lot of visitors from around Thailand and the world have resulted in a lot of folks deciding to come and live and work in Buriram. We have been living here almost 18 years and the addition of the football team has meant a lot to us. Buriram United now deep down in our hearts. Sahm soon, sahm soon, three zero! Come see for yourself. We never miss a match, Tolo loves Buriram United!!!!

  14. I have been an educator for the past 47 years. I retired from formal teaching in 2006 but have continued to assist several schools to upgrade their English language curriculum and methodology for reaching students. I taught part-time for a private school for one term. When I arrived at the school they asked me to furnish them with lesson plans lesson plans and all the other types of materials. worksheets etc. I told them to relax since I had been a professional educator, a principal, an institute president and a director of English for an entire nation. They agreed to let me do it my way. The bag of tricks I utilized was based on successful teaching methodology and role play. The end of the three month term the students tested for the best high school in the province. 89 of the 94 grade six students succeeded in getting in. The students were confident in speaking English. No more :"tang - q t-shirt." The Thai approach to teaching English is most often programmed to fail. Unfortunately, even at the university level. Schools should focus on their ability to communicate in realistic situations.

  15. And wasn't it just 2 weeks ago that there was a thread in here about the Ministry going out to make sure the costs of school supplies were reasonable? I guess that never panned out.

Every year for the past ten years we have helped the students of a rural school in Buriram province by helping to pay for uniforms, shoes and school supplies for children whose families could not afford them. I chose this school because the principal was a good friend of mine and he was a true educator who truly loved the children in his school. He died of cancer in 2010 but I promised him before he died that I would continue to help the children there as a legacy to our friendship. We started the first year with uniforms for 47 kids, then shoes for 110 kids. Now we have included sports uniforms and sports shoes, sporting equipment and put pressure on the local school district to release funds to improve the school facilities as well. Over time the number of children at this school has dropped from 117 children to the current enrollment of 85. Families here are having fewer children. A group of my friends, both foreign and local have gotten behind me on this and because of this we have been able to do a whole lot more.

We completely rebuilt the 9 classrooms, added a nursing station, a teacher's lounge, a library and computer room. added ceiling fans, created a kitchen so the kids could be fed twice a day, replaced all the desks for all the students and for the teachers as well. We added new doors to the classrooms, windows with bars and shutters, whiteboards, painted each room stem to stern, tiled the floors and redid the bathrooms, installed a new electrical system, constructed a drainage system that now prevents the classrooms from being flooded in rainy season and are currently building a dining hall and preparing sports fields. The total cost of these efforts for materials alone will have exceeded three million baht by the time we finish the major portion of the project. We started this program in 2005 with several foreigners but as a result a growing number of locals have been involved too. Even a Cobra Gold team of soldiers and marines participated as part of their community help program. I am not a rich man and I have a family of my own to support.

Try buying a couple of sets of uniforms for some child between 4 and 14 years of age and watch the smile on his or her face. Find a local school near where you live and do something positive.
