  1. Not sure if this has all ready been posted ?

From Monday 16 May customers will be able to use the UK’s new Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Chiang Mai.

The new visa application centre, run by our commercial partners VFS, will make it quicker and easier for customers in Northern Thailand to apply for their UK visas.

Customers can pay extra for a number of premium services offered at the VAC including the 3-5 day Priority Visa service, Premium Lounge as well as additional services provided by VFS such as ‘’walk in’’ appointments.

Paul Bute, Chargé d’Affaires at the British Embassy said:
This new visa application centre will make it more convenient for our customers in Northern Thailand to apply for their UK visa.

VFS Global successfully manage UK visa application centres all over the world, and we expect that through having this dedicated facility we will welcome more visitors from Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand to the UK.

The new visa application centre is located at:
Siripanich Building, floor 6 B 191 Huaykaew Rd Suthep Muang Chiang Mai 50200
There will be no changes to the visa process for customers, who will continue to apply for their visa and book their visa appointment via https://www.gov.uk/apply-uk-visa. However there will be an extra charge to use this user-pay VAC which is £55 on top of the cost of the visa.

  2. This is the first time ive heard of an under consideration stamp being issued with a retirement extension application

There is always a first time biggrin.png

It was reported in the forum for this and at least one other office.

Be happy if yours/mine still does it on the spot.

I'm going to try and stay happy biggrin.png but being on the never ending up's and down's of a run away Thai immigration roller coaster of the un known , makes me smile less these days sad.png

  3. I was under the impression that with an extension of stay based on the retirement / 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank route , the extension application was normally approved at the same time of the application , which is why that type of visa extension is generally considered less hassle than an application for a visa extension based on marriage , where an under consideration stamp is considered normal practice. This is the first time ive heard of an under consideration stamp being issued with a retirement extension application .

  4. Hi

My dog had similar symptoms and her red cell blood count was considered low , on checking the dog out the vet found a small lump in the dogs neck area , which turned out to be lymphoma . So hopefully your vet checked for any lumps all over the dog , our vet did say that she gets a lot of dogs in with the same symptoms as your dog , which were due to a '' Tic '' biting them , causing an infection which is treated with medication . We had regular blood work reports done to watch what was going on with the treatment of our dog , so the next blood work you get done should show if the medication is working .

  5. From my understanding, the Retirement option is considerably less hassle. Once per year I get a letter from the bank confirming the 800k (which is left, untouched, in a Term Deposit account) and a photocopy of the first (inner) page of the bank book (which shows the account number and account holder's name). The Jomtien Immigration office is apparently happy with that and I've never been required to show any withdrawals or additional deposits.

Then, once every 90 days you have to do the "90 Day Report". No big deal (although for some people you'd think they have to give up a kidney every time by the way they whine and complain about it).

Also, as you mentioned you have a monthly pension, you wouldn't actually need to have the full 800k in the account (as you could use the pension/deposit combination method instead but that also requires having your pension "verified" by your embassy). Personally, I'd say if you can afford it, stick the 800k in the term account and forget about it (until the next time you renew your extension or renew the term deposit). That way you do not have to worry about the vagaries of exchange rates affecting the "pension" portion of your requirement, you don't have to have get the pension "verified" by the embassy every year and you have a tidy little nest egg tucked away for emergencies.

The other advantage of a Retirement Visa is in the event you suddenly find yourself not married anymore. No need to scramble and change visas suddenly. If you travel (outside of the country) make sure you get the multi Re-Entry permit of course.

(I like that when I recently arrived the nice Immigration guy stamped my passport good until my Extension expiry date, 5 1/2 months from now ! Strangely odd though, as I normally go through the Premium (Fast Track) Immigration lane and those IOs would only stamp me good for 30 days regardless of the Visa and multi Re-Entry stamps (or expiry dates). Not sure why they do it differently than the guys in the regular Immigration lanes.)

Thanks for the comment guy's wai.gif

My main concern is that as each immigration office may interpret things differently and when the immigration officer sees I have a Thai bank account with 800,00+ Baht deposited in it , and its not been accessed for over six months . Could the immigration officer ask where ive been getting the money to live on , if there's never been any movements in the 800,000+ Baht bank account .

I was thinking about trying this , get two bank confirmation letters , one from the account containing the 800,000+ Baht and a second bank letter from my other Thai bank containing around 400,000 Baht .

Take two sets of visa extension application paper work , one for a retirement application and the other application for a married to a Thai National , then first present the retirement application paper work along with the 800,000+ bank account information , if the retirement application is turned down because of the non movement of money in the 800,000+ Baht bank account , then submit the married to a Thai nation application paper work along with the 400,000 Baht account , which shows monthly movements of money .

Its a pain in the backside to assemble both types of visa extension paper work just in case , but it would give me a safety net of sorts.

The other scenario , only submit the paperwork for a retirement , but have the two bank account letters and hope if the immigration officer queries the non movement of money in the 800,000+ bank account , then show him the second 400,000 Baht bank account showing the monthly movement of money .

Or may be I'm worrying too much and overally complicating things rolleyes.gif

  6. For many years now Ive been obtaining my annual visa extension using the married to a Thai national and having 400,000 Baht in my Thai bank option . Two things have recently change in my personal circumstances that now may offer me an alternative to using the 400,000 Baht visa extension renewal option

    1. I have recently reached retirement age

    2. I have recently had a monetary windfall and for the first time ever I have well over 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank .

The 800,000+ Baht has been placed in a fixed interest Thai bank account , but with access to the money at any time and this money is not being touched and will be left to accrue the account interest over time

I have a second Thai bank account where my monthly pension payment is deposited and this account is used for every day living expenses, this bank account balance is normally around 400,000 Baht , this Thai bank account is the one I normally use for the past married to a Thai national visa extension requirements.

Ive read that if using the retirement route to re new a visa extension , the financial requirement is 800,000 Baht deposited in a Thai bank account , and if the extension application is successful its granted there and then at the time of the application , where as using the the married to a Thai national and having 400,000 Baht in a Thai bank option, it normally takes about a month to get the extension approved and involves far more paper work and form filling , photos etc.

    so my questions are

I can show immigration my new Thai bank account containing over 800,000 Baht and an accompanying letter from the bank confirming the account details, for a visa extension based on retirement . But the account shows no regular deposits or withdrawals , would that be acceptable to immigration.

I could all so show Immigration my second Thai bank account containing around 400,000 Baht ( or less ) and if required obtain a second letter from the bank confirming the account details , this bank account would show my monthly spending pattern .

I'm thinking that going down the 800,000 Baht retirement visa extension route would be a lot less hassle and time consuming .

Does the above look possible or is there some thing that makes it better to stay with my old 400,000 Bhat option and the hassle that comes with it .

    Any constructive comments please

  7. I'm staying with friends 100 Km outside of Korat and using my CAT 3G dongle ( my CAT ) the service seems to have gone down some time Friday and has been on / off / . To day its patchy . I rang the CAT help line and was told that the CAT system was having problems in all of Thailand but only certain numbers may be affected and no idea when a fix would be available

Any one else having CAT 3G problems in both the Korat area and in other provinces

  8. Bereaved families let down by UK consular service, MPs say

LONDON: -- The consular service provided by the UK Foreign Office sometimes falls short of what the public "can legitimately expect", a report by MPs says.

Bereavement services - offered when Britons die abroad - had fallen "well below expected standards" at times, the Foreign Affairs Committee report says.

It said the Foreign Office had suffered budget cuts and more UK-based staff should be put in foreign positions.

The Foreign Office welcomed the report and said it was improving its service.

Some of the issues that the committee has identified, including our response to tragic murders abroad, are areas that we are already working to improve ”

The Foreign Office will present a paper addressing the report to parliament in January, the spokesman said.

  9. The old letter is specifically adressed to "Office Staff of Immigration Police Nakon Ratchasima Province".

The new letter is (more generalized) adressed to "Head/Commander (?) of Immigration Police (Region?) 4".

Head/commander: in Thai it is: ผู้บังคับการ

Dictionaries literally say: person to command; direct; control; govern

"Region" is not written in Thai, just digit 4 appended.

All or most of Isan is region 4, so its a very generalized form and would adress the "head of immigration police region 4".

And this is NOT the first report in Thaivisa that I have read about such nitpicking.

For reference I typed both adresses in Thai:

    old: เจ้าหน้าที่สำนักงานตรวจคนเข้าเมืองจังหวัดนครราชสีมา

    new: ผู้บังคับการตรวจคนเข้าเมือง 4

My wife finally managed to talk to her friend and its now confirmed the majority of our seedlings have a fungle problem called ... Asparagus Anthracnose

We originally planted around 4,000 locally bought seeds , but it seems that due to the rain and poor land drainage we now have this problem .

The fungus area is shown below , it becomes brown and brittle .

    asp1_zps4d15407d.jpg

We are having to now start again by growing new seeds but this time in trays and bags so we can control the water content and feeding .

Its a learning process , but an interesting one .

Hi and thanks for the advice , the links are a bit old ( 2008 ) and the rest from my self on another Asparagus related question

I was hoping for some one who is actually growing Asparagus in Thailand , even possibily a new forum member , who I can ask a question about our current fungus / rot problem .

    TLwai.gif

  12. Ive had a quick look through the farming topics , my wife has started growing asparagus from seed and the plants are now starting to grow , but many of them seem to be infected by a fungus / rot . Ive done an internet search , but many results relate to non Thai articles and different growing conditions.

My wife does have a friend who grows asparagus but they are away for a few weeks , so we can't ask any questions .

Any one here growing Asparagus in Thailand ?

    Just spotted this

The Surface Pro 3's pen is arguably a defining feature, but you haven't had official control over it so far. As of now, though, you finally get some say over the stylus' behavior. Microsoft has posted a Surface Hub app that lets you customize both the pen's pressure sensitivity and its top button. Right now, the software isn't likely to please demanding artists and note-takers -- you don't have fine-grained sensitivity tuning, you can't launch any app you like and the side buttons are strictly off-limits. The crew in Redmond is willing to add features based on feedback, so don't be afraid to pipe up if you have dreams of launching Photoshop with a single thumb press.

  14. Ive purchased a few electronic items from Lazada , the thing I noticed with some mobile phones is that if they say '' imported '' , they may not come with a full manufactures warranty or even no warranty and some times it not very clear in the products specification , so its best to directly confirm what the warranty period is before you purchase . The other thing ive noticed is that a product may not arrive with a sales receipt , just a delivery notice , and in some cases where a product is found to be later faulty and taken to a manufactures service outlet under the warranty period , they may ask for proof of purchase ( the sales receipt ) before any under warranty repair work can be carried out . As for dispatching a product and paying for it , I would recommend if possible to go for the COD option . Communication with Lazada for me has all ways been easy and helpful . Every thing I have purchased has been genuine

  15. " .. . Hi I have been doing bank to bank TT but the fees are really high. Any ideas on ways to save money transfer fees, perhaps forex or is there any services that do this for less money than banks, and western union?

Thank you in advance.. . ."

Depends from which country that you are transfering funds from, and the may ways of doing it.
I transfer funds from my UK bank ( HSBC ) in Sterling, to my Thai bank account online, & the new rates are:-up to a maximum of 30,000 pounds per 24 hour period & the fee is 4 pounds, + you get approx 1 Baht ( = 2p approx ) extra after the money is converted to Baht for a small fee by your Thai bank.
The time from bank to bank takes around 4 hours ( but once,& only once ) it took 18 hours.

I want to transfer money from my online UK HSBC Bank account , when I try to set up the transfer and click the drop down menu asking which currency I want to transfer in ( I want Sterling Pounds ), there is no Sterling shown in the drop down menu selection , but it does show Thai Baht .

Any one know how to transfer money from a UK HSBC to my Thai bank in Sterling ?

Just gussing, but do you have a pay a bill item and will that let you send GBP to Thailand?

When first trying to send Sterling , I missed the '' GBP Equivalent '' in the drop down list , a kind TV member pointed it out to me thumbsup.gif

  17. Basically that's the amount of govt coverage for your various accounts at each bank. If you had one or several accounts at a bank in case of the bank's failure the govt would reimburse up to X-amount as shown in the time frame chart. Anything over the amount shown in the chart above would only possibly be reimbursed from the bank liquidation process. Key to point out the "at each bank" part...I don't mean "at each branch of a particular bank." So, if you had all your money with one bank, say Kasikorn Bank just for example, but had accounts at multiple Kasikorn branches, well the coverage max applies to aggregate amount of all the accounts you have at that bank's various branches.

Now this is max coverage "by bank" so it's better not to have all you money at only bank X (say Bangkok Bank just for example)... in order to have more coverage, better to have some accounts at bank Y (say Krungsri Bank just for example) also. That way you would have a total of 2 million baht in total coverage come 11 Aug 16. 1 million coverage at Bangkok Bank and 1 million coverage at Krungsri Bank.

So, let's fast forward to 11 Aug 16 when the coverage drops to 1 million baht. That 1 million baht would be the max coverage provided for the one or multiple accounts you have a bank X. Say you had multiple accounts totaling 3 million baht at that bank X like maybe a regular savings account and a couple of fixed accounts, only 1 million of that 3 million would be reimbursed by the govt...and additional reimbursement would only possibly come after the liquidation process/bank assets were sold off.

Now 1 million baht (approx 32K USD) is not much in minds of most farangs, but keep in mind when looking at the Thai population as a whole the great majority of Thais will not have 1 million baht in the bank...so 1 million coverage amount is adequate. Heck, I expect the great majority of farangs in Thailand don't have 1 million baht in Thai banks based on ThaiVisa posts.

The DPA amounts have been extended a couple times already and it wouldn't surprise me to see the amounts and dates change again, especially the 11 Aug 16 date when coverage drops to 1 million baht...my guess is that date will be pushed out again. Only time will tell.

Thanks for that easy to understand explanation thumbsup.gif

I have a friend here in Thailand who has all his money in a Thai bank and after the recent coup he was / is concerned that some how banks could become more unstable and he could some how loose all his money . Is he worrying too much ?
