  1. I lived in Thailand for few years and had moved to another country. In order to get a visa here I need a 'no criminal records' certificate from every country where I've live for more then 6 months.

I've called embassy of Thailand and they refused to help me saying "go to Thailand authority and get the certificate there".

So my question is what is common practice of getting such a certificate?

  2. Maybe CAT HiNet is great but their have limited presence in Pattaya. In my case I live in the end of Jomtien beach road while they can only provide their service no far then the police box.

So I'll try TOT SME next month. Prices are higher but I hope there is a better chance to get a better latency.

  3. Webfact, are those results with TOT? What connection do you have?

Land line provider is TOT. Internet provider is CSLoxinfo. (ADSL media provider is ADC, thats TOT I guess).

4 MB SME line. 5900 VAT incl. Best speed I ever got was Atlanta - download 3.2 MB! US average is downstream between 2 and 2.5 MB

Could you please tell an ip address you have?

I want to ping it from various locations to check is there a real difference in ping as well in speed.

  4. Depending on your ailment, the waiting period is either 30 or 120 days - see attached file

The attached file says 180 days.

This is now general across all insurance companies as many people in the past who knew of a problem simply took out insurance one day and claimed the next !

I did have an insurance before. Even a bit expensive then AXA's.

And that wasn't a next day. That was 4 month when one day after a very usual breakfast I suddently started becoming yellow.

According to my American friends's stories in the US I would be paid in my situation.

FYI – AXA health insurance is very good !

Hope they are. But not for me.

  5. I had an insurance from Thai Health then after it expired I got another one from AXA. That was an idea of an insurance broker to switch to AXA. Maybe they got better %% from them.

After 4 months I got a surgery for total cost about 200k baht.

AXA said they will not cover this because they have a waiting period of 6 months for this disease (gallbladder removal).

AFAIK in the US waiting periods are transferable when you change an insurance company.

How does it work here? I haven't been asked about previous insurance.

The insurance broker who told to switch to AXA is AA Insure Pattaya.

  6. I live in Pattaya and thinking about going to Hong Kong for shopping to buy a camcorder and a lcd monitor stand.

    1. Is there any online shops in HK where can I check prices?

    2. Any way to get a visa and a ticket w/o going to BKK?

    3. Any alternatives to HK for buying electronics?

  7. Then I got the full story!!

My old pick went to him for 350,000 from the Toyota Dealership!!! :o Toyota made 80,000 Baht.

He sold it on for..........400,000 !!!!!!! :D Dealer made 50,000 Baht.

That's more than I paid for it 2 years before !!

It looks like a trade-in doesn't work here as in other countries.

In my home country I got almost the top market price for an old car (while buying a new one).

Here a local dealer offered 400k for a 2 y.o. car that I bought for 600k (they didn't look at the car, just made calculations).

I was expected 450k at least while tent dealers prices are about 500k.

I'm not in a hurry I better try to sell it by myself.

  8. one of the dealers i know in pattaya told me cars can be bought for 100k in bkk and resold in pattaya for 200k, iit wouldnt surprise me as i went and had a look at some trade ins and they were almost double bkk prices,. .that thais work on small profits in the car trade is a myth,

Well if you are talking about 100-200k cars then everything is possible.

A car for 100k should be a 10 year old or in similar state.

I was talking about 1-2 y.o. cars with few years of original warranty.

  9. I'm going to sell my car (about 500k) and then buy another one (1000k). All cars are 1-2 y. old.

The fist one I got directly from a farang. The new one I'm going to buy from a farang also.

So I need to make some calculation.

If a farang is selling his car for 1000k how much will he loose if he sell it to a street dealer (tent)?.

  10. Thank you guys for the advices!

The biggest problem for me is the sizes of equipment (in any sport). The industry just don't produce/sell for persons with height/weight above average ( > 100kg, mine is 120 and 48 shoes size).

So I hope there in bigger shop centers will be a better selection of sizes.

Anyway I want to visit Bangkok soon.

Yesterday I just tried a wakeboard w/o boots but wearing windsurfing shoes. For me it feels like a wakeskate. So maybe I just buy a wakeboard w/o boots.

  11. In Royal Garden Plaza Pattaya there is only wakeboards but I want a wakeskate.

Also all gloves there are of small sizes (mine is XXL at least).

So I'm considering take a visit to Bangkok.

Super Sports is known to have water sport equipment.

I was not able to find their site for more info.

Hope in Central World there will be a big selection.

Any other shopping centers I should to visit?

  12. I need to buy a special LCD monitor mount arm.

    Like this one: ha-100-1.jpg

This one is produced by a Taiwanese firm and aviable in US for about $500.

I'm afraid to order anything on the Internet because I think Thai customs make the prices doubled.

So i think I have to first to look for it here.

It should be available in shops dedicated for dentists stuff. I have seen many dentists rooms with such a thing.

Any ideas where to get a thing like this in LOS?

  13. We a farang family. No one work here. Our son is going to a international school (regents).

They told they can give us papers to get a visa for us because our son is defendant of us.

But for some reason this will work only for one of us.

In http://www.lawyer.th.com/National_Police_O...er_Oct_2006.pdf I cannot see anything related to the number of parents.

So I assume that we both can get the O visa?

Had anyone have a _real_ personal experience on getting such kind of visa?

  14. Anybody knows a good place to do that in Pattaya?
What about DIY - that would be alot cheaper and you can do it in the comfort of your own place... Anyone have recommendations on how to do that ?

And there are few more replies before this which have raised valid points. First of all for hucus, look for Rasayana retreat, in pattaya. They have a big center in Bangkok and recently opened a branch in Pattaya.

So I have been there today. Even before I read your reply.

I lost about 2-3 kilos and that all.

The place doesn't looks like it has something to do with medicine.

Just like a regular thai massage shop. The only difference that this one is little bit overprices - 2.5k for 40 min of taking crap is too much I think.

I don't think their equipment is too expencive. It looked like it was made at same factory which make tuk-tuks.

  15. I'm considering moving to Phuket from Pattaya.

Found a site where I see the prices in Phuket are about 20-30% cheaper then in Pattaya.

    http://www.houseinphuket.com/houses/LTR/a0161/

What I'm looking for is a new house in a secured gated village. Here in Pattaya I can get this for 40-55k a months in East Pattaya.

Phuket seems to be a bit cheaper. Is that true?

A neighbour who also considering to Phuket told me that there everything is more expesive then here. But his sources are limited as he don't use Internet and has language problems.

  16. We (farang couple) pay our live-in nanny/maid 9k a month. Actually we plan to pay 9k per month as the maid is working for us for about tree weeks.

Befour that she was employed by our neighbours for 6k.

She primary takes care of our 7 months old daughter. Also she do cleaning job in the morning.

Our other neighbours have a maid for 12k per month. She live-in and takes cares of two kids (1 & 7 y.o.).

After few months of work she went for holiday and come back with her 4y.o. daughter. She hid her for few days in her room untill the neighbours discovered the girl by an accident! So now she is a live-in with her daugher.

The neighbours are also a farang couple.

They ordered the maid from Bangkok maid agency as an English speaking. But it turned out that her English is very limited to few basic words. Anyway the neighbours themself are far from fluent English speakers.

We tried to find an English speaking maid but didn't know where to get one so accepted the current one.

Actually it turned out that 5-10 English words she know is more then enough to give her simple commands.

We also have next-door farang-Thai neighbours who can help us in translation in a hard case. However its rarely needed.

Actually Thai language is not that hard to learn. In few days I learnt it enough for very basic conversation.

  17. My TOT is afraid of sun light.

When there is sun it will not work from 10am till 17pm. No phone and no ADSL.

For the last few days as the wheather is not that hot it works just fine.

The whole village experiencing this for 6 months at least.

  18. I'm considering a Hutch cmda2000 "broadband" modem.

Have anybody any experience with it in East Pattaya?

A lady in their shop told me that there is no signal in East Pattaya (soi Siam CC).

That sounds strange to me. If they selling Hutch phones in the city there should be good signal around the city.

I think you should listen to the sales lady. Hutch is only a slight bit better than GPRS at best. Their coverage is very limited and not available at all most places. Maybe in a year or two it will be better. Get a decent class 10 cellphone and connect your computer with a cable or Bluetooth to GPRS. I think you will be disappointed with either system. You can check your email and do a bit of surfing but it WILL be slow.

I bought Hutch for a friend of mine who live in Jomtien (he don't have a Thai driver licence to buy on his name).

It works exactly the same in Jomtien and 10km from Sukhomvit to the East. So the lady was wrong.

A bit better for websurfing then GPRS and much better for SSH (a it have better ping 300-400 and no packet loss).

  19. I live on the same road about the same distance (SP Village 3).

Here is only TOT aviable. It doesn't work regualry when weather is hot. Usually from 10AM till 17PM. A neighbour said a connection box is overheating.

Today I got a Hutch card.

Signal level is 5 out of 6 bars.

Interesting thing is that a sales lady said me that there will no signal at all my area.

Finally it turned out that she don't know where soi Siam Country Club is. I guess she now knew Thai name of the road.

    So Hutch is working here.

However don't expect too much from it - it feels like it a little bit better then a dial-up modem.

    But better then GPRS.

Speedtest shows 100kbits. Packet loss right now is 10%. At 7PM there was no packet loss.

P.S. My TOT is fine at evenings. So if we can get a wi-fi link between us then we can swap Internet depending of time of the day :-)

  20. How does it all work here?

For example if I buy a car and then sell it through a dealer. How much the dealer is getting his %%?

Or how to buy a car directly from owner? I'm not asking about technical inspection or so - just legal matters.

I'm planning to buy a used 1-3 y.o. car and then sell it after a year.

Tried to view some cars at street dealers (Pattaya) - all the cars were in bad condition. A 2 year old Honda City looked like its 15 y.o.
