I strongly believe that English-speaking accounting firms are behind this stupid move(new tax things targeting foreigners) In order to capitalize the anxiety among the 1st world expats. After my out-of-curiosity queries sent to 2-3 of such establishments, they were very keen to tell me that they can arrange advisory meeting for THB5000-17000/hour. Even when tax department cannot collect any money from those whose income is already taxed elsewhere, these firms can still at least make a good amount of money by making up a useless self-interested meeting with the worrying aliens in the name of Expert Advice. It might be just one-off occasion per individual. Earlier in the 21st century, Thai govt. started to allow foreigners to buy some of their over-produced condominiums. Due to the pressure from the housing developers(that were suffering the aftermath of late 1990s Asian Currency Crisis). To me, the same thing is happening again in the different field. What other people think about?

Normally thinking, that is the logical conclusion. Unless tax department of Thailand willfully ignores the legal limit(tax agreement). That is why this issue is causing this much confusion and uneasy feeling among ordinary expats in Thailand. Even though the biggest impacted is the rather easy-to-see big fish. Not the small fish hard to find.

Those commercial entities/billionaires already making a huge amount of profit (openly dodging tax payment) will be the primary targets. Otherwise, they just end up as wasting huge amount of time and labor by the end of any tax years. What is the point of chasing around not-so-affluent foreigners for little or no gain.

A massive stimulation in their local economys. ---------------------------- Do you really believe the money from the 'new tax' will be spent for the welfare of the poor in Thailand? Too naive to believe that innocently. Nothing more than another scheme to enrich the already superrich 0.1% of the ruling class. If I am here long enough, can see it naturally.

The biggest impacted will be global corporation including Thailand's(dodging tax payment skillfully using tax heaven and other legal loopholes). Earlier this year(in Feb when this was first addressed in public), I saw the article that says this proposed change will be strongly challenged by the wealthy Thais and big companies.

Yesterday, I got a email from the accounting firm I contacted several days ago(out of curiosity). They sent me the link of the original BKK Post article of this same issue. And that sender(tax specialist) also stressed that the article is purely tax chief's private speech. Not a official statement by the tax department of Thailand.

I am quite sure they certainly have no such resources or manpower to do that. Unless they can fetch and torture every single innocent alien here brutally. "Tell us all about your income outside our kingdom. Or your pain persists even longer..." Land of the smile will rapidly turn into the state of another North Korea with the tropical climate. Certainly bad for this country's reputation as the major tourist destination.

..expand the tax base by requiring platforms with an income of 1 billion baht or more to report their sources of income. ------------------------------ It means he is not interested in anyone's foreign income less than 1B THB/year. Seemingly targeting mega corporation/super-super rich individuals. What make you guys worry so much? Any of the readers/posters here earns that much money each year I certainly don't LOL. This stupid article is another form of Click Bait; trying to draw readers' attention with the scary headline. Nothing more than that.

positioning themselves strategically along bustling tourist hotspots. Looks like the best line in this article. And it shows they are well-organized by those behind the scene. In some countries(might include Thailand), there are underground shops that rent out baby for the female beggars. So they can earn more by buying sympathy from the passers-by.

I have seen exactly the same scene in Thai-Burmese border(Tachilek) nearly 2 decades ago. Dirty little hill tribe boy in worn clothing begged money to the westerners passing by on the border bridge. When one old man gave some, he was then surrounded by 10-20 of such. And he looked like panicked. So I refused to give money when another similar one asked for a change. Even though I often give 10 B to the beggar sitting roadside elsewhere.

What a deceptive title. I thought CBD stands for Central Business District LOL. Hardly imagined it is something about cannabis. -
